This week, Mr Allen’s assemblies focussed on the 4 saints that our houses are named after. St Angela, St Adele, St Cecilia and St Frances have much to teach us about ourselves and we are reminded that in all parts of our lives, we should try to be more like the Saints. Congratulations to Ms Scheepers and Mrs Hinch. Thank you to everyone who took part. The students were queueing the whole way across the playground to purchase a doughnut. The doughnuts went down a treat and we were able to raise £170. 3
Wear it Pink week began on Monday 14th October I had responded to an advert that Beautiful Events when we sold a number of different fancy dress items Bexley had put out offering a free decoration service including bunny ears, Minnie mouse ears, tiaras, fairy to anyone holding an event for Breast Cancer. On wings, cat ears, flower headbands, unicorn Wednesday 16th October, the day before our Wear headbands, cowboy hats and more. Ria came at 7am on the day of the On Tuesday 15th October, we sold the Breast event and set up their beautiful pink rose flower wall Cancer Now Merchandise where the students could and provided signs with our school logo and also a buy the wristbands, pens, and badges. Over the separate stand. For beautiful events Bexley to be able summer, I had handmade hundreds of bows and to turn up last minute for us and provide these ribbons and customised them with crystals these amazing decorations was just amazing. Our students were on sale at 50p and £1. (and staff!) loved having their photograph taken in front of the wall especially as they were all dressed in We continued to sell any merchandise and remaining their pink outfits for the day. Having the flower wall fancy dress items throughout the lunchtimes on made such a difference to the day and it is something Wednesday. that we have never had in the 6 years I have been running Breast Cancer Now fundraising events. On behalf of the students and staff at St Catherine’s Catholic School, I want to thank Ria and her team at Beautiful Events Bexley for their kindness, professionalism and dedication in helping our school community on a day that is so very important in our school calendar. Thank you for making our Wear it Pink 2019 so very special. 5
On Thursday 17th October, Wear it Pink day had finally arrived! I began the day by photographing some students with our flower wall. I then sent round a logo quiz for students and staff to complete during form time. I had recoloured 9 famous logos pink and the first set of correct answers would receive a whole box of Tunnock’s caramel wafers. Mr Considine and his form 11Fr2 were quick off the mark and won the caramel wafers but thank you to everyone who participated. During Lesson 1, I drew the staff raffle and I had 27 prizes to giveaway which included Starbucks gift sets, a Vidal Sassoon voucher, a Tanyard Lane meal voucher, an Oliver Bonas £20 gift card and a night at the Holiday Inn to highlight a few. Thank you to all the members of staff who bought raffle tick- ets and I hope you enjoy your prizes. At break time, I turned on the girl power playlist, lit up the stage with disco lights and began applying glitter make up to as many students as I physically could in that time. As the glitter make up was so popular at break time I continued to offer this during the three lunchtimes and the students were looking more and more pink and sparkly as the day went on. After all the lunches had finished and we had sold as many raffle tickets as we could, I drafted in the help of Mrs Hinch and Mr Childs to help draw the student raffle. Due to the generosity of so many companies that had helped us out with raffle donations this year, we were able to give out 53 prizes to the students. Wear it Pink 2019 has been a roaring success and even though so much work, planning and preparation goes into the event, I enjoy it so much. We have currently raised £2377 which brings our total figure up to £18,442. I love hearing about our students and staff members’ connections with breast cancer and why they want to support our fundraising, I especially enjoy interacting with our Year 7 students as this is their first Wear it Pink at St Catherine’s and they are always so enthusiastic about getting involved and looking at all the items for sale. Each year, I am so proud of what we achieve during our pink week and even during this time I am constantly thinking what else can I do? I am hoping to squeeze in another two raffles before Christmas as we had so many prizes donated including a lot of books from some publishing companies that it made sense to do some more fundraising throughout November and towards the end of December. On Thursday 31st October, 75 Year 10 students visited the London Museum of London Docklands. During this fascinating history trip, we have all gained a lot of knowledge about Jack the Ripper, Whitechapel and London Docklands. During one of the workshop sessions we were allowed to look at and hold objects and replicas from the 19th Century. Another session included visiting the three floors of the museum where there were various exhibitions and interactive displays to which we had a booklet to fill in answers to various questions about the exhibits. We also had a drama/Q&A session with a character acting as a police officer from the time who explained to us the struggle of trying to catch Jack the Ripper as well as details about the patterns of the murders which were both interesting and surprising. We truly recommend going to visit the London Museum of London if you are looking to study History at GCSE. We have learned a lot and had an amazing time. HANNAH 10CE2 & ITOHAN 10CE2 9

MEDICATION Please ensure that any medication your daughter needs to bring to school is labelled with their name and form, includes instructions on how and when it is to be taken and is in date. All medication must be handed in to the school office. Students may go to the school office when they need to take their medication. This applies to all medication including over the counter medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. AEROSOLS, SPRAYS AND KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE At the beginning of the new school year it is important to be reminded about some of our rules which are designed to keep all of the students safe and well in school. We ask that students do not bring any aerosols, other types of spray or perfumes into school. This is clearly stated in out planner and is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students. The spraying of these items can lead to asthma attacks for students in school and therefore poses a serious risk to their safety and wellbeing. Students can bring a roll on deodorant to school to use after their PE lessons should they wish but aerosol sprays, other types of spray and perfumes should not be brought to school and therefore not used anywhere on the school site. The support of all parents/carers and students with regard to this matter is very much appreciated. MRS HAYES 14
