Scarborough UTC News Flash Friday 12th February 2021 INTRODUCTION Dear Parent/Carer We have made it through to half term and the first major milestone of this lockdown. Remote learning has been the order of the day and we are really pleased that students have been engaging well with this new normal, approaching their learning with good, positive attitudes and making steady progress. We have conducted a student survey on their views of remote learning thus far and the responses have been in the main very positive. What is clear about remote learning, from feedback received from students, parents and staff is that learning remotely through a screen is very demanding for many reasons. I hope that you are all able to take a break from screens and get some rest and fresh air this half term. We look forward to greater clarity about the way forward from here when the government set out their road map from the 22nd February. Our vision of, Technical Excellence, Employable Graduates is at the heart of everything we do. In our view, the ultimate measure of our success in developing young people with high levels of technical competency and employability skills is the destinations our students go onto. Over the last three years we have had fantastic destinations with many going onto university to study STEM subjects and other degrees, and others going straight into roles with major companies both local and national to take degree apprenticeships and other apprenticeships. We are therefore particular proud of the latest national publication by Baker Dearing Trust which features two of our alumni students, Hana and Nathan. I have included the link here for your information: https://www.utcolleges.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/BD-destinations_FINAL.pdf Have a good half term break. Thank you for your support. Mr Kilgour Principal T&L@SUTC Firstly, a well done to all teachers and students at Scarborough University Technical College with respect to their efforts with remote teaching and learning this half term. The commitment to ensuring that the National lockdown has minimal effect on progress and outcomes has been admirable.
There have been some exciting developments this week within the Career Development Programme with a new batch of Y12 students being interviewed by GCHQ for placements to receive mentoring, technical support and work experience with this prestigious organisation. In addition, as a part of the programme, one of our Y13 students has been virtually mentored over the past few weeks by a graduate nuclear engineer. Calista Allen received direct advice and support with respect to a successful Royal Navy Accelerated Apprenticeship interview. Calista said: "I really appreciated working with ……….. to receive invaluable interview skills and advice. Their expertise helped accelerate my application and led to a successful interview experience." Well done and congratulations to Calista! Her story is testament to the success that can be gained through working with employers and mentors as a part of the sixth form experience at Scarborough UTC. TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE News from Systems Control. Pre-assessment tasks have been the main theme of our student learning this week. Our year 12 & 13 Electrical pathway students have completed the first part of showing their understanding of Kirchhoff’s current laws. The maths and application of Electrical principles can be demanding, but not if you approach it in a methodical, logical way. I’m looking forward to seeing this week’s progress, ahead of moving to another step up with a dual voltage circuit. All our GCSE systems and control students have been completing 4 short pre-assessment tasks and a Google Forms quiz about Open and Closed Loop systems. This was part of the live learning and follow up to refresh student recognition of a wide variety of input and output devices. Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement helping your child to take part in live lessons, and to join in. The best thing for me, as we reach this half term break, has been how many more of our students are getting used to using “Meet” to ask for further explanation, asking questions and using the chat feature well – it tells me that although not physically in the electronic workshop, the students are in the learning zone, and feel safe and encouraged to do so. Have a great weekend! ENGLISH LITERATURE Well what a wonderful 5 months it has been here at the SUTC for our new Y10 students! From such a diverse range of backgrounds, we really have bonded and subsequently relished every piece of our curriculum so far.
This week, we revisited all we had achieved and the students astounded me with how easily they recalled knowledge from as far back as September! It was joyous to revisit their learning journey so we thought we should share it with you too. Your child has studied: 4 poems: Living Space by Imtiaz Dharker which celebrates the community spirit of the people living in Dharavi. London by William Blake which graphically communicates the devastating effects of poverty on the people in the 18th Century. To Autumn by John Keats, admiring the unappreciated season of autumn and ponders the passing of time. Ozymandias by Percy Shelley, telling us a story of the ancient statue of Ramesses II and exploring the power of nature and time. • 1 novella: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens • A range of fictional extracts and non-fiction articles • Studied high-level documentaries including the series: The Romantics by legendary literary scholar Peter Ackroyd. Through these texts we have explored ideas of poverty, economics and politics through the ages, Christian Bible stories such as Adam and Eve, the power struggle between humanity, nature and time, the French and American Revolutions, the Great Chain of Being, Industrial Revolution and its impact on society then and now. The list is endless... Your children have studied these with enthusiasm, rigour and real passion- often offering original and perceptive interpretations and ideas. What astounded all of us the other day was that despite it being English literature we study; we have managed to travel the world and time travel without moving from our seats! Where have we been? We have travelled to: Mumbai, India-present day Australia Italy in the 1800's Pakistan Glasgow France in the 1700's America in the 1700's London in the 1700's and 1800's Manchester in the 1800's Even...Ancient Egypt!
We have had virtual tours of the British Museum in London looking particularly at the famous bust of Ramesses II. We have watched the live performance of A Christmas Carol by the Old Vic Theatre. We have explored Charles Dickens' actual home with the Charles Dickens society and even got a shout out from the actor Dominic Gerrard after watching his one-off performance of A Christmas Carol! I am sure you will agree that it has been an astounding bout of learning and the students cannot wait to study more texts and travel through time and space! With the help of your children, we have truly discovered that English Literature is a subject that is at the centre of everything and therefore we now have the strapline: "English at the heart of everything" because it really is. On behalf of the English team, we would like to thank you for supporting us and your children through a difficult, unprecedented time but one that has remained fruitful and enriching- we look forward to even more after a well-earned rest for your children. A huge thank you to you all, The English Team Miss Atkinson and Miss Bailey ASSESSMENT AND CURRICULUM Pastoral and Attainment Week commencing 22nd February is Week A Well done postcards have been posted to students, identifying hard work, consistent positive engagement and Professional Value points. Teaching staff will continue to post live lesson updates via google classroom to inform when the live lessons will take place to ensure each student has the correct information for each subject. Students can only access the lessons using their Scarborough UTC email account. The google class code for class membership only and this should not be shared. Security, conduct and privacy settings are vital to safeguard the integrity of on-line activities and live lessons. This notification is only designed to allow you to identify issues at home. Registers are completed at the end of lessons so if there is a technical issue getting onto the class and
attendance is late this can be managed. If you receive a message it is a reminder that there may be an issue, we can then aim to support and help. Any further concerns please contact enquiries@scarboroughutc.co.uk and Mrs Ellis for Pastoral concerns in KS4. Students attending college for interventions have been issued with COVID 19 testing consent forms, these should be brought on the day of attendance to ensure guidance is followed. Curriculum and Assessment Y11 and 13 Reminder Thank you for the positive feedback from parents and students in relation to remote learning provision. Current student attainment data which was completed in December 2020 is on the MCAS parent portal. W/C 1st February- Y11 and 13 assessment and moderation cycle starts. Students must continue to complete the remote work that is set to their best and respond to feedback. All work is checked for plagiarism. 11/03/2021- Progress Evening for Year 11 and 13. (Currently scheduled as phone calls) W/C 22nd March – Y11 and 12 Full Reports W/C 1st March – Y10 and 12 assessment and moderation cycle starts. 06/05/2021- Y10 and 12 Full Reports A timetable reminder for live lessons. Students will continue to follow their usual timetable, some of the lesson are live, some are recorded and in some, work is set with a deadline. To use the time table schedule issued to identify live lessons: Attendance at live lessons is marked by the teacher and attendance information feeds into messaging and notifications. We understand that in some circumstances you may receive a message and that there are several reasons for this. If there are issues, students can email their teacher via google classroom. For Example:” I am going to be late on class today due to technical issues”.
The messaging service only picks up N for a recorded non- attendance in a live lesson where the teacher has completed the register. If a live lesson is added or changed the system identifies this. This attendance monitoring is in place to identify session attendance, identify potential support and does not affect overall attendance.
