CONDELL PARK HIGH SCHOOL Third Avenue, Condell Park 2200 Preparing Our Students For The Future Term 4: 2017 Merry Christmas! Principal’s Message Finally, our last newsletter for 2018. This has been a year full of celebrations, successes and outstanding achievements. I’d like to start by thanking all our staff at CPHS for the wonderful job they do with our students. Their passion, commitment and personal attention to every student is what makes CPHS such a unique school. Thank you to you, our parents and caregivers for entrusting us with your children. Thank you also for your support this year. We value our partnership and appreciate the relationships that we have built with the hard work of our Community Liaison Officers who aim to establish that home/school congruence that exists between us. This year, the Education Minister, Dr Rob Stokes, visited our school and spent time with our Year 11 school leaders and sat in on a Year 12 Business Studies class to launch the new Life Ready program this year. Our school featured on the seven o’clock news. Our Autism Unit celebrated Excellence In Education by receiving the Secretary’s award for “Talk Time”. This was televised on the ABC 7.30 Report. Two of our staff, Ms White and Mrs Balamoan, received an award for excellence in public education (picture below). Some of the academic highlights of the year are our NAPLAN data. Once again this year we achieved exceptional results in all areas of this national testing. We achieved average scaled growth higher than similar school groups in Writing. Our Numeracy results were also very pleasing with both boys and girls achieving greater thank or equal to expected growth. In 2017, 97 students achieved a Higher School Certificate. Our HSC results in 2017 were outstanding with English, Mathematics, Science, Language and Creative Arts showing above scaled growth when compared to similar school groups and even the state. Congratulations to our students and to our staff for an amazing achievement. We are eagerly awaiting this year’s HSC results. We were excited this year to officially open our new Community Hub. This building has been used by our Year 12 students where this future focused learning space provides them with opportunities for group work, private study as well as providing them with the latest ICT to further enhance their skills in this area. Our parent groups use this venue also in P&C meetings and in the training and learning sessions that we run for them. In 2019, Term 2, we hope to launch our new Tiered Learning Space which is currently being built, costing over 2.2 million dollars. This latest state of the art building will provide a venue for our Creative Arts, Drama and Music students to thrive. It also acts as a lecture theatre, allowing year groups to meet with the latest access to ICT. I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that Mrs Mozayani has given to CPHS for the last 14 years. She is leaving us to take up a position much closer to home at Picton High School. Thank you very much for everything that you have done to support every student in our school. On behalf of the CPHS community I wish you well in your teaching career in our public system. During this year, we have continued to celebrate student achievements and have showcased this in our newsletters. Our Tell Them From Me surveys have provided feedback to us that our staff, students and community are pleased with our successes, processes and future directions. I aim to continue to lead CPHS into the future and strive to ensure that every student is known, cared for and supported in every way possible. Our staff are highly experienced and passionate in their role as we continue to serve our community. Thank you once again for your trust and loyalty. Congratulations to our students on your successes and achievements. On behalf of the staff at CPHS, I would like to wish our Christian community a Merry Christmas and to all of you a wonderful and safe holiday. Looking forward to working with you in 2019. SC Mobayed
From the November 26 to 28, Week 7, students of CPHS opened the hall doors to the school and nearby primary schools for the long-awaited STEM Fair. The STEM Fair is an annual showcase of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and CPHS opens their fair up to all subjects. The international theme for 2018 was ‘Game Changers, Change Makers’. Students from every faculty organised unique displays, each showcasing something or someone who has made positive changes. All presentations were amazing but here are the five displays that I enjoyed the most: Wheel-of-Fortune (ENGLISH): Students were able to participate in the much loved game show in an attempt to solve word puzzles regarding game changes. Build-a-bot (HSIE): Using recycled materials, visitors were invited to design and make their very own futuristic robot. Amusement Park Physics (SCIENCE): Presented through ingenious materials, this station explains the science and physics behind rollercoasters and amusement park rides of a similar kind. EscaPE Room (PD/H/PE): This challenge invites teams of four or more to attempt to escape a room using your knowledge of Physical Education. Water System (SUPPORT UNIT): The effort put in for this showcase was evident through the posters that explained the water system and a model that demonstrated a self-watering plant. The hall, with all its neat decorations, radiated a calm yet excited and energetic energy which was noticeable. Each showcase was colourfully decorated with suitable posters and information sheets designed by the students. Before leaving the hall, visitors were given a slip of paper on which they wrote the name of their favourite stand. The exhibition with the most votes will win a prize. By Jacquelyn Wilson
Achievements for 2018 Congratulations to all of our students who have excelled in their academic and sporting achievements this year. I would like to pay particular attention to our out-going school captains for 2018, P’Lan Aung and Walid Kurdi. They have represented our school demonstrating our school values of respect, equity, safety and positivity. We are very proud of them and their achievements and wish them every success in their future endeavours. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our universities with whom we have very strong links. Western Sydney University provided our students with individualised career guidance, study skills and essay writing workshops just to name a few. Through its Outreach program, Sydney University provided our students with on-campus visits, tutors for digital media and Spectacular Science. We have just finished our STEM Fair, based on the theme of Game Changers and Change Makers in which all years participated in cross curriculum inquiry based learning projects. NAPLAN results continue to inform our teaching and learning programs and classroom practice. Teachers continue to use this data to identify skills for improvement. For the past six years, the school was deemed as Excelling in average value added growth in combined reading and numeracy skills scores in relation to Similar School Groups and State value added growth. As this goes to print, we are looking forward to the HSC results and hearing about university enrolments. Future directions Most importantly, we want to increase our communication with you. Our senior Community Liaison Officer, Mrs Antoinette Balamoan is always excited when new parents attend our P&C meetings and workshops. Our parent community is very valuable to us and this year, in response to our parents’ requests, we ran a tour of the school on the day of our Many Cultures One Voice assembly. Parent feedback was very positive and informative and in response, we are running more workshops. We will be holding seminars on how to help you prepare your children for their assessment tasks, exams, and NAPLAN at the first few meetings in 2019. We will also run more school tours for our parents and celebrate Harmony Day on 21 March 2019. Looking forward to seeing you at these events. Wishing you all a very safe and happy holiday, Ms Victoria Nielsen Deputy Principal Term Four 2018 / Term 1 2019 Wednesday 19 December Last Day Term 4 Wednesday 30 January Term 1 Commences for Year 7, 11 & 12 Thursday 31 January Term 1 Commences for Year 8, 9 & 10
Although the school year is wrapping up for the majority of our students, the adventure has just begun for the students of Year 7, 2019. On Tuesday 04/12 over 130 Year 6 students and their parents visited Condell Park High School for their Orientation day. They were treated to some amazing musical performances from students in Year 7-11, and listened to some great advice from Mr Harding, Ms Watts and Ms Kokolas. While students completed a school tour with their Peer Support leaders, parents were invited to an incredible morning tea put on by the Year 10 and 11 Hospitality students with the assisstance of Ms Eissa, Ms Brackley. I look forward to the next 6 years of adventures with these students, and cannot wait for the new school year to begin. Mrs Luke Yr 7 2019 Year Adviser Year 10 and 11 Food Technology and Hospitality students prepared, cooked and served a food buffet for 200 people. Year 7 students for 2019 visited our school, preparing for their 1st year in high school. Parents were welcomed to Condell Park High with a morning tea buffet of freshly prepared sandwiches, pastries, meatballs, salad sticks, muffins and a fresh fruit platter. We received raving reviews from parents for our professional and delicious food served. Well done to our future chefs! Ms Eisa
Condell Park High School’s Yr 7/8 boys futsal team travelled to Fairfield High School to participate in the Bankstown Zone futsal gala day. The first game began poorly, with the opposition scoring an early goal to take the lead. The boys demonstrated a large amount of resilience and positivity to earn a come from behind win. The remaining group games saw Condell Park go from strength to strength, to finish top of their group. We advanced to the knockout rounds and were able to breeze past our opponent to earn a place in the Grand Final against Moorebank High School. The final game of the day mirrored the first game of the day, with Condell Park conceding early, with a powerful goal from the kick off. We were able to rally and get back into the game before winning by a comfortable margin. Congratulations, to the whole team who were able to demonstrate their immense talent to go through the competition as undefeated Champions. In terms 2, 3 and 4 this year. A group of year 8 students took up the opportunity to participate in the Youth Frontiers mentoring program. The students learnt about minority groups that were less fortunate than themselves. As a culmination of the program the students held a fund raising activity where they sold ice blocks. The students raised $265 for Vision Australian. Pictured are the students receiving their graduation certificate.
In September, three Year 10 students participated in the SunSafe Student Ambassador Program. The aim of the program was to train a small number of students in the importance of sun safety and how to deliver an effective presentation. Using the skills they learnt, Peter Malaitai and Sajad Alsafi created and delivered a sun safety presentation to Year 7 in Term 4. The main message of the presentation was to protect your skin when outside by wearing a hat, sun- glasses, SPF 50 sunscreen, protective clothing and seeking shade when possible. Students were also encouraged to regularly check their skin for irregular moles and seek medical advice if they’re worried, because Melanoma is the most common cancer for Australians aged 15-39 years. Hi everyone! We have some great news from the HSIE faculty. Ms Ali and Mrs Hakim will be running History Heads on Tuesday assembly. Every week, there will be some clues provided about a famous person, event or place in History. Guesses will be drawn from the box at the following week’s assembly. Winners will receive fantastic prizes so we hope all the school gets involved!
