C H I M E S — JULY 2021 Westminster Presbyterian Church http://www.wpclynchburg.org (434) 847-6655 e-mail: wpclynchburg@gmail.com Pastor: The Rev. Kristie M. Miles—pastorkristiemiles@gmail.com Director of Music/Organist: Robert W. Blevins When I was in school, I had a quotation by Dorothy Parker above my desk: “I hate writing. I love having written.” Boy, I can relate to that. I love fiddling with words and ideas, building linguistic monuments. But often when I am writing it feels like a birthing process, and in those moments, I agonize. It can be hard, laborious work. No matter how many times I’ve typed words onto a page before, each work’s birth is unique. There is anxiety embedded in the process, especially in the writing of spiritual / religious material. I fret: Am I being faithful to what God would have me say? Will the congregation clearly hear the message? Throughout the process, I call out to God – praying to and for the Holy Spir- it – for inspiration and guidance. Of course, sometimes this human vessel (Pastor Kristie) is better at channeling God’s Word than at other times. When I prepare to preach, I have a number of goals in mind. One of my preaching mentors described the purpose of preaching by using a phrase first coined by Finley Peter Dunne and later refined by Lucille Clifton: to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable." While I much prefer applying the first part of that aphorism, I know that preaching must function to remove our blinders and prompt our correction. I also want to Inspire you; Teach you something you didn’t already know (about Scripture, God, about yourself, or our world); Challenge you to grow and live into your faith in new ways; Engage you in on-going dialogue and in the movement of the Holy Spirit; Entertain you – okay, so this isn’t the most theologically sound reason for preaching, but let’s be honest: if church is boring, dry, and humorless, it’s harder to get excited about what Life in Christ can be; Help you see the Relevance of Scripture to your daily life; Help you make Sense of and Discover Meaning in your life. It should also be said that EVERY time I preach, my primary audience is myself. I am so grateful for the opportunity to preach every week because that means that my own knowledge and faith is challenged, stretched, and bolstered. If you are interested in helping me become a better preacher, one way to do that is to tell me how you may have been comforted, afflicted, challenged, inspired, engaged, seen the Continue to next page
relevance of Scripture to your life, what you have learned, or discovered new meaning in your life. Be specific. I look forward to continuing the dialogue with you! May we each be blessed by the illumi- nation of the Holy Spirit and may that blessing be known in the concrete ways we show God’s love in this church community. Amen! Also know that in these situations I don’t care what time of day or night it is – I want to be available to you in the critical moments of your life. Restrictions from the Covid-19 pandemic have finally been eased in the church. We can sit anywhere in the sanctuary now, stand to sing from the Hymnal, and praise the Lord for our many blessings. However, some restrictions still remain. If you have not been vaccinated, the Session asks that you please con- tinue to wear a mask while indoors. For all who have been vac- cinated, please continue to use safe contact precautions. We were grateful for technology and the ability to dedicate time to God in prayer at home via the Internet. But when you actually come back into the building, you realize how much you’ve missed the space for worship and fellowship in person! Worship services will continue to be recorded and posted on YouTube. Come to Summer Sunday School! Pastor Kr istie will be leading discussions on Christianity & the Environment each Sunday through the summer. 2021 SIGN UP SHEET FOR WESTMINSTER NOTECARDS FELLOWSHIP COFFEE $1.00 for 10 cards and 10 envelopes TIME that feature the church drawing by Roger Elliott. My dear Westminster friends, Due to health issues, it is with a very heavy heart that I must resign as secretary of Westminster Presbyter- ian Church. My last day of work was June 30, 2021. This was not an easy decision to make, it took a lot of prayerful consideration. I was recruited to this posi- tion several times by God’s calling, but now my service is over and it is time to REALLY retire. I would like to thank the members of Westminster for everything you have done to make my life so won- derful these past few years. I love this job. Wilbur and I will still remain active in our beloved congrega- tion. Thank you again for all of your love and support. Peace be with you, Nancy Duncan Sunday, August 22, at 4:00 p.m. The world is opening up, and so is Westminster! Our first post-pandemic concert has been scheduled. We will host, under the banner of the Taylor recital series and in association with a grant provided by the Lynchburg community trust, a concert of chamber music for strings and piano. This concert had been scheduled for the summer of 2020, but the pan- demic had other plans for us. Now it will finally happen. Those who remember the chamber music concert that was underwritten in memory of Carita Sydnor three years ago will know a little of what to expect. Some of the same mu- sicians who played in that concert will be returning for this one. While their program has not been set in stone, one of the musicians with whom I have been in contact has suggest- ed to me that they might like to play Robert Schumann’s celebrated piano quintet in E- flat. If in fact this work is programmed, those who do not attend the concert will have missed a lifetime opportunity to have heard this towering masterpiece in our city, and in our own church! As always, I extend my thanks to the children of James and Eleanor Taylor for making the highest quality of music available to Westminster and the Lynchburg community. Bob Blevins, Organist
Key Board Re-organized Thanks to Pastor Kristie for re-organizing the key board. All keys are clearly labeled. None of the obsolete keys from the Education Building were destroyed or discarded; those keys are on a large keyring now. PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S CIRCLE The Annual Ladies’ Summer Gathering held on June 14, 2021, at the home of Cary Roberts was a huge suc- cess. Nineteen ladies attended. I believe this was the largest gathering in quite awhile, especially coming out of the Covid restrictions, everyone had a great Aiden Thulin and Rachel Harris time of fun, food, and fellowship.
