SPRING 2021 COURSE CATALOG FEBRUARY 9 - APRIL 1 Registration begins January 6 cityofrockhill.com/lifelonglearning 803-329-5527
Welcome Y ears ago the people of Rock Hill found themselves at a crossroads. The textile industry, the bedrock of our community’s economy, was rapidly eroding. At that time the leaders of our community began hosting community planning sessions to hear from the people of Rock Hill and determine the necessary steps to create and sustain the essential lifeblood for each and every successful City – community engagement and a sense of purpose. Some thirty-five (35) years later we are thriving because of our community engagement and our unified belief that our community, with deliberate and intentional thought and action, can become a Rock Hill For All. Our success requires a multi-pronged effort intent on empowering all of our people and informing them of the opportunities we have in this Good Town. Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill is an effort to continue our years- long tradition of engaging the people of Rock Hill in a manner that encourages community involvement, allows interpersonal relationships to thrive and continues to move Rock Hill forward. Our efforts in recent memory have been around a downtown revitalization strategy – one that the engaged residents built to determine the future of Knowledge Park. We are developing a knowledge economy – a multi-faceted district that will propel our community into a modern, progressive economy based on information. Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill is a vital part of this future. You will see this as not just a program, but an exciting new opportunity for those in our community fifty (50) years of age and older and, to our knowledge, the only such effort hosted and supported by a City government in the country. It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill, another opportunity provided by this significant All American City and all the rights, privileges and benefits pertaining thereto. Welcome, John P. Gettys, Jr. Mayor Rock Hill, SC

Course Descriptions - TUESDAY COURSES - TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD / GO SET A WATCHMAN Joanne Gaskins TUESDAYS, 9 AM, February 9 - March 16 (Virtual via Zoom) Many of us grew up in the Jim Crow South, and some in a lazy, small town like Maycomb where everybody knows everybody. For those who didn’t, perhaps this journey back through time will help you understand your southern friends more clearly. In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a beloved American classic, we see life in the South through the eyes of Scout Finch, who is six years old. Twenty years later she returns to Maycomb and, as an adult, is shocked at the changes in attitudes, especially about race, in her hometown. Or has the town really changed at all? Come and walk down memory lane as we examine these two novels where most of us will see ourselves at different stages of our lives. WRITING YOUR LIFE STORY, ONE PIECE AT A TIME Linda Fox TUESDAYS, 1 PM, February 9 - March 2 (Virtual via Zoom) This course will help you write your memories and stories, using commonly available apps.
