Lions Club of Minnamurra Fishy Tales September2020 Newsletter Welcome Welcome to the latest edition of Fishy Tales for 2020. Secretary Roger has rather optimistically submitted the upcoming Calendar of Events - something that has been missing for some time. In addition, there’s a new section called Picture Gallery which, with your input, will continue in future editions. Together with lots of information about Lions initiatives as well as the usual sections and of course, the ubiquitous Back Pages, hopefully this should make for some interesting reading. Hope you enjoy it! President’s Board Update & Report • On Monday morning, myself and a small group of Minnamurra Lions Club members met with Kiama Council Project Engineer Mallory McLennan on the proposed quarry site for the BMX Bike Skills project. It was a very informative meeting with Mallory outlining details of the project and the role our club will be expected to play in coming months. Our major commitment will be to build the various ramps from materials supplied by the council and possibly do some later landscaping of the site. Our group expressed confidence that there are enough skills and knowledge amongst our members to handle the work. We have also had an offer of voluntary help from Nathan Kolega (who is my neighbour) who runs a successful building company. MLC has had a long association with the quarry site dating back some 20 years when we built a number of roofed picnic tables that are still in reasonable condition today. Preliminary work has already begun and council hopes to have earthworks and fencing in place by mid-November, provided the weather stays reasonably dry. • In other news, the Board has formalised the sponsorship arrangement with Elgas for the supply of up to 40 LPG cylinders a year and approved the designs for appropriate decals on our new trailer. • A cheque for $100 has been presented to Kiama High School to cover the Service to School award to be announced at the school's Year 12 annual award presentations next month. Sadly, COVID –19 restrictions will not allow our club's presence on the night.
President’s Board Update & Report- continued • Ken Horspool advised the board that there have been some difficulties with the supply of Lions hats but those who are still awaiting their order will get them when available. • Vice President Gerard and myself are booked as delegates to the online, District AGM, but there are still two places available if anyone else is interested. Please let Roger know ASAP. • With additional BBQs and our involvement in the BMX Skills project, the months through until Christmas look very busy for our club. As the old saying goes: "many hands make light work." Until we get greater certainty about meetings taking place and health restrictions, we have decided that we are not going to re-introduce the option of choosing your own main meal just yet. Therefore the dinner main course on the night will be a set menu - however there will be a bit of a difference. Dinner will consist of a finger licking good entrée followed by a plate sized pizza for you to devour. You have the choice of either a Supreme pizza or an Aegean (vegetarian) pizza . You must let the Meals Coordinator know what pizza you want when you confirm your attendance. As we are still restricted by numbers, this meeting will very much be on a first in first served basis. Don’t forget to also let us know if you cannot come to the meeting.

News from the Tail Twister - The Rumours Register A reminder of the four parts that comprise each Rumour: The Rumour Ratio - how much is truthful; the Rumour itself plus background; the Identifier- identifies the Lion in poetic fashion; the Nickname - suggested nickname that the member will be known as in Minnamurra Lions circles. The Cultural Attaché Rumour Ratio: About 50% Truth Rumour Since our new President has taken office he has been going to great lengths to smarten himself up. Rumours of a new wardrobe, cutting back on the grog and even the new presence of a North Shore accent to his voice. However we all know about his background as a journo, the amount of hours in pubs greasing up to pollies and rubbing shoulders with the less savoury characters in our community, Anything for a story basically. So we won't be conned by this new Macca. The Identifier Paul Macca's been knighted new pres, Now cultured! (or that's what he says) He's too much an Occa A cultural shocker! More like Barry Humphry's Sir Les! Nickname: Sir Les Colourblind Rumour Ratio: About 10% Truth (but heck - it’s a great rumour Rumour Apparently a derro's drink of choice is metho (cheap and strong). The problem being that a poison in metho affects the eyesight of those that imbibe too much, especially their ability to identify colour. It seems that we have our own derro in Minnamurra Lions! What other excuse would Heatho have for selecting the colour of his car? The Identifier "I must have been hitting the metho!" Said John Hetho our resident derro. When asked why he bought, A car that is fraught With a paint job that's diarrhea yellow! Nickname: The Derro
News from the Tail Twister - The Rumours Register - continued The Hungry Volunteer Rumour Ratio: About 60% Truth Rumour John Knox is one of our best local volunteers with his work at the markets, whale watch platform, BBQs etc but he also travels to distant places to volunteer by assisting farmers in times of trouble (drought, fires etc). In many cases these farmers provide accommodation and are very willing to sit and yarn and share their food and drinks. (That was before finding out how much Knoxie likes his tucker!) The Identifier John Knox is a great volunteer. Helps people afar and just near, The challenge for folks Put up with his jokes And provide him with chips, pies and beer! Nickname: Hippo - after the game Hungry, Hungry Hippo A Glossary of Terms from the Rumours Register For those of you who tend to forget the nicknames associated with the various rumours from the register (and who don’t wish to incur a fine for not using the correct name when referring to a fellow Lion at a Dinner Meeting), below is a Glossary of Terms from the register. Lion Reason for Rumour Nickname Roger Popular with the ladies at golf Studmuffin (or Muffin) Martin Promotes products like Alf from the Home & Away TV Show Alf Ken Overly devoted to doing stuff for Minnamurra Lions The Devoted (or Devo) Geoff Not quite tough enough for his truck like 4 X 4 Powderpuff Hugh Just a plain old-fashioned romantic towards Marie Romeo Noel Has a nightmare every time he sees his tree on Kiama Golf course Nightmare Paul Our cultural attaché – but a bit too ocker (a la Barry Humphries) Sir Les Hetho Colourblind! Look at the colour of his current car. Derro Knoxy Great volunteer who like his tucker (like Hungry, Hungry Hippo) Hippo
The Back Pages Thanks to all the Lions who sent me items for inclusion on the Back Page. Even if they’re in bad taste or you think I’ve probably seen them before, just keep them coming! The Editor A Golf Injury Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man, and im- mediately began to apologize. “Please allow me to help. I'm a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me," she told “Oh no, I'll be all right. I'll be fine in a few minutes, ” the man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal po- sition, still clasping his hands at his groin. At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside. She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked, "How does that feel?" "Feels great," he replied, "but I still think my thumb's broken." Courtesy of Kevin D
