The Maundy Thursday Liturgy With the nightfall, our Lenten observance comes to an end, and we gather with Christians around the world to begin the Three Days during which we participate once again in the saving power of Jesus’ passing over from death to life. At the heart of the Maundy Thursday liturgy is Jesus’ commandment to love one another. As Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, we are called to follow his example as we humbly care for one another, especially the poor and the unloved. At the Lord’s table we remember Jesus’ sacrifice of his life, even as we are called to offer ourselves in love for the life of the world. The ommission of the benediction at the end of the service indicates the continuity between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The stripping of the altar during the final hymn is symbolic of Jesus’ humiliation at the hands of the soliders and authorities, and it marks our movement with our Lord at the cross. Psalm 22 was quoted by Jesus as he was being put to death. “And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’” (Matthew 27:46). 3
GATHERING SONG Kyrie Bill Harris Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy WELCOME AND CANDLE LIGHTING CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Pastor: Friends in Christ, in this Lenten season we have heard our Lord’s call to struggle against sin, death, and the devil – all that keeps us from loving God and each other. This is the struggle to which we were called at baptism. Within the community of the church, God never wearies of forgiving sin and giving the peace of reconciliation. On this night let us confess our sin against God and our neighbor, and enter the celebration of the great Three Days reconciled with God and with one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Pastor: Most merciful God, All: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. 4
Pastor: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen. HYMN Forgive Our Sins As We Forgive ELW 605 1. “Forgive our sins as we forgive,” you taught us, Lord, to pray; but you alone can grant us grace to live the words we say. 2. How can your pardon reach and bless the unforgiving heart that broods on wrongs and will not let old bitterness depart? 3. In blazing light your cross reveals the truth we dimly knew: how trifling others’ debts to us; how great our debt to you! 4. Lord, cleanse the depths within our souls and bid resentment cease; then, by your mercy reconciled, our lives will spread your peace. Text: Rosamond E. Herklots, Music: the Sacred Harp, Text © Oxford University Press, Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A706051 PRAYER OF THE DAY Eternal God, in the sharing of a meal your Son established a new covenant for all people, and in the washing of feet he showed us the dignity of service. Grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these signs of our life in faith may speak again to our hearts, feed our spirits, and refresh our bodies, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 5

STRIPPING OF THE ALTAR The Altar is stripped marking our movement with Jesus to the cross. Psalm 22 (Readers: Greg and Nancy Morrison; Native flute: Cheri Sorensen) Our worship continues tomorrow on Good Friday: 11:00 am on all our digital channels 12:00 noon in the sanctuary 6:00 pm on the lawn 9
The Good Friday Liturgy At the heart of the Good Friday liturgy is the passion according to John, which proclaims Jesus as a triumphant king who reigns from the cross. The ancient title for this day—the triumph of the cross—reminds us that the church gathers not to mourn this day but to celebrate Christ’s life-giving passion and to find strength and hope in the tree of life. In the ancient bidding prayer we offer petitions for all the world for whom Christ died. There is no benediction or dismissal since our worship does not end tonight, but continues tomorrow in the Vigil of Easter 10
We gather in silent prayer MUSIC In the Shadow of the Cross Ropps and Amy Ellis Here, in the shadow of the cross, we remember love, we remember love. Here, in the shadow of the cross, we remember hope, we remember hope. We remember hope. Here, in the shadow of the cross, we remember grace, we remember grace. Come in peace, and remember. Words: Barbara Furman PRAYER OF THE DAY Merciful God, your Son was lifted up on the cross to draw all people to himself. Grant that we who have been born out of his wounded side may at all times find mercy in him, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. READING Isaiah 52:13- 53:12 READING Hebrews 10:16-25 GOSPEL John 18:1 - 19:42 SERMON … Breaking … Pastor Adam Berndt HYMN O Sacred Head, now Wounded ELW 351 1. O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown; O sacred head, what glory, what bliss till now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine. 11
2. How pale thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn; how does thy face now languish, which once was bright as morn! Thy grief and bitter passion were all for sinners’ gain; mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain. 3. What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend, for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? Oh, make me thine forever, and, should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee. 4. Lord, be my consolation; shield me when I must die; remind me of thy passion when my last hour draws nigh. These eyes, new faith receiving, from thee shall never move; for all who die believing die safely in thy love. SONG At the Cross There’s a place where mercy reigns and never dies, there’s a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide; Where all the love I’ve ever found comes like a flood, comes flowing down. Chorus 1 At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life. I’m in awe of You, I’m in awe of You. Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white. I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. There’s a place where sin and shame are powerless, where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness; Where all the love I’ve ever found comes like a flood, comes flowing down. Chorus Here my hope is found, here on holy ground; Here I bow down, here I bow down. Here, arms open wide, here You saved my life; Here I bow down, here I bow Chorus 2 I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. The Vigil of Easter A Digital Experience The services of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Vigil of Easter unfold in a single movement, as the church each year passes with Christ through death to life – God breaking through. In the darkness of this night we gather with Christians throughout the world to celebrate Christ’s Passover from death to life. The early Christians continued to observe the first Passover in which God delivered the people of Israel from slavery at the hands of Pharaoh. They saw the death and resurrection of Christ as their passing over from death to life, from darkness to light, from bondage to freedom. On the night before Easter they baptized those who had been prepared during Lent, and observed a night vigil, awaiting the coming of the Lord. The Paschal Candle is “introduced” each year to the congregation during the Easter Vigil. As a symbol of the Resurrection it is lighted for each worship service during the great fifty days of Easter. The Paschal Candle is placed near the baptismal font, as a visual reminder that in our Baptism we are crucified and resurrected with Christ. The candle is lighted at each celebration of Baptism. It is also lighted at each funeral, recalling that in our Baptism we have already died and been raised with Christ. (Romans 6:3-5) Emerging from pandemic this year, be invited to hold vigil at home. The first three sections that comprise the Vigil of Easter: The Service of the Light, The Service of Readings, and The Service of Baptism will be posted on our digital channels after 18
sunset. Wait and watch with them together at once or one each hour until the first Easter proclamation and gospel breaks through at midnight! (If you are a morning person, these will make a good sunrise vigil instead) The last section of the Vigil of Easter, The Service of Holy Communion will be celebrated at our worship at 9am on Sunday of the Resurrection of Our Lord.
