                  Good Friday – April 2, 2021
What is a Tenebrae Service? The word TENEBRAE comes from the Latin word meaning
SHADOWS. In the Christian Church, often times a Tenebrae service was held in
remembrance of the passion and death of Jesus. During such a service, Scriptures were
read with the singing of anthems between readings. As each reading was completed, a
candle was extinguished, symbolic of the progressive darkening and shadows we see in the
suffering and death of Jesus, and in man's darkening depths of sin for which Jesus died.
Finally, the Christ Candle will also be extinguished, symbolizing the death of Christ. The
strepitus is heard, a harsh noise indicating the closing of the tomb and earthquake. Then
the Christ Candle is again lit in anticipation of our Lord’s resurrection. In our services
today, we continue this tradition with an adaptation of such a service.
Offering — The offering plates will not be passed during the service. You may place your
offering in the basket in the entry of church either upon your entry or exit of the service. It
is the joy and privilege of the members of St. Matthew’s to support the Gospel outreach in
the Oconomowoc area and throughout the world. If you are visiting with us, please do not
feel obligated to participate in the offering. As God’s Word moves your heart, know that
your offerings will support the spread of the Gospel. We now offer several options of
electronic giving as well. Visit our website and click on “GIVE” or you can text
CARDINALS to 73256. You may give a one-time gift or set up reoccurring gifts.
After the Service — You are asked to leave the sanctuary silently (without usher
assistance), maintaining the spirit of solemn reflection on our Savior’s death. There will
be no organ music after the service.

                Large print service folders are available from an usher upon request.

CALL TO WORSHIP Glory Be to Jesus
                                                                                    First Steps PreK
M: We begin this service in the name of our Triune God – God the Father, God the Son
      and God the Holy Spirit.
C:    Amen.

M: We preach Christ crucified. Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our
      sorrows, yet we considered Him stricken by God, smitten by Him and afflicted.
C: He was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The
      punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are
      healed.

M: We all, like sheep, have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way.
C: And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

M:    Let us pray.
      Loving Father in heaven, it was your will that your Son, our Savior, suffered at the
      hands of men and endured the shame of the cross. Grant that as we walk in the way
      of his cross we find it to be the only way of life and peace; through your Son, Jesus
      Christ our Lord.
C:    Amen.

SUNG RESPONSE (12:00 and 4:00 PM) O Sacred Head, Now Wounded
                                                                  sung by congregation
                     (6:00 and 7:30 PM) small group choir

O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,
Now scornfully surrounded, with thorns your only crown,
O sacred head, no glory now from your face does shine;
Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call you mine.

My burden in your passion, Lord, you have borne for me,
For it was my transgression, my shame, on Calvary.
I cast me down before you; wrath is my rightful lot.
Have mercy, I implore you; Redeemer, spurn me not!

What language shall I borrow to thank you, dearest Friend,
For this, your dying sorrow, your pity without end?
O make me yours forever, and keep me strong and true;
Lord, let me never, never outlive my love for you.
                                            2
Lord, be my consolation, my shield when I must die;
Remind me of your passion when my last hour draws nigh.
My eyes will then behold you, upon your cross will dwell;
My heart will then enfold you—who dies in faith does well!

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH FOR GOOD FRIDAY

M: Heavenly Father, you are a just God who accepts nothing less than perfection. We
         confess that all too often we fail to realize how much our sins offend you. We try
         to forget that the wages of our sins truly is death. We try to convince ourselves that
         there actually is no hell. Lead us to recognize the seriousness of our sinfulness.
         Lead us also to admit our inability to make things right with you.
C: Teach us to look to you as the only one who can make us just and right.

M: Today we are reminded not only of your justice but also of your love. You did not
         spare your own Son but gave him as a ransom for each one of us. Comfort us with
         the knowledge of this great love. Give us peace in the forgiveness of all our sins.
C: When we feel our guilt, point us to the cross, where our guilt was washed away
         in Jesus’ blood.

M: Lord Jesus, we thank you for paying the debt that we could not pay. We thank you
         for coming to earth so that we could be with you forever in heaven.
C: For being our perfect substitute, we thank you, Lord Jesus.

M: Son of God, you offered up your body as an unblemished sacrifice for sin and
         commended your spirit into the hands of your Father. Teach us to cast the cares of
         this brief life on our heavenly Father and commit our bodies and souls to his love.
C: Give us the courage to face death, knowing that it is the gate to our home in
         heaven.

M: Hear us, Lord, as we offer our personal thanks for the forgiveness that you have
         given us and for the home that you have won for us.

Silent prayer.

M: The cross was once an instrument of death. It is now a sign of life.
C: Dear Savior, we humbly kneel at the cross in awe of your power and of your
         love. Amen.
                                               3
LORD’S PRAYER

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will
          be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us
          our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation,
          but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
          now and forever. Amen.

SOLO (4:00 pm) The Power of the Cross
                                                                            Sophie Eckl

Oh, to see the dawn                                 Now the daylight flees;
Of the darkest day: Now the ground beneath
Christ on the road to Calvary Quakes as its Maker bows His head
Tried by sinful men Curtain torn in two
Torn and beaten, then                               Dead are raised to life;
Nailed to a cross of wood "Finished!" the vict'ry cry

Refrain                                             Refrain
This, the pow'r of the cross:
Christ became sin for us; Oh, to see my name
Took the blame, bore the wrath Written in the wounds
We stand forgiven at the cross For through Your suffering I am free
                                                    Death is crushed to death;
Oh, to see the pain Life is mine to live
Written on Your face Won through Your selfless love
Bearing the awesome weight of sin
Ev'ry bitter thought This, the pow'r of the cross:
Ev'ry evil deed Son of God - slain for us
Crowning Your bloodstained brow What a love! What a cost!
                                                    We stand forgiven at the cross

THE SACRAMENT (7:30 PM)

          WORDS OF INSTITUTION

                                             4
HYMN RESPONSE 268:3 Lamb of God, Pure and Holy

Lamb of God, pure and holy,
Who on the cross did suffer,
Ever patient and lowly,
Yourself to scorn did offer.
All sins you carried for us,
Else had despair reigned o’er us:
Your peace be with us, O Jesus!

DISTRIBUTION HYMN 98 Jesus, I Will Ponder Now

                                    5
THE SEVEN WORDS OF CHRIST SPOKEN FROM THE CROSS

THE FIRST WORD                                                              Luke 23:26-34
     26As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in
  from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A
  large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for
  him. 28Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me;
  weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For the time will come when you will say,
  'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never
  nursed!' 30Then " 'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover
  us!" ' 31For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is
  dry?"
      32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.
  33When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with

  the criminals--one on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them,
  for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting
  lots.

                                             6
SUNG RESPONSE A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth

A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth
Our guilt and evil bearing
And, laden with the sins of earth,
None else the burden sharing.
Goes patient on, grows weak and faint,
To slaughter led without complaint,
That spotless life to offer,
Bears shame and stripes and wounds and death,
Anguish and mockery and says,
"Willing all this I suffer."

This Lamb is Christ, the soul's great friend,
The Lamb of God, our Savior;
Him God the Father chose to send
To gain for us his favor.
"Go forth, my Son," the Father said,
"And free my children from their dread
Of guilt and condemnation.
The wrath and stripes are hard to bear,
But by your passion they will share
The fruit of your salvation."

"Yes, Father, yes, most willingly
 I'll bear what you command me.
My will conforms to your decree;
I'll do what you have asked me."
O wondrous Love, what have you done!
The Father offers up his Son,
Desiring our salvation.
O Love, how strong you are to save!
You make his bed within the grave
Who built the earth's foundation.

                                           7
THE SECOND WORD                                                             Luke 23:35-43
       35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He
   saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One."
       36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37and

   said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."
       38There was a written notice above him, which read:
       39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ?

   Save yourself and us!"
       40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are

   under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds
   deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
       42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. "
       43Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

SUNG RESPONSE Stricken, Smitten, And Afflicted
                         12:00 Lucas Krogmann, 4:00 Congregation, 6 & 7:30 – Small Group Choir

Stricken, smitten and afflicted, see Him dying on the tree!
‘Tis the Christ by man rejected, yes, my soul, ‘tis He, ‘tis He.
‘Tis the long expected prophet, David’s son, yet David’s Lord;
By His Son God now has spoken, ‘tis the true and faithful Word.

Tell me, ye who hear Him groaning, was there ever grief like His?
Friends through fear, His cause disowning, foes insulting His distress;
Many hands were raised to wound Him, none would interpose to save,
But the deepest stroke that pierced Him was the stroke that justice gave.

Ye, who think of sin but lightly, nor suppose the evil great,
Here may view its nature rightly, here its guilt may estimate.
Mark the sacrifice appointed, see who bears the awful load,
‘Tis the Word, the Lord’s anointed, Son of Man, and Son of God!

Here we have a firm foundation, here the refuge of the lost.
Christ, the Rock of Our Salvation, His the name on which we boast!
Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, sacrificed to cancel guilt,
none shall ever be confounded who on Him their hope have built.

                                             8
THE THIRD WORD                                                                John 19:25-27
       25Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of
   Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple
   whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son,"
   27and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her

   into his home.

SUNG RESPONSE Jesus, In Your Dying Woes

1. Jesus, in your dying woes, 3. Jesus, loving to the end
   Even while your lifeblood flows, Her whose heart your sorrows rend,
   Craving pardon for your foes: And your dearest human friend:
   Hear us, holy Jesus! Hear us, holy Jesus!

2. Jesus, pitying the sighs 6. Jesus, all our ransom paid,
   Of the thief who near you dies, All your Father’s will obeyed.
   Promising him paradise: By Your suff’rings perfect made:
   Hear us, holy Jesus! Hear us, holy Jesus!

THE FOURTH WORD                                                          Matthew 27:45-49
       45From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46About
   the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which
   means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
       47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling Elijah."
       48
          Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put
   it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, "Now leave him alone.
   Let's see if Elijah comes to save him."

SUNG RESPONSE                                                                       Psalm 22
                            12:00 Lucas Krogmann, 4:00 Tom Thiele, 6 & 7:30 – Small Group Choir

My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from helping me,
Far from the words of my groaning?
Oh, My God, I cry by day but you do not answer.
I cry by night, but I find no rest.
                                             9
THE FIFTH AND SIXTH WORDS John 19:28-30
       28Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be
   fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a
   sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips.
   30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his

   head and gave up his spirit.

SUNG RESPONSE Go To Dark Gethsemane
Go to dark Gethsemane,
All who feel the tempter's pow'r;
Your Redeemer's conflict see.
Watch with him one bitter hour;
Turn not from his griefs away;
Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

Follow to the judgment hall;
View the Lord of life arraigned.
Oh, the wormwood and the gall!
Oh, the pangs his soul sustained!
Shun not suff'ring, pain, or loss;
Learn of him to bear the cross.

Calv'ry's mournful mountain climb;
There, adoring at his feet,
Mark that miracle of time,
God's own sacrifice complete.
"It is finished!" hear him cry;
Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

THE SEVENTH WORD                                                            Luke 23:44-46
       44Itwas now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the
   ninth hour, 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
   46Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When

   he had said this, he breathed his last.

                                                                              Tom Thiele

We celebrate the Lord’s Supper during the 7:30 PM Worship Service. In his Word,
God makes it clear that Holy Communion is to be shared by people who proclaim a
common faith (1 Corinthians 11:26; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17). Without judging anyone’s
hearts, we invite those who share in our confession by their membership in our
congregation or another congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod
(WELS) or the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) and who are properly prepared (1
Corinthians 11:27-29) to receive the Sacrament. Guests, please speak with one of the
pastors about instruction in our Christian faith and this Sacrament so you will be ready to
partake of this wonderful meal in full unity with us after that instruction. Thank you for
respecting the way we celebrate the Lord's Supper in our congregations.

Distribution – Communion distribution procedures will be announced by the Pastor.
Please follow the direction of the ushers. Cups of non-alcoholic wine (light in color) are in
the center of each tray and are reserved for people who will be taking them because of
health concerns.
