Meet the First Presbyterian Church Confirmation Class of 2020 - 2021 To say that this has been a challenging year for our Confirmation Class would be a tremendous understatement. When they first committed to undergoing a year-long course of study in August 2020, our eighth graders were just figuring out how to safely attend school, play sports, take part in other extra-curricular activities, and even spend time with their friends in a pandemic. In addition to all that, they had to grapple with how to participate in a rigorous Confirmation program that maintained high expectations every week. The class began meeting in a variety of ways - on Zoom, outdoors at student homes, in person at church, distanced and masked, and often Zoom/In-Person hybrid situations when Covid-19 quarantines were in effect. These students persevered in a remarkable way and have completed the year with excellent attendance and wonderful attitudes overall. They met each Sunday morning for 32 weeks and even were able to have a half-day retreat. Together, they worked, studied, prayed, and thought about what their faith means to them. They were challenged to memorize The Lord’s Prayer, The Apostles’ Creed, Question 4 from The Confirmation Study Catechism, and scripture verses including John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8, John 1:14, Romans 5:8 and Psalm 23. Many rose to the challenge. These 14 Confirmands have formed relationships with each other and the elders who volunteered to shepherd them through this process. Throughout the year, they have been readying themselves to stand before the congregation as young adults and either be baptized or claim the promises their parents made for them at their baptism. They have written a Statement of Faith summarizing their personal faith journey to this point in their lives. They have been duly examined by the Session and today are being received into full church membership. We are pleased to present this group of young people to you as committed disciples of Jesus Christ and the newest members of First Presbyterian Church. Martha Burriss, Andrea Storie and Anne Tedder, teachers ************************************************************************** A special thank you to the elder-mentors who worked with and supported these students all year: Bill Cavedo, Jody Crudup, Wes Edwards, Laura Jones, Saunders McCollum and Matt West We appreciate our guest teachers: Dr. Dennis Tedder, Rev.
