Pastoral Letter from Rev Kenneth Stott My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you (John 15:12-15) Dear friends, And I mean that most sincerely! “Dear friends.” As I was driving to the church this morning I heard a news report that a major social media outlet was tightening up its rules. Apparently, a number of organisations measure their success by the number of “likes or “friends” that they have. It is important to be able to show that you are liked and followed, and it gives you credibility especially if you want people to invest in your organisation. The problem is that many of these “friends” or “likes” are not real-‐ they are manufactured and created and offered for a price. We have become accustomed to the phrase “fake news” and so now we now have “fake friends” or “fake followers”. Perhaps your response is – “so what is new?” Long before we had the internet and social media we had the experience of “fake friends”. We may look back and think of painful times when we expected our friend or friends to be there for us in a time of need. There can be memories rooted in school days when we thought we had a good friend only to experience the pain of them rejecting us to go and play with another group of pupils. In later life we may have encountered a whole range of disappointments from so called friends -‐ we discover that they were not genuine, or they used the “friendship” to get something from us. There may also be times when we expected our friend to be there at a point of our need and yet they turned away from us or ignored us. It is hard to make a discovery that the friend is not what they seemed to be. In the Bible, friendship is praised as a gift to be cherished, protected and developed. I am reading the book of Proverbs at the moment and one of the reflections on life is this -‐ Proverbs 18:24 “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” This theme of friendship suggests two things to me as pastor of Perth North. The first is to be reminded that the gathering of believers is to be a place of friendship. That may appear to be too simplistic but God calls His people to love and care for each other. To think of friendships is to be challenged about our willingness to be there for others. It might jar you as cliched, but the phrase “keep it real” is a plea for many today to find places and people that are real, authentic. In our recent evening services, the group discussions reminded many of us that we may be struggling with the same questions. In 3
admitting difficulties, there is the possibility of developing a real and genuine faith in the company of real friends. It takes time and sensitivity but will we seek to be a place of growing friendships -‐ friendships that cut across age or gender divisions? There are many people today who are looking for real friendships -‐ they do not want fake smiles or even flashy gimmicks but to be in a place where love and care is given and received. What a great evangelistic opportunity we have in this friendship-‐seeking culture. Secondly, the quote at the top of the letter form John’s gospel reminds us that without compromising His holiness and power, the God of the Universe sent His son to draw us back into ambling friendship with Him. Through Jesus we can become friends with God, a friendship that allows us to experience His love and company, and which changes us and enables us to be friends with others. There may well be people who dismiss such a claim as simplistic and childish but such responses are often from people seeking to avoid the possibility of being known and loved by God. Without dwelling too long, we may remember some of the stories from the Bible where fake followers were identified and exposed. There were men and women who said one thing to God but whose hearts and minds were never really touched by His grace and love. As we look to the autumn and the coming session with anticipation, could we commit ourselves afresh to not only being open to developing new friendships within the congregation and parish, but also open to deepening our discipleship, for ultimately to be a friend with Jesus is to be shaped by Him. If all of this seems too hard, have a think about the hymn-‐ “What a friend we have in Jesus” and in particular the lines -‐ “Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there.” Your minister and friend, Kenny >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> We Need Your Help As you know the audio-visual equipment is essential to our worship on Sundays and at some other times. Currently we have a very small team of volunteers and to relieve the pressure on them we need to increase this group. Could you help us please? Full training will be given and one of our trained volunteers would be alongside you until you were fully confident. If you are interested and willing to help with this vital work, please contact: Douglas Clarke, tel. 630135; Shauna Conochie, tel. 628262; or the Church office, tel. 622298 4

Twenty-‐three members enjoyed a lovely walk at Loch Turret in glorious sunshine. After the walk we had an excellent meal at Crieff Golf Club. The Walk leaders meeting will take place on Tuesday 14th August at 2pm in the Tryst. Additional leaders are required and if anyone can lead a walk or two then please come along. Please advise if you cannot attend the meeting. The annual dinner is on the 15th August and once again is to be held in the Royal George Hotel. Further details from Liz Thomson or Martin Knight. The Wednesday walkers will resume with two walks in August, on the 1st and 29th. This recently formed group has been a great success and the folk who attended the six weeks in April/May were anxious that we keep it going. These walks are no more than two miles walking from the church and returning to the church, so relatively flat. There is usually a bit of local Perth history included in the walkabout. 6

DISCIPLESHIP For anyone who takes discipleship and following Jesus Christ seriously, and who wants to grow as a Christian, this could be for you. A 20-‐week course LIFE TO THE FULL is starting in the Upper Room, North Church, on Thursday 27th September 2-‐4pm. For new believers and seekers, this is a nurture course. For more mature followers of Christ, this course provides not only a solid base and spring-‐board for further study, but the application of truths learned will motivate and equip the new Christian and refresh the mature Christian for active service within the church for the glory of God. Home study is a vital part of this course, as is the weekly 2 hour group meeting, and commitment is needed. For those who appreciate a Certificate, an exam is available, but by no means obligatory. Cost – approximately £11 including P&P for study books which are only available through SEAN. SEAN (pronounced say-‐an) was born in South America to train pastors and leaders among the indigenous population, who did not speak Spanish as a first language, or have the national curriculum. It is a programmed course. Minimum educational requirements are 3rd year primary! There are no upper limits! I have led a course which a lady who only had the minimum educational requirements, and also a retired NHS consultant with a PhD, a committed Christian and very knowledgeable about the Scriptures, both benefited enormously from the SEAN courses. Interested? Have a chat with your minister Rev. Kenny Stott, or with Katie Dalgliesh, or phone Kirsten Walker (member of the Free Church, Tulloch). Due to holidays and other personal arrangements, please let Kirsten know by 31st August at the very latest, as books have to be ordered.
