Thoughts on Stewardship:
As we enter another week of uncharted territory with the COVID-19 crisis, I am hopeful that everyone
is staying safe, healthy and at home. If the Lord has blessed you and your family with the income to do
so, please consider giving to the Lord’s work here at St Paul’s.
 to those who have income coming in, in the midst of our country’s current situation, we greatly
        appreciate your willingness to give
 to those who have been affected financially by our country's current situation, please be sure
to care for your family; it's important to give something, but if that has to be reduced because
of your situation, do so in God's peace.
 you can contribute in the following ways:
        1. mail your offering to the church.
        2. Online. Go to splco.org, click in the upper right corner on orange offerings/donate button
            to set up an account
        3. On your smartphone via the GivePlus app. Search your phone’s app store for “GivePlus
Church” to download and give through the app.

Introduction

A. When Help is Welcome

Kids/adults can you think of a time when you were helped at just the
right time in just the right way?

B. When Help is Misplaced

Can you think of time when you received “help” that—while it might have
been well-intended—was not really helpful?

C. The True Helper

CCT: The Holy Spirit brings ___________ to our every need.

I. Jesus’ Teaching on The Holy Spirit

A. Context of John 14...

                                              7
B. “Keep” My Commandments

John 14:15 (ESV)
15 “If you love me, you will k eep m y commandments.”

Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV)
19Go the re fore and m ake disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Fathe r and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 te aching them to observe all that I have
com m anded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

C The “Helper”

John 14:16 (ESV)
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.

PAR AKLĒTOS (n. fr. (para, beside + kaleō, to call), lit., called to one’s side, i.e., to one’s
aid, . . . suggests the capability or adaptability for giving aid. It was used in a court of
justice to denote a legal assistant, counsel for the defence, an advocate; then, generally,
one who pleads another’s cause, an intercessor, advocate, as in 1 John 2:1, of the Lord
Je sus. In the widest sense, it signifies a succourer, comforter. C hrist was this to His
disciples, by the implication of His word “another (allos, another of the same sort, not
heteros, diffe rent) Comforter,” whe n speaking of the Holy Spirit, John 14:16. In 14:26;
15:26; 16:7 He calls Him “the Comforter.¶” . . . (W.E. Vine and F.F. Bruce, Vine’s Expository
Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words (Old Tappan NJ: Revell, 1981), 208.)

D. The “Spirit of Truth”

John 14:16–17 (ESV)
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
17 e ve n the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot re ceive, because it neither sees him
nor k nows him. You know him, for he dwe lls with you and will be in you.

Pneuma= ____________/Spirit

                                                    8
Genesis 2:7 (ESV)
7the n the L ORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living cre ature.

“Spirit of truth” // “breath of truth” = sense of giving spiritual ________

E. The Work of the Son

John 14:18–19 (ESV)
18 “I will not le ave you as orphans; I will com e to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world
will se e me no more , but you will se e me. Because I live, you also will live .

II. You Also Will Live

1 Peter 3:18–22 (ESV)
18For C hrist also suffere d once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might
bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which
he we nt and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey,
whe n God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in
which a fe w, that is, eight persons, we re brought safely through water. 21 Baptism,
which corre sponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as
an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the re surrection of Jesus C hrist, 22 who
has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and
powe rs having been subje cted to him.

To be baptized in the Name of the Father and of the + Son and the Holy
Spirit is to be taken into the ______________ of God.

                                               9
III. Life in God: Coming Alongside to Help with Public Worship

A. Summary

B. Re-opening Worship

We’ve been good citizens
  Commandments 4-5
  Commandments 1-3

If we can have 300 people in Wal-mart, etc. then…

There is no “________” for corona-virus yet.

We have to exercise __________.

CCT: The Holy Spirit brings _________________ to our every need.

As we prepare to re-open public worship, this will mean:

   Limit number of _______________
   Safety practices
______________ distribution of The Lord’s Supper
   Clean surfaces (need ________________)

THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Old Testament Reading: Psalm 66:8–20
Ble ss our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has k ept our soul
am ong the living and has not le t our fe et slip. For you, O God, have tested us; you have
trie d us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our
back s; you let men ride over our heads; we we nt through fire and through water; ye t you
have brought us out to a place of abundance. I will com e into your house with burnt
offe rings; I will pe rform my vows to you, that which m y lips uttered and m y mouth
prom ised whe n I was in trouble. I will offer to you burnt offerings of fattened animals, with
the sm oke of the sacrifice of rams; I will m ake an offering of bulls and goats. Come and
he ar, all you who fear God, and I will te ll what he has done for m y soul. I crie d to him with
m y m outh, and high praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the
Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of
m y praye r. Ble ssed be God, because he has not re jected my prayer or removed his
ste adfast love from m e!

Epistle: 1 Peter 3:13–22
Now who is the re to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should
suffe r for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,
but in your hearts re gard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a
de fe nse to anyone who asks you for a re ason for the hope that is in you; ye t do it with
ge ntleness and re spect, having a good conscience, so that, whe n you are slandered, those
who re vile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for
doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil. For C hrist also suffere d once
for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he m ight bring us to God, being put to
de ath in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he we nt and proclaimed to the
spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, whe n God’s patience waited in the
days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons,
we re brought safely through wate r. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you,
not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience ,
through the re surrection of Jesus C hrist, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand
of God, with angels, authorities, and powe rs having been subjected to him.

Holy Gospel: John 14:15-21
[Je sus said:] “If you love m e, you will k eep my commandments. And I will ask the Father,
and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom
the world cannot rece ive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he
dwe lls with you and will be in you. “I will not le ave you as orphans; I will com e to you. Yet
a little while and the world will see m e no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you
also will live . In that day you will k now that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in
you. W hoever has my commandments and k eeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who
love s me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

                                                                                May 17, 2020
