Transformed By Grace Poured Out For Others March 3, 2019 "...unless it is Christ who, not opens the way of salvation to all, but actually saves his people, there is no ground to believe that there will ever be a saved world. The salvation of the world is absolutely dependent (as is the salvation of the individual soul) on its salvation being the sole work of the Lord Christ himself, in his irresistible might." -B. B. Warfield (The Plan of Salvation) 1
Welcome Visitors Please take a Zion coffee mug from the welcome table in the foyer! Morning Worship service times are at 8:30 and 11:00. Sunday School classes and adult Fellowships for all ages meet at 9:45. Rest Rooms are in the front hall. Hearing Assistance devices are available on the table in the foyer. "Busy Bags" for young children are hanging on racks at the back of the worship hall. Infant and Toddler nursery are available in the lower level; down the stairs at the north end of the foyer. Children’s Church: In the 11:00 service, there is a Children’s Church option for kids ages 3, 4, and 5. Children may be dismissed at the beginning of the sermon and return during the final hymn. Worship at Zion The Zion worship service has a structure and sequence that reflects the way scripture shows how God meets his people. God has made himself known to the world in Jesus Christ, who is God the Son, who took on human flesh, bled and died for our sins, rose from the dead, ascended to the Father’s right hand, intercedes for us now, and will come again to receive us at the end. The church assembles on the Lord’s day to name the name of Jesus, which is above every name. • We enter his courts with thanksgiving and praise • We kneel before him in confession and repentance • We stand and hear again the Gospel’s promise of mercy and forgiveness • We bring our tribute offerings to our King • We hear the voice of God from scripture • We eat at the table Jesus has provided for us • We depart with his blessing and promise that He will be with us until he comes for us again. All baptized Christians who are members in good standing with their home congregation are welcome to join us at the Lord’s table today. The Mission of Zion Church By God’s grace Zion Church will be a Christ-centered ministry committed to worship God by proclaiming the truth of Scripture and relating to one another on the basis of the transforming power of the Gospel. As God’s people living in community, we will equip one another to pour out our lives for Christ at home, in the city, on the campus, across the Midwest, and to the ends of the earth. This vision rests upon the supernatural work of Christ who alone can build His church through the Spirit’s work in our lives together. 2
Lord's Day Worship Prelude Welcome and Announcements Entrance to Worship Call to Worship Psalm 119:7 I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. Worship Through Confession & Praise (music is in the back of this worship folder) † Hymn Come Thou, Almighty King (Trinity Hymnal #101) † Worship Choruses Blessed Be Your Name ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus I Come By the Blood Prayer of Praise Confession of Faith: The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with 3
glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. † Hymn of Praise With Grateful Heart My Thanks I Bring (Trinity Hymnal #88) Preparation for Confession Hosea 6:1-2 “Come, let us return to the Lord; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up. 2After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him. Silent Confession of Sin † Declaration of Grace Colossians 1:13-16 [the Father] has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things were created through him and for him. † Gloria Patri 4

Paul’s Letter to the Romans “Peace with God” Romans 5:1-11 Sermon Notes: March 3, 2019 1. The Results of Justification by Faith 2. The Love of Justification by Faith 6
Romans 5:1-11 (ESV) 1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endur- ance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. 6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Questions for Further Discussion: How have you seen the hope of the Spirit that began in suffering? (vv.3-5) Why is it hard for the natural mind to accept that we do not contribute to our own salva- tion? How does God love for you (while still a sinner, dying for you, v.8) shape the way you love others? Billy Graham’s first bestseller in 1953 was titled Peace with God (from today’s passage). Why is this such an important theme in Romans? What does the title imply? Westminster Confession of Faith (1647) VIII. Of Christ the Mediator v. The Lord Jesus, by His perfect obedience, and sacrifice of Himself, which He through the eternal Spirit, once offered up unto God, has fully satisfied the justice of the Father (Romans 5:19; Hebrews 9:14, 16; 10:14; Ephesians 5:2); and purchased, not only reconciliation, but an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven, for all those whom the Father has given unto Him (Daniel 9:24, 26; Colossians 1:19-20; Ephesians 1:11, 14; John 17:2; Hebrews 9:12, 15). 7

Most of us have experienced suffering in our lives but few of us know how to voice our sorrow biblically. In Scripture, laments give us a language of sorrow to speak to God and one another. The service is composed of three key elements of worship: Scripture, Song and Prayer. Come join us as we learn to speak the language of lament and rejoice in the hope of the Gospel. Committed to God's Truth We believe in a holy God who exists eternally in three persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe the Bible is the written word of God, and we hold to it as our authority in all matters of faith and life. We believe all people are sinners, justly deserving God’s displeasure, and incapable of saving themselves. We believe that Jesus Christ – God the Son who became man – lived a sinless life, died on the cross and rose again to accomplish our salvation. We receive this gracious gift through faith alone. We believe the Holy Spirit gives Christians the daily strength and wisdom they need to walk according to His will and grow in holiness. We believe that Jesus Christ will return to judge all mankind and to receive His people unto Himself. Copies of The Westminster Confession of Faith, Zion’s doctrinal standard, are available on the book table.
