Sunday, October 18, 2020 Stewardship {When the Lord is my Shepherd} by Joshua Eller, St. Peter’s Parishioner When thinking about writing on stewardship for the Keys, I was reminded of a sermon that Fr. Michael preached at St. Peters 10 years ago on money during the season of Lent. I decided to revisit that sermon in order to rethink through the significance of tithing and stewardship in my own life. Luke 4:1-13 tells the story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. Fr. Michael pointed out that this series of temptations is really a presentation of various ways for Jesus to be less than who he really was -- just another wonder worker, just another head of state, etc. The important part of the story is in Jesus’ response: he lived into the true life of faith as the Son of God. For me, this is the same decision I confront as an American when faced with choices about how to use my money, including stewardship as a member of St. Peters. Will I be just another consumer trying to maximize my utility with more and more consumption? Or will I live into the calling of a life of faith, a life oriented not on my will, but on the call of God? Fr. Michael’s words continue to ring in my ears: “Life is not about what you acquire; it’s about what you give away. Life is not about impressing others; it’s about becoming transparent to Christ. And life is not about achieving a certain standard of living; it’s about cultivating a life that is characterized by generosity.” This is what it means to live according to the call of God. For me, stewardship is a part of recognizing and celebrating God’s generosity toward me and living into the truth that the world and all that is in it already belongs to God. Stewardship is the opportunity to reject the deceptive call of mammon and to live into the true life of faith. And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written,“‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. -Luke 4: 1–13

In Worship, Discipleship, and Mission FAITHFULLY, HOSPITABLY, AND HUMBLY leading the Anglican Movement forward *This is a concept picture. The stone and colors will match the existing Cathedral. Hospitality is one of the qualities that St. Peter’s has always been known for. We often hear many of our first time visitors describe their experience as “warm and inviting”. When our services end and the people spread out on the lawn to visit with friends, welcome visitors, or watch their children play on the playground, the ladies of the Mary & Martha Guild are serving hot coffee, cold lemonade, or handing out cold bottles of water and other treats. These faithful ladies have demonstrated the gift of hospitality since St. Peter’s was founded. Many years ago, they developed a dream of a warm and inviting place to serve the people of St. Peter’s on Sunday mornings and other events. Their dream is now closer to reality than ever before. They have worked with Dodstone Architects, the same architects who designed St. Peter’s, to come up with the design you see here. Their goal is to have a piece of classic architecture that matches the church and that also has the functionality to serve as the hub of hospitality on Sunday mornings and special events. This design presents itself as a small chapel and has the versatility to serve the parish now and in the future as the needs may change.
The ladies of Mary & Martha have been raising funds for this special project through fundraisers and special gifts that you have seen promoted in The Keys throughout the years. All the money raised for this project has been through the efforts of the Mary & Martha Guild. No money from the building fund has been or will be used for this project. Watch The Keys over the next few weeks - Mary & Martha will have an upcoming fundraiser in November and December to hopefully complete the funds needed to construct this wonderful addition to the life of St. Peter’s. Contact Kathy Gomer at kathygomer@msn.com to learn more about this exciting project and how you can support Mary & Martha!
Meet Wesley Owens 2020-2021 Curate The Charles Simeon Institute A native Virginian and a son of two loving Christian parents, Wesley spent most of his early life in Richmond, attending a Baptist church and an all-boys Episcopal school. It was during these formative years that he became a committed disciple of the Lord Jesus and began discerning God’s call to ministry after a series of soul-stirring meditations on the book of Nehemiah. Wesley began his theological education as a Religious Studies and Philosophy double-major at the University of Virginia. While at UVA, he was an active leader in campus ministry, president of UVA’s only student-run theological society, and a summer missionary in East Asia. Upon graduating, Wesley joined the pastoral staff of Church of the Holy Spirit in Leesburg, VA, where he became interim youth pastor, adult catechist, and communications coordinator – all while living and teaching in an Anglican semi-monastic community for men. He has also served as Summer Seminarian at The Falls Church Anglican, where he devoted special attention to preaching and pastoral care. Two years ago, Wesley traveled ‘across the pond’ to Oxford University to pursue a Master of Theology and complete his ministerial training at Oxford’s Wycliffe Hall. His dissertation research, which has been extended due to COVID19, focuses on the role of monastic renewal in revitalizing contemporary Anglican mission to Western post-Christian societies. Other academic interests include sacramental theology, theological interpretation of Scripture, Thomistic ethics, and Christian responses to posthumanism. Wesley’s passion for discipleship is deeply informed by the theology and spirituality of the early monastic movement. A Benedictine at heart, he delights to accompany fellow believers in the pursuit of holiness, inviting them into joyful contemplation of the God we serve through a holistic integration of faith and everyday life. In his free time, Wesley enjoys hiking, reading, creative writing (especially poetry), international travel, and touring historical sites. Above all, he desires to know God and make Him known.
