WE PRAY AN EPIPHANY PRAYER The Lord be with you And also with you WE REFLECT ON PSALM 139 (Psalm 139:1-6,13-18) CHAT TIME: How does this psalm about God knowing you well strike you today ponder or share your thoughts ... GOD SPEAKS TO US: WE HEAR HIS WORD 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL: John 1:43-51 We have found the Messiah The Gospel of the Lord! Praise be to you, Jesus! WE LISTEN TO THE MESSAGE WE CONFESS OUR CHRISTIAN FAITH (Apostle’s Creed) I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
WE PRAY FOR THE CHURCH, THE WORLD AND EACH OTHER THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. GOD BLESSES US: WE GO WITH GOD Let us praise the Lord. Thanks be to God. WE SING O Jesus, I have promised LH371 O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end; Lord, be forever near me, my master and my friend: I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, nor wander from the pathway if you will be my guide. Still let me feel you near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, and tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw me nearer, and shield my soul from sin.
O let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; Lord, speak to reassure me, to chasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, true guardian of my soul. Lord, let me see your footmarks and in them plant my own; that I may follow boldly and in your strength alone; O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my friend. When the first flush of spring and summer flowers bloom, who doesn’t want to stop and smell the roses? So a rose garden planted as a heartwarming invitation to a church is a chance to witness to the beauty of God’s creation. Enter Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in the Perth suburb of Morley. Four years ago, its large grassed block received a magnificent makeover. Foundation members Ewald Schmidt, known as Wally, and his wife Ruth felt a push from Creation’s Chief Gardener to build a rose garden in a well-used thoroughfare to the local primary school and park. ‘The church garden looked a bit sad and it brought tears to our eyes’, said Ruth. ‘And God said “don’t stand there, do something”.’ So despite professing no green thumbs, the retired couple aged 86 and 83 respectively, did just that. ‘As we are not fenced off from our neighbourhood, not only is it a testament to all the beauty of God’s creation, it provides a lovely wider witness to caring for God’s creation and the joy God gives us through serving each other’, says Bethlehem’s Pastor Matt Bishop. Who would have thought a garden ministry could be created simply from proud perfumed stands of roses? After 66 years of marriage, the Schmidts are inseparable in their weekly toil – pruning, trimming, fertilising, watering and tidying. ‘We get an old pillow and kneel side by side – never too far from each other’, says Ruth. And they feel the Chief Gardener is with them, as they care for the roses. ‘We are just presenting God’s creation’, says Ruth. ‘When we come home, we are not tired, we feel great. We’ve been working in God’s creation.’ By Helen Beringen Read the full Story of the Week and other stories like it in The Lutheran. 11 editions/year. Only $45 (Aust), $47 (NZ). St Petri Stuff When you arrive at Church on Sunday - QR Codes and signing in process We have a QR code displayed at both entrances to the church and would appreciate it if you have the mySA GOV app on your phone and scan this when you enter. You could ask you grandchildren to put the app on your phone, but your phone does need to have data on it to work, or we can give you the free wi-fi code for your phone. If you don’t have that sort of phone, or are unable to scan for another reason, that is fine and we will just write you down or tick you off the list. Children do not need to scan or be written down if they are attending with their parents. Our counters will be keeping numbers so that we don’t go over the limit and if you have to leave the building before the service starts and then re-enter, please let the usher who is counting know that you are coming back and come back in that same door. Our Covid Marshal will oversee that we don’t go over numbers and that other COVID compliances are in place and that we are following our COVID Safe Plan. No one needs to register to attend worship, but we do have a limit of 183 people in our church building (including upstairs). Re-development Plan St Petri Church You can pick up a copy of the revised Re-development plan from the office, or have one emailed to you. LLL Calendars Still a few copies left of the 2021 calendar. Mike Kurtz has the skills to turn wood into candle holders and Leanne Schiller beautifully wood burns the name of the one being baptised onto the holder. This wood is not so easy to source at the moment and it needs time to season before it can be used. If you happen to know of or have an ash tree which you are planning to cut down or know where we could obtain some of this wood we would love to hear from you. Either speak to Mike, Leanne or the office. Thank you. Bill Woods Computer Class Have you got questions about your computer, ipad or phone? Do you need help with putting on the QR ap? In Touch The last few years of dwelling in God’s Word (Particularly Luke 10 and John 20) and this experience of COVID restrictions have convinced myself and others that God’s mission is more about us as a church going to people where they live and move more than them coming to us on our terms where we live and move. Our belief is that the Spirit is at work in each person in our community and He invites us to participate with him in sharing the gospel in words and loving deeds with friends, family and strangers. Whether it is one-on-one, friend to friend conversation, sharing our faith and praying, in all the places our people live and move, or it is in smaller group settings in homes or workplaces or elsewhere, or at programs we run, large or small, listening to neighbours and strangers, sharing the hope we have in Jesus and backing that up with practical love is how the gospel of Jesus best takes root in people’s lives. I think that means that there will be generally less activities and programs on our church campus and less infrastructure to support these kind of things because we won’t need so many activities on our ‘turf. We will be engaged in caring conversations, sharing our faith, serving others in smaller setting or one-on-one with people in their homes, in our town, at work or in our homes. Of course, there is a time to do some activities on our church campus. We are in a unique position of being able to gather people in various ways for various purpose on our church campus because of where it is and what our campus is known for in our region - care. We are the care service hub of the Barossa in many ways. All kinds of people are on our campus every day of the week. We don’t have to ‘go’ that far to strike up a conversation with a local non-church friend or stranger! And yet, there are so many other places we can be and share the hope we have in Jesus. There is always the crucial and central gathering in the presence of Jesus to receive his grace in word and sacrament. Indeed, we would like to further develop our church building for purposes of worship and for more use by more people so more relationships can form, and the gospel be shared more. I think the Holy Spirit is calling us to ‘open up’ and ‘spread out’ together and go to people where they live and move, as he called Paul and the Apostle’s and the early church to do in their time. Our challenge is to do this in a prayerful, organised, responsible and sustainable way. That means listening to the Spirit, to each other and to our community. It means saying no to some good ideas, bringing some ministries to a close and focussing on others, It means taking some risks because you don’t grow in faith before you go, but only AS you go. That is where our mission is going. Pastor Adrian
