INTERESTING TIMES Interesting and unprecedented are just two of the words used to describe 2020. There is a saying that it is better to be a dog in times of tranquillity than a human being in times of chaos. Hmm! Each of us will have experienced different emotions during and since lock-down, but all have felt the loss of human contact and social activities, and lack of access to churches for private prayer and corporate worship. Thank God for modern communications that have enabled us to keep in touch with loved ones in these times. We have given and received much needed support. Continued restrictions are still necessary for our safety and well-being. Yes, we live in interesting and unprecedented times. One carol says, ‘The hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight’. We have had to face our fears and work through issues. Our hope is in Christ. He is our strength. He is unchanging. My garden reminds me that the times and seasons are changing – nothing is the same as it was. Plants which flowered once a year now flower two or three times. We fret and worry, but the world of nature carries on around us unperturbed. In the Gospels we‘re told not to worry about everyday needs - God cares even for insignificant sparrows. Are we not more valuable than them? If God cares for the least, then how much more he cares for us and will provide for our needs whatever they might be. Pat Harris LLM
Reverend Foster presided at a Holy Communion service at Tarrant Hinton on 6th September. This was his last service whilst still resident at Tarrant Hinton Rectory. As well as parishioners from Tarrant Hinton, other parishes were represented. After the service Michael and Amanda were formally bid farewell with the presentation of small gifts. They were also told about the collections which had been taken up in the Chase Benefice as a token of thanks for Michael’s ministry amongst us during these last 20 years. In these Covid times, the money was transferred online to their bank account! Michael and Amanda left The Rectory for Colehill on 10 th September, to a property that requires some attention. This is the type of challenge, I think, that Michael and Amanda will embrace with enthusiasm. Our best wishes go with them, as they work to turn the property into their home. Gill Baverstock, Chase Administrator
VILLAGE NEWS CHETTLE News gatherer Rosamond Sweet-Escott rosamond.sweetescott@gmail.com 07786 920991. A huge THANKS to everybody who was able to come to our open garden and tea party on 5 September. We are absolutely delighted to announce that £436 was sent to help a Lebanese organisation which is feeding the huge number of people left without kitchens in Beirut as well as sending £200 to the Sudan link organised by Salisbury Diocese. Tom and Rosamond Sweet-Escott The Ride and Stride once again set off from Chettle House with 8 riders this year. They were offered bacon rolls before signing in at the Church and then at lunch they were treated to a scrumptious lunch provided by June Head and Rachel Skeats at the disused airfield in Tarrant Rushton. Thanks to the Chettle churchwardens for supporting the opening of the Church for this annual bike ride. 4th October is the HARVEST FESTIVAL at 6pm in Chettle Church. This will follow on from the annual APPLE DAY celebration in the village hall field which as an organised event will follow the social distancing rules applicable on the day. Please see posters around the village. Chettle shop continues to be offering a highly valued service to the people surrounding Chettle and all are extremely welcome. FARNHAM News gatherer Mrs Gill Baverstock gill.baverstock@hotmail.co.uk 01725 516311 The Harvest Festival Service will be held in church on Sunday 4th October at 10.30am. If you wish to bring something to the service as a harvest offering, then please bring tinned, long-life and dried food products. These items will be taken to the Blandford Food Bank to support those who struggle to buy food. Appreciating that things are financially difficult for even more families and individuals during the Coronavirus, the PCC sent a donation of £250 to the Food Bank back in April and the collection taken after the Harvest Service will also go to the Food Bank.
The Annual Parochial Church meeting is to be held in church on Friday 9th October at 7pm. Although a long time ago, we will be reviewing church activity during 2019 and electing churchwardens and PCC members. This will be a socially distanced meeting and all parishioners are welcome to attend. We have bid farewell to David and Vicky Hope Robertson from number 67 and wish them well in their new home in Ferndown. Due to the move, David has relinquished his role as church treasurer and we thank him for his careful stewardship of the accounts since October 2018. Our thanks to Roger Newenham who has kindly agreed to be the Farnham PCC Treasurer. Coronavirus has impacted upon the church service schedule across the Chase Benefice. Currently each church is holding one service a month, so it is necessary to be creative about how we make the most of each of these services. When the PCC met recently it was agreed that we would forgo bidding to hold an extra service for Remembrance Sunday, but would, instead, remember all those who have died, including those who lost their lives as a consequence of war, at our usual first Sunday service, which will to be held on 1st November: All Saints Day. There will be an opportunity to attend a service at Tollard Royal on Remembrance Sunday. 50 Club. Whilst it was agreed that a new year of the 50 Club would start in September, I have yet to chase a few people to renew their subscriptions. However, I promise that the first draw will be drawn in September and thereafter in the earlier part of each month. There are still numbers available for purchase, so please contact me if you would like to join. It’s £48 a year, with either annual or half-yearly payments. Monthly payments can be accept- ed by standing order. Gill Baverstock 01725 516311 Farnham church, like many charities, has been hit financially because Coronavirus has wiped out opportunities to fundraise. Our last PCC meeting was held via Zoom and we decided that we would plan with hope and schedule the Christmas Fair to be held in church on Saturday 5th December. Farnham PCC feels that any fundraising should also be an opportunity for people to meet together socially but, as the number of Covid-19 cases rises again, with stricter regulation about getting together, we may need to have a rethink and develop more creative ways of fundraising. If anyone has any ideas about this, please get in touch with either of the churchwardens. Farnham Parochial Church Council Sadly Roy Bartlett and Sara-Jane Newenham have resigned from the Parish Council. We are indebted to them both for their dedication & hard work. They will be missed. We are delighted that Peter Forbes has agreed to be our acting Parish Clerk. If anyone is interested in joining us on the Council and would like to know more about what the job entails please speak to any of your councillors. Your village needs you!
The work on the Toddler Multiplay in the Playground is finished - and very smart it looks too. A big thank you to Roy Bartlett and Ed Sadd who did all the work. They have done an amazing job and saved us a lot of money; community spirit at its best. A new church notice board has been installed in the porch, providing more space to post the various notices. We are grateful to Maidment & Carter for providing some of the materials and to Graham Keeble for not only providing materials but also constructing the new board and putting it in place. TOLLARD ROYAL News gatherer Alexandra Thomas Rhodri.Alex@btinternet.com 01725 516320 September 13th We held our first service since lockdown and it was wonderful to be able to gather and worship together. Thanks to all concerned who came and contributed to making it a worthwhile occasion. Harvest Festival 11th October at present it is still uncertain what the format will be, but we hope that something special will happen to celebrate this important festival in the church calendar. Ride and Stride: Jasper Humphreys and Jackie C-C tackled the ride and managed 20 miles and 7 churches, with a lot of fun and chatter involved. John C-C is doing his ride on we/end 19th/20th and he will cover a much greater distance! Thank so much to all those who supported the three of us and the final result will be in next month. APCM (Annual Parochial Church Meeting) is taking place on 6th October at 7.00pm in the Church to which all are welcome. Covid regulations may change covering this but it is hoped that it will be an actual meeting not on Zoom. 52 club winners: 1st prize - Pat Lamb. 2nd prize - Richard Shirley. Please remember to renew your subscription for the 52 club if you are not on a rolling standing order??!! It is due in September please. We would like to extend a big welcome to Keenan, Julia & Emily who have recently moved into Snowdrop Cottage and we hope they will be very happy there.
GUSSAGE SAINT MICHAEL News gatherer Mr Stephen Mills stevemillsdorset@hotmail.com 01725 552454 Our Church is now open for private prayer on Wednesday & Sunday from 10am-4pm Village Website www.gussagesaintmichael.co.uk checkout the website to see what's going on in your village GUSSAGE ALL SAINTS News gatherer Pauline Dilliway paulineadilliway@gmail.com 01258 840274 Welcome to Richard and Jane Loader and their dogs who have come to live at North Cottage . We wish them well as they settle into life in our lovely part of the world. On Sunday August 23rd we held our first church service following the Covid – 19 precautions. We were delighted to welcome worshippers from around the Benefice as well as our locals. The service was led by Canon Simon Tong and with Rev Robert Prance playing the organ and Chris King singing a solo of The Lord's My Shepherd . The service was Zoomed to those at home not able to attend. Grateful thanks go to those who set up the technology. It was a success. Comments were made about how good it was to get together again and meeting socially distanced after wards in the church yard required some discipline ! Harvest Festival is planned for Sunday 27th September jointly with Gussage St Michael . We intend this to take place in church. Further details to follow. October Church Services. Please see the included rota. We will update by email or word of mouth according to restrictions.
New bench seat in the churchyard. Grateful thanks to the family and friends of John Ware who have gifted a bench seat in the church yard in memory of him. John loved the village and over many years was often seen riding through on Barney or Wally. The seat overlooking the valley will give a place for all who need to sit and rest and contemplate. Ride and Stride for DHCT. Teams from Gussage All Saints started out at 9 o'clock and covered a good many miles and visited a good many churches on a glorious September day. They have reported back on the great camaraderie of the day and the fun had and something about lunch in a pub and cakes at a church!! The church was manned for part of the day and was visited by groups from other churches and this time for the first time in many years by a pony and rider- well done Tammy and Hippo. The amounts raised will be published next month.
