Pastor’s Corner Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity 30 May 2021 The Most Holy Trinity – God Almighty – God Eternal - Absolute Unity – Absolute Truth – Absolute Love – Absolute Wisdom – Three Divine Persons in One God (Triune God). The doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity is a central doctrine of Christianity. It is a cen- tral mystery of the Christian faith. We, as Christians, worship a Triune God: Three Divine Persons in One God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the Loose-Leaf Lectionary for Mass, we read: “What is there to learn from the Trinity? Why does it matter that we believe in a Triune God rather than a [monotheistic God like the God of the Jewish people]? Is it just an abstract theological truth that we are told to believe in? Does it have any bearing in our lives? It’s important to know that nothing the Church teaches is meant to merely be an abstract theological truth meant to make the faith more complicated. Each teaching, each mystery of the Church is meant to illumi- nate a truth about our own lives. Because we are made in the image and likeness of God, everything that gives us a better understanding of God also gives us a better understanding of ourselves. Entering deeper into the mystery of a Trinitarian God is meant to impact and change all that we think and do as members of God’s Church. If we understand who God is, then we will respond with love and become more like God, for God is love.” [1] The Loose-Leaf Lectionary for Mass continues to state: “What we see in the Trinity are three distinct [Divine Persons] in one God. Just like in marriage, when two become one flesh, each distinct person in the Trinity is so intimately united in love with the others that they [are One]. Each {Divine Person] loves so perfectly that they give of themselves completely to the other while also receiving the love of the other completely. In the Trinity, we have the perfect manifestation of love. This love is so intense and so great that the love cannot be merely con- tained between the Members of the Trinity. This love boils up and swells from the Trinity and overflows and bursts forth into creation.” [2] The love that God the Father has for God the Son, and the love that God the Son has for God the Father is so strong and so self-giving, so self-emptying, that the Holy Spirit [who proceeds from both the Father and the Son] bursts forth into all of creation [along with the Father and the Son]. Where you have one Divine Person of the Most Holy Trinity you have the other two Divine Persons. Why? Remember that the Triune God is One in total and absolute unity. Three Divine and distinct Persons in One God. That is why the doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity is a mystery – we will never come to fully understand this central doctrine of the Christian faith with our limited human intellect. Only in heaven can this type of understanding be given to us by God Himself once, God willing, we are blessed to be saints among the saints in the halls of heaven. My dear brothers and sister in Christ, as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, may we, as true disciples of Jesus Christ, strive more and more each day of our lives to emulate the love that exists within and between the Divine Persons of the Most Holy Trinity. In that way, our light will shine in this sometimes dark and wicked world for others to see, causing them to give glory, honor and praise to our Triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And all the world will clearly see that we are indeed Christians by the love that we have for each other and for all the people of the world who are all part of God’s creation! May we all be truly one as the Most Holy Trinity is One in perfect unity! This is the way that God intended for us to be - unity! Prayerfully, Fr. Ben [1] Loose-Leaf Lectionary for Mass, Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN, 2021, Pgs. 11h-12h [2] Loose-Leaf Lectionary for Mass, Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN, 2021, Pgs. 11h-12h
“Itwas not you who chose me, but I who chose you and ap- pointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.” John 15:16 Congratulations Reverend Joseph Anthony Aquila Mactal (Fr. Joey) on your Ordination Saturday, May 29 and your First Mass of Thanksgiving, Sunday, May 30, 2021. It has been our pleasure and our privilege to watch you go from a Seminarian, a Deacon, to a Priest. We know you will do great things We offer you and your newly ordained brother priests this prayer. O Jesus, our great High Priest, hear our humble prayers on behalf of Joseph Mactal and his brother priests. Give them deep faith, a bright and firm hope and a burning love which will ever increase in the course of their priestly life. In their loneliness, com- fort them. In their sorrows, strengthen them. In their frustrations, point out to them that they are needed by the Church; they are needed by souls; they are needed for the work of redemption. O Loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests, take to your heart your sons who are close to you because of their priestly ordination and because of the power which they have received to carry on the work of Christ in a world which needs them so much. Be their comfort, be their joy, and be their strength. Amen. WE NEED YOUR HELP! St John Vianney is in desperate need of counters for the collec- tions. BOOK OF MEMORY Have you wondered how you can honor that special person, or honor the memory of a loved one? A permanent memorial in lieu of flowers in a funeral home? The Saint Thomas the Apostle Memorial Fund provides a perpetual remembrance of the one you honor, living or deceased. The Saint Thomas the Apostle Memorial Fund is a wonderful alternative to floral arrangements at funeral homes, gifts for a 50t Anniversary, senior birthday parties, when the request is: “Please no gifts” or for the person who has everything; flowers last but a few days – and an endowment lasts forever. Contributions (we ask for a minimum donation of $100.00) to this program are placed in an endowment fund. therefore, your “living” gift honors your loved ones forever. The endowment fund is for the specific purpose of the maintenance of the Saint Thomas the Apostle Church and Cemetery. The Memorial Fund began in 1981. You can go online or complete the form below and with your donation drop them in “The Box” in the vestibule or mail it to the parish office. Acknowledgement cards will be sent to announce your gift (no dollar amount is indicated.) Your name, and the names of those you have enrolled, will be recorded in the leather bound Book of Memory in the Saint Thomas the Apostle Blessed Sacrament Chapel under the Icon of Christ in Majesty, directly across from the Tabernacle, where all who enter are reminded to pray for those in the Book of Memory and our benefactors. The enrolled and you will be remembered in prayers of the Community of Saint Thomas the Apostle at Masses on the Feast of All Souls, and all Sundays in November. A special Mass will be offered in the parish cemetery on Memorial Day. (The names will be listed in the Memorial Day Mass Program and the 1st weekend of November’s bulletin) If you should have any questions about the Memorial Fund contact the Parish Office by email: terry@ststhomasjohn.org or during office hours (9:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m.) 973-208-0090.
