Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 For 29 years women have been gathering on this island for a weekend getaway. Women’s Wellness is a unique experience in which every woman can participate, no matter her preference. Some women find rejuvenation zip lining high up through the trees, while others prefer the solitude of an early morning meditation. This island encourages you to have fun while wandering where the wifi connection is weak, to make a new friend, and to leave with plenty of memories. WELCOME TO BEAUTIFUL JOHN ISLAND CAMP! Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 What to Bring Sleeping Activities and Services Warm sleeping bag and pillow Spa Services: large towel, blanket or Single mattress cover sheet for bed exercise mat, extra towels and sheets (optional) for aesthetic services (see page 8) Activities: yoga mat, comfortable Clothing clothes for exercise (stretchy pants/ Pyjamas active wear), Socks and underwear life jacket (if you own one), sturdy Pants and long-sleeved shirt exercise shoes or hikers T-shirts for one weekend and pair of Extra money and cheques (for spa shorts services, crafts workshops, and silent Warm sweater/jacket auction) Sunglasses Bug Shirt (have this readily available in Toiletries your hand luggage for use at the dock Fri- Please ensure they are biodegradable day evening) Sun screen and insect repellant Rain Gear Ear plugs for sleeping in cabin Swim Suit and towel Towel Sun hat Any required medications Sturdy closed-toe shoes (sandals optional) Other: flashlight, batteries, water bottle, collapsible camping chair, camera, binoculars Parking If you are planning on bringing your own vehicle to camp, there is a new parking arrangement that has been put into place. Due to the size of the parking lot at the end of Walkhouse Bay Road, all cars must be parked in the Mitchell’s lot, located beside the Spanish River Resort and Campground. It is suggested that you drop off your belongings (and fellow passengers) at the docks and then drive to the parking lot. Once at the parking lot, there will be staff that directing you where to park. Cars will be boxed in quite tightly, so access to them throughout the weekend will not be feasible. Staff will be shuttling back and forth to bring you back to the docks. Please be aware that this will take a bit of time depending on how many people are driving. There will be a fee of $25.00 that must be paid in cash for this service. Page 7
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 Saturday Night Theme Party Mad Hatter Tea Party! Follow us down the rabbit hole for a party that is sure to be remembered. Come dressed as your favorite Wonderland character or get creative and invent your own. We’re all mad here anyways. The sillier the better! Saturday Night Entertainment Naked Soul Naked soul is an acoustic duo of husband and wife, Brian and Deanna Belaire. Their shared love for music and passion for entertainment has taken them on an amazing journey. Performing everything from Janis Joplin to Adele, their raw sound and soulful style will be sure to captivate your musical soul. Deanna can easily be compared to the raspy likes of Melissa Etheridge and Stevie Nicks while Brian plays guitar and accompanies with harmonies. It is sure to be a great night!
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 Hike toward Lost Lake - Unlimited For those who enjoy a challenge, hiking the rugged, varied terrain of the island’s interior will reward you as you search for a “lost lake” at its summit. There is no guarantee that you will actually find the lake but you will enjoy the hike. Please wear hiking boots or sturdy footwear and bring a water bottle. This strenuous hike will take 4 hours. Participants must stay with the group at all times. Campfire - Unlimited Fingers crossed that Gitche Manitou keeps the skies clear and the stars bright for our Friday night welcoming campfire. Join us in song as we revisit some of your favourite campfire songs! Free Paddle Guidelines Participants may go for a leisurely paddle in a canoe or kayak at any time during daylight hours. A check in/out system will be used to ensure everyone’s safety.
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 Guided Paddle - Maximum 11 John Island staff will lead you on a leisurely paddle exploring the beautiful shoreline around John Island. This guided paddle is best for those who are already relatively comfortable in a canoe or kayak. Archery Instruction - Maximum 12 John Island Camp staff will teach you the basic steps needed to aim at and hit a target. Channel your inner Katniss Everdeen and hit the mark! Sailing - Maximum 12 Sailing is not only fun, but also adventurous! John Island Staff will take participants out for an exciting sail around the bay in front of Front Beach. This activity is weather permitting as our waterfront can experience drastic conditions.
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 High Ropes and Challenge Course Elements The John Island High Ropes and Challenge Course elements are a series of program areas that provide excitement and adventure up high amongst the trees. John Island’s highly trained staff ensure your safety and supervision in all activities. Climbing Wall - Maximum 24 Our 40 foot high climbing wall has been designed to allow beginners and experts alike to be positively challenged while enjoying a vertical ascent.
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 Zip Line - Maximum 12 Suspended 60 feet above ground, our zip line is 400 feet long. Put on a harness, tie yourself in, climb up a tree, and jump right off! This is definitely for those who enjoy the thrill of it all! Vertical Playground- Maximum 24 Starting at ground level, participants will guide their way through a series of ropes, ladders and rubber tires while climbing up 40 ft. Vertical Playground is a great individual or team work effort that is fun and stimulating! Challenge course elements are team activities! Celebrate and support each others strength and courage throughout the course elements. Please ensure that you are able to participate for the full length of the activity block and cheer each other on.
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 Story Weaving: Indigenous Ojibway Storytelling - Unlimited Pay what you can: $2 -$4 Participants as a group will be engaged in weaving a large dream-catcher while contributing to a story weaving activity. During the activity some Indigenous traditional teachings will be shared. Facilitated by Will Morin Will Morin is an educator, artist and cultural consultant. He is of Ojibway, Scottish, and French Canadian ancestry. A member of the Michipicoten First Nation. Will lives and works in Northern Ontario with his wife Robin and their 4 children. Working on his PhD, Will has taught Indigenous Studies at the University of Sudbury, Laurentian University for nearly 20 years. As an award winning visual and performing artist Will obtained a B.F.A. from NSCAD in Halifax and a B.A. in Native Studies B. Ed (Aboriginal Teachers Certification Program) from Nipissing University and a Masters (M.A.) in Humanities from Laurentian University.
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 Morning Yoga with Kayla Ann - Unlimited Move, breathe, connect. Start your mornings off with a gentle yoga flow that is perfect for everybody. Creative Woodworking: Robin Nesting Shelves - Maximum 6 Cost for materials is $10 With a robin nesting shelf in your yard you are not only contributing to wildlife habitat enhancement, but you will have a front row seat to observe how a pair of robins build a nest and raise their young. No special skills are needed for this workshop! Cake Decorating with Reta Donald - Maximum 15 Cost for materials is $25 Have a sweet time decorating cake’s like a professional. In this workshop participants will learn how to make flowers, figurines and trims using a buttercream icing. You will receive a professional kit of tool s to take home so you can show off your cake decorating skills right away!
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 2018 Thriving through Change - Maximum 12 We all experience events in our life that can throw us off balance. Whether it’s the end of a relationship, loss of a loved one, a traumatic event, career change, burn out relation ship conflict, health challenge, or financial setbacks—these situations often leave us in emotional overwhelm. Would you like to experience a mind body tune up to help you navigate through challenging times with courage and compassion? In this workshop you will have the opportunity to experience fun and easy ways to help you be calm in the eye of the storm. Facilitated by Nancy Rose Nancy Rose is a mother, wife, Registered Dental Hygienist, and educator. In 2016 Nancy became a certified Master coach and Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming with the American Board of NLP and a Master Hypnotist with the American Boar of Hypnotherapy. Indigenous Peoples: Q & A - Unlimited Cost for materials is $5 Additional Indigenous Resource Manual available for $20 Participants will sit and visit in a safe and respectful sharing circle asking general and basic questions about Indigenous peoples. Facilitated by Will Morin
Women’s Wellness Weekend 2019 Dream Catcher Making - Unlimited Cost for materials is $15 Participants will learn how to weave a dream catcher. Traditional teachings will be provided of the cultural and universal significance of this Indigenous craft. Note: Come with something personal to add to the dream catcher (a button, ear ring, piece of ribbon, small stone - something that has meaning to you). Facilitated by Will Morin Birding with Marlies and Dieter - Unlimited You will be able to see a variety of birds in different habitats, enjoy a quiet morning watching them and learning more about their lives. Please bring binoculars if you have them. Marlies and Dieter Schoenefeld are naturalists and have brought these popular guided tours to Women’s Wellness Weekend for many years!
