CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL NELSON SUNDAY BULLETIN + 16th December 2018 – 3rd Sunday in Advent WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you. Dear Cathedralites & visitors Welcome to our Cathedral today. While we look at the amazing vigour and dramatic message of John the Baptist in our morning services, tonight we witness the poignancy of our Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols Service. My thanks to all who are involved. Our special x-factor tonight will be the dance and movement orchestrated by Cathedralite Lesley Bandy. We also welcome Nelson City Brass with their conductor Nigel Weeks, and a special welcome to Jane van Tilborg who used to be an organist at the Cathedral a few years ago before moving overseas. We are having a wonderful slap up Festive supper, thanks to Kay and Nicky Calder & team. This afternoon I’ll be helping with the Commemoration Day Service regarding HMS Neptune, with the wreath laying and ode. This ship sank on 19 December 1941 with 700 casualties, 150 from the Royal New Zealand Navy and 4 from Nelson. I am particularly thrilled at the way our Christmas decorations are being sold. As you know these are hand crafted by Jiries and his family who hail from Bethlehem, where their family business still exists in Manger Square. Jiries and his wife Marcelle left Bethlehem with heavy hearts years ago because of the tension. They now ply their trade in Auckland. Last week Patsy and I visited them at their workshop. They are thrilled to be receiving help from Nelson Cathedral by way of us selling their amazing hand- crafted gifts. Because they are so superb, they are easy to sell. In the next two weeks we will have many people through the Cathedral and so I am asking for 4 volunteers who will take charge of selling these Christmas decoration throughout that time. This will help Bev Greig, our co-ordinator of our Christmas Tree Festival. Please contact her (0272 466 3840) or me (021 711 726) if you’d like your chance of being a “shop keeper”. Congratulations to our Choir Director Melanie Carruthers, who graduates with a Social Work Degree this Tuesday. She has done it the hard way, doing it a little bit later in life with a growing family. Well done Melanie! I am delighted that one of our Council Members from our congregation, at 8 o’ clock adherence Geoff Lawes, with his finance company FICO has donated a defibrillator for the Cathedral. Geoff was once responsible for saving a person’s life doing mouth to mouth, and since then has been a great advocate for the provision of defibrillators. Thank you so much Geoff.
On Thursday I went and sang carols at the final Loaves & Fishes event of the year. Congratulations to Alison and her team, some of whom have links with this Cathedral as they provide food for the lonely, the lost, the least. They love us coming to provide moral support. Please join me any time. The tragedy of the murder of Grace Millane brings home the level of violence that exists in New Zealand society. What an indictment it is to us as a nation. It was therefore wonderful to see the various vigils throughout New Zealand. It is a sobering event just before Christmas. It was wonderful to see Grace’s dad David paying tribute to the care they have received subsequently. I look forward to meeting up with Rev Dawn Daunauda who is returning from a year away in Vanuatu. It will also be a joy to take the Christmas service at the Wood this Friday morning. Don’t forget we have Choral Evensong next Sunday at 5.30pm. I look forward to seeing you invite a whole lot of friends and family to our Christmas services. Have a great week. In His service, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CAROLS ON THE Mike STEPS ON CHRISTMAS EVE We are looking for volunteers to assist with selling candles and handing out carol sheets. If you are able to help, there will be a briefing after the 10am service next Sunday 23rd December. Please give names to Rev Steve Jordan or text him on 021 294 6105.
