JANUARY 24, 2021 Human Work: Our Gift to God Dear Friends, Pope St. John Paul II left us significant theological thinking on the dignity of work. More often than not in our technological society, work is often viewed as that activity divorced from God. As exciting, and even as helpful as technology can be for the modern mind, our involvement with it is no guarantee to personal fulfillment. The human person can still become bored even with the best of technology we have before us. It is not what we have before us that impels us to good work but rather the why which directs how we approach our responsibilities. To commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s landmark encyclical Rerum Novariem (1891), Pope St. John Paul II gave the Church the encyclical Laborem Exercens (On Human Work). God created us and taught us to seek true joy in this life as a prelude to the eternal joy of the kingdom. How can our work enable us to find joy? The encyclical of Pope John Paul II gives us three ways: Our work is a participation in the work of God’s creation. The human person, through work, imitates God. Work is a vocation to which we have been called. Work is a participation with God, an invitation of God, and a calling from God. This is a unique and helpful way which combines theological thought and social teaching. It is a reflection which can lift our spirit whether our work is in the home or outside the home. Each of us must work. How we approach it, with mind and heart, can make all the difference in the world if we desire to capture joy and the fulfillment it brings. See yourself as a participant in God’s work. He made us as the summit of His creation. Body and soul, He made us. We offer Him the work of our hands. What more beautiful an exchange than the effort of our lives to acknowledge the external destiny that the Creator has marked for us! Of course it demands effort, even sweat and tears, at times. Our lives are a participation in the life of God who shared His divine love for us by creating us, redeeming us, and leading us through the Church to the kingdom of heaven. The way we enter into our work, the way we perform it, and the responsibility we can render in helping others are all ways we acknowledge God’s love and respond to it. We only need to observe God’s creation to realize that it must have taken time and thought to complete the work well. This is reflected in the order of creation. The Book of Genesis says: “God saw all He had made, and indeed, it was very good” (Gen 1.31). Our work needs diligence, attention, and creativity so that with time and a little effort, we will return glory to God, ever cognizant that God’s grace will help us. See through your work how you can imitate God. Pope St. John Paul II points out that work is not only about making, but also about becoming. Yes, we must work to make our living. There is great dignity to work when we realize our dignity as human persons. Our work should provide for ourselves, and for the opportunity to remember charitable giving. We should remember that our work teaches us about becoming more. How well have we utilized the gifts and abilities God has given us? Do we develop them? Do we allow them to grow and flourish? Hopefully, we will use our talents and allow them to increase our lives. This is the beauty of the human person and the becoming, which needs our attention. The Parable of the Buried Talent (Lk. 19.11-26) is a condemnation of those who do not try. We must make an effort and return to God for what, in the first instance, was a gift. See that the great lesson of work is not necessarily in making more but in becoming more. See through your work a calling from God. Work is a vocation. It is not drudgery which points to a fast end. It is a vocation which, through freedom, allows us to give our best. We offer our lives in communion with Christ, who completed His work on earth in sacrificial love. In our toil and suffering we find in Christ a model of faithful love who will assist and inspire us in our vocation. In fact, with Mary and Joseph and all the saints, we capture their fidelity to God’s Plan and our inspiration how to live it by our work. May our joy be found in the dignity of the work we do as we participate in God’s work of creation, imitating Him, and following His calling. May we be encouraged to do our work so that it will reflect goodness and love. Father Michael Lawlor Pastor

JANUARY 24, 2021 SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA This week’s second collection supports the Church in Latin America (CLA). The CLA provides support for pastoral projects in financially poorer dioceses in Latin America and the Caribbean. CLA funds catechetical and lay leadership programs, youth ministry, evangelization programs, and formation programs for religious, priests, and deacons. CLA is making it possible for the Catholic faithful in the Western hemisphere to help each other. Teaching: St. John Newman helps us to understand the wonder of the Holy Eucharist. He turns us to the Gospel story of the multiplication of the loaves and fish which fed the five thousand. This is a miracle and one of many which our Lord performed. This narrative helps us to see the miracle which takes place at Mass where the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. This sacrament was instituted by Christ at the Last Supper. “Do this in memory of Me.” Prayer: We are so privileged to receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. May our faith be deepened as we partake worthily in this great sacrament. May through prayer and reflection we participate with great wonder and awe what Jesus does for us. He comes to strengthen us in life so he may stay close to us. He then pledges to us a promise to eternal life. Fr. Michael Lawlor Year of the Eucharist • Corpus Christi 2020 to Corpus Christi 2022 A General Blessing of Throats will take place at the end of all Masses, January 29/31. St. Blaise is given special recognition not only with a feast day on February 3, but with a unique ceremony that parallels the practice of anointing the sick. In this case, it is a blessing of the throats for those with throat disorders and for anyone who wishes a blessing to prevent a malady or disease of to the throat. St. Blaise’s protection of those with throat troubles apparently comes from a legend that a boy was brought to him who had a fish bone stuck in his throat. The boy was about to die when St. Blaise healed him.
