Church Council Meeting Highlights The Regular Meeting of the St. Philip Lutheran Church Council was held on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, via combination in-person and Zoom meeting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The in-person group met in the Conference Room. Call to Order: The Meeting was called to order at 6:03 p.m. by Council President, Don Letourneau. A quorum was present to conduct business. Finance Reports: Reports were presented by Linda Albert for information purposes only and were accepted as presented. Committee Reports: Property report submitted by Dave Ramsey. Highlighted: (i) hooking irrigation system up to City Water. Benjamin Franklin would charge $3,500; Hunter Plumbing, $2,100. (ii) There is a surcharge of $1,800 to install an extra meter for water used for irrigation. (iii) We estimate that irrigation using City Water may cost $200-250 per month for 8 water- ings per month. (iv) The Irrigation system needs to be checked out. There are also rain sensors that can be purchased to shut off the system if there is rain. (v) The sidewalks and building need to be pressure washed. (vi) Maybe we should overseed the yard. (vii) The question was asked about adding a water softener to our well system to take care of the rust color. Dave said that would be his next assignment. One estimate in the amount of $31,500 received for repaving the existing asphalt parking lot. Working on obtaining additional estimates. In the Nursery, both heating/AC units are not working. The cost to replace the two units will be $1,200 for each of the two units in the Nursery. Property Committee has recommended that they be replaced. A motion was made by Don Letourneau and seconded by Marie Johnson to replace the units in the Nursery. Motion carried unanimously. We are waiting for an estimate on the cost of repainting the doors in the hall way: 26 single doors and 2 double doors. Playground needs sand or rubberized mulch. Cost could be as much as $40,000 to $60,000. Jenn suggested putting playground mulch around climbing areas. There is a requirement of 6 inches of sand/mulch in those areas. The tall swings have been grandfathered in and the mulch area required for them is large. They are very high and require a lot of space for mulch or sand. There is a business at the corner of Hwy 544 & 707 which has playground mulch and sand. The suggestion was made to take up the barriers which held the sand in place in the past and use equipment to redistribute and spread the sand in the playground. Mission and Outreach: On August 22 we will have donations for Help 4 Kids which will be matched by our Benevo- lence Fund. We are very thankful for the response that our congregation gave for Christmas in July, which is now $2922 plus another $50 that has come in in August. Staff Reports: Preschool: Report submitted by Jenn Loeswick. August 23 will be first day back. Enrollment: 4s class, 11; 2s class, 11 on different days of the week (MWF, Tu, Th); 3s class, 7. Children will arrive on September 1. A helper is needed in 2s class on Mondays. Orientation on September 1 will occur at two different block times for parents and children to come in. Music and Worship: Report submitted by Arthur Ghere. Highlighted: (i) appreciation for volunteers; (ii) Chancel Choir and Bell Choir started rehearsing today with singing/playing in September; and (iii) August 1, we had three trumpet players for worship. September 12 will be celebration of 65th anniversary of St. Philip Lutheran Church. Andy Graham, owner of Snak Shak, will cater the meal for $1,000. Food, plates, etc. First responders will be invited. Post cards will be mailed to congregation. Plans are being made for eating inside and outside. Pastor’s Report for August, 2021: Highlighted:(i) taping of pews and encouragement of wearing masks to worship; (ii) September 12—celebration of 65th anniversary and new members. Sign should be here middle of September. Items for Discussion/Approval: COVID Policies and Procedures: Pastor Jason briefly discussed reactions to relaxed COVID policies and the probability of changing our signs from “Masks Optional for Vaccinated” to “Masks Encouraged” on the entrance doors since the Covid threat still exists. New Sign: Pastor Jason said that the sign should be ready about the middle of September. We have received over $1,000 more toward the cost of the sign since we paid the first installment. Cut back on Meet and Greet to one Sunday a month. Circle meetings will need to meet in the Fellowship Hall instead of the Conference Room. The Men’s Breakfast meetings will be postponed until the Covid reports indicate more safety in meeting in groups. Dismissal: There being no further business to discuss, motion was made by Jackie Orcutt and seconded by Dave Witmer to adjourn meeting at 7:27 p.m. Motion passed unanimously. The next Regular Meeting of the Council is scheduled for Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. Submitted by Linda Albert, filling in for Gail Kane
St. Philip Preschool - Jenn Loeswick, Preschool Director We welcomed our teachers back on August 23 and we’ve been working to get everything ready for a bright new year! Orientation for our families is on Wednesday, September 1st, at 9:00 & 10:30 a.m., followed by our first days of Preschool on Thursday and Friday, September 2nd and 3rd. Our classrooms are all going to be garden themed this year, and we are so pleased to have a mural painted by Julianne Scott in our hallway. If anyone has any building skills or extra wood lying around, we would love to build a garden in a corner of the playground. It would be a great opportunity for hands on learning for the children! We are so excited to have our little friends back at preschool! Below are pictures of our teachers for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year at St. Philip! All proceeds will go towards funding for our new sign. More information to come! Travel with Friends, Observe a Renowned Passion Play, and Make Some Wonderful Memories! A group tour, hosted by Pastor Beth Neubauer and her husband in September, 2022, will have you both visit highlighted cities of Italy, Germany, and Switzerland, and attend the world famous Passion Play presented every ten years by the villagers of Oberammergau, Germany (COVID postponed this decade's production from 2020 to 2022). The trip features an amazing itinerary and the price is inclusive of travel, hotels, tours, and most meals. You will get to relax and enjoy each day, guided by the staff of Nawas International. While there is still room for additions in this group, the seating in Oberammergau is limited and early reservations are recommended. If you'd like more information about this tour and group travel, please call Beth at 571.344.9794. Brochures detailing the tour are also available at St. Philip.
