The district is piloting a new program called Second Step at the elementary level and at DMS. Second step is a counselor led program for Grades K-5, that teaches the kids about social and emotional needs. Second Step will occur throughout the year, and Mrs. Lipke will be sending out information to families soon. We also have a newly designed elementary World Language program that is exploratory based. Senorita Taylor will continue to teach K, 1st and 2nd grades Spanish, during the 3rd trimester this year. Claire McCourt, new
hire, is currently teaching our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes in the first trimester this year. She will be teaching 3rd, 4th and 5th grade French and German. She will also be teaching 5th grade Latin and Spanish. Each class has approximately 18-20 total lessons. • Picture Day – Wednesday, September 18, 2019 • Open House-THURSDAY, Oct 3, 2019, 6-7:30 p.m.; 1:30 dismissal on FRIDAY, October 4, 2019. The 1:30 dismissal is unique to Fairview only on Friday, October 4, 2019. Students will still be served lunch on this day as it is a bit different from the typical half day. o Shuttles will be scheduled ~ thoughts on location? Ice Cream world is no longer a possible location for shuttle service. Beechwood Farms does not have a large number of parking spaces. Potential other locations for the shuttle are Hartwood/DMS, and possibly St. Joesph’s O’Hara. The locations are all about 6- 7 minutes away from the school. Mr. Edwards will look into these locations a bit more and make a final decision. All staff is encouraged to carpool on this day, and they strategically park in the back to block one another in to maximize the parking for school families. • Student Government – First Meeting October 10th We have drafted a signup letter for students in Grades 3-5 to participate in Student Government. Permission slips will be due on September 18th, and we will conduct a drawing on September 20th. Student Government will start projects for both the school and the community. The theme of the charity is that we would like to go with a charity that involves our kids helping kids around the area. Unfortunately our efforts for the hurricane relief never materialized last year. This year we hope to begin a lot earlier to ensure that we serve our purpose. Last year we ended up doing a beautification project by planting flowers around the building. • Friday, November 8, 2019- Multiple Intelligence Day planning is underway. First committee meeting will be held this month. IV. Standing Committee Updates: Budget - Sarah - Budget Update. Most orders have arrived for the classrooms. There are a few last minute items that were purchased and we have finalized our beginning of the year materials. Facilities and Safety – Jasmine & Stacey o Fire Drill conducted on August 23, 2019. Fire Drill was a success. o Red bag contents emailed to staff Red bag is a Go Bag for classrooms when they are leaving the building with children, includes items like class rosters o Front and main door duty schedules sent to staff
o Parking Spaces (Office Staff / Visitor Parking) see below under old business o Proposed arrival procedures see below under new business Climate and Culture – Corey, Nicole, Jerry – News and Updates Two classrooms will pair together (usually an older grade with a younger grade) and work on the monthly theme. They may create a bulletin board and this theme is also conveyed through our morning announcements. Teacher signups have occurred. Some examples of monthly themes are courage, responsibility, integrity, respect and love. The monthly theme for September is courage. Communications – Kelly, Jill, Donna– News and Updates The T-Shirt Sale Fundraiser is beginning later than noted on the Arts and Activities Calendar. When we select the dates, we do not know at that time when the Homecoming game will be. Because Homecoming is not until October 18th, the Fairview PTO board opted to begin this fundraiser a little later than anticipated. Flyers were distributed to teacher mailboxes today, so children should be receiving order forms today or tomorrow. The flyer will also be included in the Friday Folder this weekend, and orders may be placed through September 20. Shirts will be sent home with children prior to October 18. Instruction and Learning- Steve o Wednesday, October 23 (6:00-7:30 PM) Elementary Math Parent Night HS LGI. The school district sent out an email today with more detailed information including three breakout sessions: Providing Enrichment and Intervention, Developing Fact Fluency, and Showcasing Student Thinking and Work. RSVP by Tuesday, October 15 at https://tinyurl.com/yav42u4a o Teachers are planning instructional responses o Planning to soon begin for MI Day see above NEW BUSINESS: Proposed Arrival Procedures – A proposed arrival procedure has been made to help ease the flow of traffic, and for the safety of our children. The proposed drop off procedure is to minimize the number of entrances for drop off. The 4th grade doors will be eliminated. Busses will drop off at both the 3rd grade doors and the main entrance. Car riders will all enter through the 2nd grade entrance doors. Mr. Edwards will go over the proposed procedure with staff, has already gone over the proposed procedure with the bus drivers. We will attempt this proposed arrival procedure on Friday. Mr. Edwards will receive feedback from staff, and if all goes well, the arrival procedure will be changed.
Exterior Doors – We have had several new exterior doors installed at Fairview. There are still three remaining entrances to be replaced. The main entrance doors, the 3rd grade entrance doors, and the gym doors are on order still, and will be replaced as soon as they arrive. OLD BUSINESS: Parking Spaces –There are 6 visitor spots, and the first spot will be changed to be a 15 minute maximum visitor spot. We are working to get the spaces placed all together rather than staggered here and there. There are still reserved spots for both the principal and the nurse, as the site based team feels this is essential for the safety of our children and staff. Teacher incentive spots have been relocated over to the far end of the building, near the Harts Run side of the school.
FOX CHAPEL AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS READING TOURNAMENT WHAT IS THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS? The Battle of the Books is a program designed to encourage reading and to give recognition to those who like to read. Team members read from a list of selected books found in their school library. They compete with other teams by answering questions based on the books. Although one team is awarded first place, in the form of a traveling school trophy, we feel that all of the participants are winners! As a result, no team scores will be shared. WHO MAY PARTICIPATE? Fourth and fifth grade students in the Fox Chapel Area School District are eligible to participate. Participants should organize their own teams and submit a registration form and payment to their school librarian. Each team must have three to five student members, as well as an adult team manager. WHAT DOES THE TEAM MANAGER DO? The adult team manager may be a parent, relative, or anyone over the age of 18 who will be in charge of communication between the team and the library. The team manager responsibilities include: come to the orientation meeting at Hartwood, fill out the registration form (confirm that all members are interested before including their names), help team members choose which books they will read, decide when/where the team will meet, create practice questions for the team, help the team choose a uniform, help the team gather materials to create a team shield (optional), ensure all team members arrive at Dorseyville Middle School before 6:30 on the night of the tournament, keep score for a different team during the tournament. HOW DOES A TEAM REGISTER? Registration forms will be available at the elementary school libraries. This form, along with a cash registration fee ($1 per child), will be accepted at your school library until September 20th, 2019. An organizational meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 7:00 PM in the Hartwood gymnasium. Please enter through the side door. It is recommended that team managers and individuals who have not previously participated attend this meeting. Copies of the reading list will be distributed at this time, and explanations of the tournament procedures and rules will be given. If desired, books will be available for purchase at the organizational meeting. Each school library will provide multiple copies of every title. WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR THE COMPETITION? The Battle of the Books Tournament will be held in the Dorseyville Middle School gymnasium at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 29, 2019. Check-in times will be from 6:10 to 6:25 pm. Managers and students should enter through the side entrance nearest the gymnasium. Go directly to the gymnasium and be seated. Spectators should enter through the front doors and will be invited in once all the participants are seated. Due to limited seating, we request that each student invite only 2 to 4 spectators. During the competition, the moderator will read each question twice. The team will have 20 seconds to discuss and decide upon the answer to the question. A team member will write the answer on the paper provided. Answers must be complete and specific. Four points are awarded for the correct response, and an additional point is given if the team writes the author’s last name. There are 25 questions asked during the Battle of the Books. Please contact your school library if you have any questions. Mrs. Jasmine Amato Jasmine_amato@fcasd.edu Thank you for helping us to make this a successful event. Dear Families, The Box Tops for Education program is changing the way we can earn cash for our school! Over the summer, participating brands have begun to change their packaging from the traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label. NO MORE CLIPPING SEE THIS... SCAN SEE THIS... CLIP IT YOUR RECEIPT SEE HOW AT SCAN YOUR RECEIPT BTFE.COM Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt. The Box Tops for Education team has worked hard to build a NEW-and-improved, user-friendly Box Tops mobile app, available now. The new app features state-of-the-art technology that allows you to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to our school's earnings online. BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW APP OR UPDATE YOUR EXISTING APP: If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, make sure to send them to school. We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire. Better yet, you can “double dip” during the packaging transition by clipping traditional Box Tops AND scanning your store receipt containing participating products. Thanks for helping our school get what it needs! LEARN MORE ABOUT THESE CHANGES AT BTFE.COM
