NEWS FROM THE PEWS – PAGE 2 GOSPEL Holy Trinity REFLECTION Church, Bembridge Mark 1:9-15 Sunday 27th December 2020 Jesus‘s baptism – a new beginning. Jesus had spent nearly 30 years in preparation for His life‘s work. The baptism by John in the Jordan marked the beginning of it. “Illuminated with love at The descent of the Holy Spirit like a dove was an empowering. God’s voice from heaven was for Jesus, John and any onlookers, confirmation of Divine Christmas Time” approval. Just so, baptism for us marks a new beginning, which may need to be confirmed in our case, by the empowerment of the Spirit in us. This should be an acknowledgement of a new The church is kindly illuminated this week direction for our life. by Ken Now, Jesus didn’t immediately start His ministry, He took a period of 40 days to make more in loving memory preparations. He has simply passed the message onto His followers. We ________________________________________ are to proclaim the good news. Let’s use Lent as a real time of preparation for the glorious future beckoning after lockdown. I do recommend daily Bible study. I have said it before, but _________________ I will say it again, that John’s Gospel can lead to a real spiritual awakening, especially at a time when Christian fellowship is so difficult. The Spring time of release is coming, and with a new Pastor, joyful togetherness will be possible again and it would be so good if we were all prepared to make it excitingly new! Canon David Low.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS – PAGE 4 GEMS FROM JEREMIAH 10 ‘THE KINDNESS OF CAPTAINS’ Jeremiah 40:1-6 The latter part of the book of Jeremiah is full of surprises; (a bit like life really, we don’t know what’s around the corner and often God surprises us in the way He arranges things!). This time, it is Nebuzar-aden, a high-ranking official in the Chaldean army, (Captain of the Guard) sent by Nebuchadrezzar himself to free Jeremiah from imprisonment by his own king’s officials. He actually goes well beyond his remit. Firstly, it is astonishing that Nebuzar-aden speaks about the situation and ascribes it all to Judah’s disobedience to God. He outlines the price of disobedience in turning from God as our choice and it becoming our ‘just deserts’! (v2-3). Then he says to Jeremiah; “If you want to come to Babylon with me, I will look after you and protect you; you will be very welcome! If not, then you can choose to stay anywhere in Judah” (My paraphrase of Jer 40:4). It seems that Jeremiah chose the latter option, because Nebuzar-aden then suggests that Jeremiah stays with Gedaliah, the new Governor. Then, not only does he set him free with advice, he also gives him “Victuals and a reward”, (food and even gifts) and sends him on his way! As we have seen many times, God uses unexpected sources and people to bless and help us, which proves His love for us, and that only He could have arranged it in that way! In which ways had God helped and blessed you through people and situations that surprised and blessed you? I wonder if Jesus had this in mind when He told the parable of ‘The Good Samaritan’? Sometimes God will use us to bless others in ways that we might not expect or think of ourselves and this gives us a chance to point them to Jesus. So, let’s be open to what God might be wanting to do for us and through us, and always be willing to say thank you to Him (and to others) for every Blessing that comes our way. PEW NEWS – PAGE 6 PRAYER THOUGHT Today I am hearing ' Press on'. Sometimes we feel like we're treading water and getting nowhere. As a swimmer I get this. I often spend a little time at the end of a strong swim treading water to relax the muscles and recover, but if I was to only tread water it would not give me the same pleasure and workout that I get from actually swimming. It’s almost as if the treading water prepares me to be ready for the next part of the journey. Often when we feel like we're not making progress on our journey with God, feeling as if we're standing still and treading water or even falling behind, feeling inferior and unfit compared to others, it is precisely in those times that the Holy Spirit longs to comforts us and reactivate us for the next part of the journey. The important thing is that we press on into all God has in store for us and we don't give in to the niggling voice whispering in our ear that we may as well give up now as we've totally blown it and failed to make the mark. We live in days when great change is coming upon the world and, importantly, the Church, and we are chosen to be part of this great transition into the Kingdom age. No wonder the enemy would love to take us out of the battle now at this pivotal time when all of heaven is crying out to the lost and the broken to come home to the Father's house. Each one of us has a part to play in this new Pentecost, and the Father says to us today, 'Don't give up, press on, I'm for you and not against you. I have greater purposes for you that far exceed any struggle with your personal weaknesses you may be going through. Press on. Press on. The finishing line is in sight and this is no time to be giving up'. Each one of us has apart to play in building God’s Kingdom here on earth. We all have different gifts to offer and none is more important than another, in fact, without our gift being part of this building then the work cannot be complete. So lets press on and keep building for God’s glory! "No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us" Philippians 3:13-14 Margaret Jones

PEW NEWS – PAGE 9 Free Bible? What is it all about? Is God still working in our lives? What does He have to say to us now? Life is full of questions and in the Bible, God - the Maker and Sustainer of all things - reveals Himself to us as the answer to those questions. It’s a book with 400 million copies sold or distributed each year plus millions of downloads…a book written by more than 40 human authors over 1,500 years, as they were inspired by God - kings, peasants, philosophers, fishermen, poets and scholars.
