Illuminator “Building relationships with Christ and each other” Volume 25, Number 8 August 2019 A Timely Treasure Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, "What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, "I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God." (Luke 12: 16-21, NRSV) As a pastor, if I told you that I was going to save all my resources to ensure I can live well in the future, you may wonder if I have my heart in the right place. What about the needs of Christ’s flock, God’s people, and creation? Are not Christians—especially pastors—supposed to be concerned and responsive to the plight of the neighbor? While our society requires us to be prudent and plan for the future to a small degree, our service in Christ’s name requires us to be generous to a large degree. In this month of August, you will notice that our assigned scripture readings focus on trust and treasure, bounty and benevolence. Christ himself invites us into a life of trust—a trust that He will provide. He also invites us to look at our lives from the perspective of being rich toward God. Instead of storing up for the future, we are to be a source of sustenance for others, just as we have been sustained by God. How can we possibly trust this God who we cannot see rather than in the power of wealth that we do see? We as individual Christians need to recommit ourselves to trusting God—Every. Single. Day. The same goes for the entire Body of Christ and for our congregation within that body. We, the congregation, need to commit ourselves to trusting God—Every. Single. Day. Though we plan for the future, the planning and what-ifs cannot eclipse the present needs of the day. Too easily and unknowingly, we can serve other gods where earthly treasures become our be-all and end-all rather than serving the God. It is wise for us to recommit ourselves to trust in God’s provision and turn the greatest amount of our attention on the present. Christ says, “Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God- provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find that your everyday concerns will be met. Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” (Matthew 6:33-34, The Message) May God continue to lead you as you put your trust in God’s care of you. And may God continue to guide our congregation as we place our priority on service in Christ’s name. Pastor Sally

Lutheran Disaster Response Dear friends, Jesus David, 26, was born in Venezuela. An engineer, he’s known for his positive attitude and smile. Venezuela has been rocked by a massive crisis with political economic and humanitarian dimensions leading to myriad problems. Inflation is skyrocketing. Food and medicine have become too expensive for many people, so hunger and health crises abound. Power outages are forcing schools and businesses to close and cutting people off from communication with their friends and families. Without running water, some people have been forced to drink from polluted sources. Like an estimated 2 to 3 million other people, Jesus David and his wife, Shery, fled Venezuela for Colombia to escape the worsening political, economic, and humanitarian situation. This alarming crisis and many like it around the world have led tens of millions of people to flee their homes. Lutheran Disaster Response works to help people around the world whose lives have been disrupted by disasters ranging from political conflict to hurricanes to wildfires to health crises. We will continue to respond to every disaster that we can because we believe God is calling us to bring hope and healing to people like Jesus David and Shery in their times of need. To do so, we need continued support in the form of undesignated gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response. Will you make a donation today? People migrating to Colombia risk their lives by walking for days, facing obstacles including militarization at the border. Venezuelans who arrive in Columbia face additional challenges such as limited access to basic services, exploitation in work environments, instability to their immigration status, and xenophobia. Thanks to you, Jesus David and Shery have more hope and options as they start a new life. At a livelihood workshop organized by the Lutheran World Federation and funded in part by Lutheran Disaster Response, they learned new skills and put together a business plan for their own photography and computer-training business. In the face of a crisis, Jesus David is still hopeful. I’m inspired by his determination and entrepreneurial attitude. “I dream of many things,” Jesus David says. “I like everything that is part of the training. It is good for the benefit of both Venezuelan and Columbian families. I thank you for having the initiative to help those who need it at this time.” Thank you for your continued support and prayers for this critical work. Today, you can help ensure that relief and recovery continue for our neighbors affected by disasters, and that we’re ready when the next disaster strikes. Can I count on you? With gratitude, The Rev. Daniel Rift Director, ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response Funding Evangelical Lutheran Church in America NOTE: In 2018, Lutheran Disaster Response was working in 37 countries including the United States. In 2018, Lutheran Disaster Response was working in 18 states and territories in the United States.
