From the DRE Ellen Cormier February is “We have a HEART Month”. Unitarian Universalist churches and fellowships are known for their social action efforts. Congregants and members come together to do the work of helping and giving. It’s in our DNA. And because we lead by example, our children benefit from all such activities. This month in Religious Education we ENCOUNTER the concepts and realities of “Giving” and “Helping.” Our multi-age group will share in the discussion and experience of coming to understanding what these words mean and develop their own social action projects or plans. Kid love action, and we are willing to guess that they have ideas and energy that will make us proud. It’s in our DNA, you see! Groundhog Day. Yep, Groundhog Day. This was a big day in our home because it is my brother’s birthday. (imagine the teasing!) Groundhog Day - A “holiday” or event based on no factual scientific truths what so ever- like other “holidays” we celebrate. Why THIS event? If you live “up north,” Groundhog Day is a big deal. It promises the hope that all that ice, snow and shoveling will end sooner, rather than later. If you have never lived where the plows moved snow and ice from the street and blocked the driveway that you just spent hours clearing, you really hoped the Groundhog would not see it’s shadow, and that Spring is near. Groundhog Day, then is a holiday of hope. It’s a bit of a tease, but the hope one feels makes it worthwhile. And when the hope fades, the fun we had “hoping” changes to: “Well six more weeks isn’t THAT long!” Hope brings excitement and optimism. Hope is a good thing. And to all my friends and family in Massachusetts: I hope to see you in Florida soon! Hope. -Ellen February 2018 3

We need a few old-style, 1Gb or more, memory chips as pictured below. If you have some lying around (because they're pretty much obsolete), UUFBR can put them to good use! Please leave them on the volunteers' desk in the office. There'll be an envelope marked "Audio Chips" there. Or hand them to Charlie Cormier at anytime. Thank you! February 2018 4

OPEN DOOR ACUPUNCTURE A Community Acupuncture Clinic, Located in the Rockberger Room Erica Siegel, A.P. Acupuncture Physician, D.O.M. Doctor of Oriental Medicine (Florida) Clinic Hours: Sunday: 8:30-10:30 AM, 12:00-3:00 PM Monday: 5:00-9:00 PM Tuesday: Clinic closed Wednesday: 9:00 AM-2:00 PM Thursday: 8:00 AM-2:00 PM Friday: Clinic closed Saturday: 9:00 AM-3:00 PM Acupuncture and herbal medicine can be used to treat a wide variety of health complaints, either as a stand- alone treatment or in conjunction with other modalities. Many people simply enjoy that acupuncture makes them feel good, and allows them to better cope with stress and emotional issues. Erica has a Masters in Oriental Medicine (4-year program) from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (New York City), and has been practicing acupuncture and herbal medicine for 11 years. In this professional clinic, treatments are given in a community setting, meaning that a handful of patients will relax and receive acupuncture in the same room at the same time. This community method allows cost to stay low for both practitioner and patient. After a private consultation with Erica, patients move to a massage table or comfortable recliner where they can receive a treatment and then relax and heal in a quiet, serene environment. Fees are on a sliding scale of $15-$50 per treatment, with each patient deciding what he or she can afford for each treatment. There is an initial consultation fee of $10. The traditional model which prevails in the United States - that of charging patients up to $200 for private acupuncture in a spa- like setting, has made Chinese medicine unaffordable for most. Community acupuncture opens the door to the many who could benefit from treatment, but who could not previously afford it. Moreover, the pricing structure allows many people to come very frequently, which is how acupuncture works best. Start the New Year feeling good! GIVE ACUPUNCTURE A TRY! Erica can be reached at ericasiegel8@gmail.com or by cell 718-541-4931 to answer any questions or to book an appointment. 12:00 noon, Monday, February 19th is the submission deadline for the March Unicorn. No exceptions! February 2018 6
Submitted by Carolyn Brown, Healing Justice member Healing Justice: Celebrations and Next Steps.... On January 7, 2018 we ushered in the New Year by learning more about Being Neighbors with the Pearl City area of Boca Raton. Marjorie O'Sullivan and Allen Willis represented DISC (Developing Interracial Social Change). We were also treated to a dance routine by young people from this area who were led by Dr. Debra Weiss. Alan Willis emphasized the need to see one another with love which dovetails with the UUA stance of Siding with Love. Then came January 15 2018, Martin Luther King Day with UUFBR being present for the memorial ceremony at the MLK Jr. Monument in Boca Raton with the parade and fun activities at Sanborn Square. Reverend Harris Riordan was recognized at all these gatherings. She represents all of us at UUFBR. All of these activities, to include the concert on Saturday night at Sanborn Square, offered us the opportunity to be neighbors, getting to know one another more fully. All was exhilarating and uplifting. Leaving us with NOW WHAT? Healing Justice has work yet to do. At our next meeting, perhaps our agenda could include some, or all, of these items. Let us know what you think. Our agenda is always open...: How activist do Healing Justice members want to be: We could discuss the article in the Winter UU World, "Do you have to be an activist to be a Unitarian Universalist?" https://www.uuworld.org/ articles/activism-unitarian-universalist. What is the Healing Justice role within UUFBR and within the wider South Florida community? How long does it take to make a difference in the prevailing culture of racism in our communities? Do we dare to look at where our own actions perpetuate racism; to explore our roles in institutional and/or structural racism? Can we work to eradicate racism and yet acknowledge where we too are racist? Could that be? What is DISC and how can UUFBR be a good neighbor with DISC and the Pearl City area? Would we want to modify our signs that say Standing on the Side of Love to reflect the more current UU thinking, Siding with Love? What's behind this thinking? What do we know about Black Lives Matter and what is it doing in Palm Beach County? Do we really know? How does BLM fit with UU work? How might we choose to support BLM efforts? In 2018 Black Lives Matter Palm Beach County plans to continue to work to restore voters' rights for felons in Florida. IT WILL BE ON THE FLORIDA BALLOT FOR 2018 so now the hard work begins; getting out the vote. Equally important is working to keep military hardware out of the hands of local law enforcement. The third item is working to repeal Florida's Stand Your Ground legislation. Remember Corey Jones? In October 2015, as a UUFBR congregation, we mourned together the loss of Corey's life... he waited for help with his disabled vehicle in the wee small hours of the morning and was shot and killed by an off duty police person, Nouman Raja. Raja was relieved of duty, arrested and charged with murder. Recent news indicates that Nouman Raja plans to use Stand Your Ground as his defense in this murder trial. Read the following article about this development. (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/opinion/fl-op-column-randy-schultz-stand-your- ground-damage-20180123-story.html) All this is a lot to think about. There is much work to do. So, moving into February 2018, Healing Justice invites you to join us in our continuing journey of bending all of us a little more toward racial justice. We meet Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 PM in Osias, just outside the sanctuary. Watch the Healing Justice kiosk in Osias for articles and updates. February 2018 7
