Voice of the Servant 2021 Points of Interest “Random Acts of Lent” Pg. 3 Micropantry, Nightengail’s, Rummage Sale Pg. 4 Book Review During February, Christians worldwide will enter into the annual season of Lent. Many of us didn’t grow up with any particular practice during these 40 days, but either Pg. 6 Bible Trivia giving up something or adding something into our lives has become more popular in Pg. 8 Ash Wednesday Protestant churches in the last few decades. To be clear, Presbyterians have no requirement to do (or not do) anything for Lent at all. It’s certainly not taught in scripture, and Jesus never told us to mark these days on the calendar. However, many churches encourage practices that help us be more in touch with our faith, and use this time to grow spiritually. Either giving something up or adding a practice in can be extremely beneficial to us at any time of year, and Lent—when we remember the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, Online Giving fasting and in prayer—is a perfect time. That said, will you observe Lent this year? Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, and it falls on February 17 this year – which is coincidentally also Random Acts of Kindness Day in the United States. This works out nicely if you’re an “add in a new discipline” person. The Bible calls us to be generous and gracious. Jesus told us to love and serve others. Perhaps, during these strange times of being more distant from one another, Lent would be a good time to add in at least one random act of kindness per day. A few ideas could include: • Pray for someone just because they crossed your mind, and let them know you’re praying for them. • Send a “just because” card to let someone know they’re on your mind • Let an essential worker know you appreciate their work. • “Ding dong ditch” someone—leave a box of treats and someone’s doorstep, ring the bell, and literally scram! • Mail a gift card anonymously to someone you know is going through a rough patch. There’s dozens, if not hundreds of other ideas – just ask me if you need more! Whatever you decide to add in or leave out of your life, have a blessed Lenten 2021 season! Per Capita Pastor Susan is $38.50 Per Person

PAGE 4 Book Review UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATIONS WITH A BLACK MAN By - Emmanuel Acho—Published in 2020 First off let me say that I found this book interesting. I grew up and worked in an area of the country with diverse peoples and cultures. I find History and cultures exciting. I find that in order to understand people you have to listen to their viewpoint. I have never had a problem doing this since we all have different backgrounds. The title says it all. If your not prepared to be uncomfortable then this book is not for you. If you have an inquisitive mind then take the chance and open it. You can always put it down. Mr. Acho is a First Generation American from Nigeria who comes from a two parent upper middle class home, is well educated and is doing well in life. I hope others take the time to read this book. Book review by Bill Coughlin Available at the library Something Inspiring We would like to have a monthly book review, poem or inspirational writing in the newsletter, by a church member. It does not need to be long and fancy or worthy of the NY Times; we’re just looking for your two cents on. Just something that touched you or inspired you to share. Did you like it? Hate it? Tell us about it, and why? Bible Trivia Miracles of Jesus 1. How was the woman with the issue of blood healed by Jesus? 2. Where did Jesus work his first miracle? 3. "Recent research in neuroscience suggests that you might look to the library for solutions; reading literary fiction helps people develop empathy, theory of mind, and critical thinking. When we read, we hone and strengthen several different cognitive muscles, so to speak." With that in mind, our featured library section this month is fiction.
