Volume 42 No. 6 February 2021 Parksville Quilt House Quilters’ Guild PO Box 1177, Parksville, BC V9P 2H2 http://parksvillequilthousequilters.com Purpose of the Guild: “To promote and encourage interest in the excellence of quilting” Meetings suspended till further notice… See inside for Workshop activities MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Here it is February! The same way I started off my “Message from the Vice President” a year ago. None of us had the slightest idea of the challenges that were right around the corner. What a year it has been. Even though a year later we aren’t physically meeting, our guild has a vibrant energy happening which is actually attracting new members. I continue to feel extremely thankful to work with our Executive and Management Committee. Our guild has more than just survived the last year due to all of the hard work put in by so many. And all of our members who have participated, given feedback and supported the efforts made this year. You all deserve a standing ovation! What’s coming next? By the time this newsletter is out, you will have chosen a new domain name for our website, which won’t change anything but our website address. At the January Management Committee meeting, a motion was passed to make our newsletter open only to members. The earliest this will happen is for the April newsletter and only after a lot of communication. We will reach out to those folks who struggle a bit with our website. Our website liaison, Robbie T. and our webmaster Tim S. are involved in literally everything we do. We have all put in a lot of hours and these two have been there alongside each and every one of us! I have to say something about the closing of our community centre. You have all likely seen the negative press releases put out from city hall. I ask that you remember there is always, always more than one side to a situation. Two ad hoc committees were called for at the January Management meeting: Location and Fund Raising. The Location committee, led by Roxane, has started the search for possible meeting places. We want to be prepared when physical meetings can resume. If you are interested in participating in the Fund Raising Committee please connect with me. You might know I love creating for the holidays, any holiday. Can’t wait for the Valentine Sew Along; you know this is a FREE event right? Don’t forget your besties on Valentines’ Day, it’s a great time to acknowledge how much our friendships mean to us. ~ Sandi It Sew Happens Volume 42 No. 6
PROGRAM Learn to Love Appliqué with Apliquick Rosa Rojas Join Rosa Rojas, a Spanish designer and artist, creator of APLIQUICK ®™ tools, for a free 45-minute Zoom presentation, in which she shows how she uses these tools to create stunning appliqué. She will show us how it is all about ‘letting the tools’ do the work. This presentation will take place on February 9th at 10:00 a.m. The link will be sent to you via e-cast a few days before the presentation. Rosa was born in Barcelona and now lives in Girona, Spain. Dedicated to Business Management for 25 years, quilting was her hobby. Her passion for appliqué led her to develop a new appliqué technique and design Apliquick tools. She left the business world behind after meeting Olga González-Angulo, biologist, owner of a quilting shop in Girona, an artist and winner of several national and international quilt awards. In 2012 they founded a company, APLIQUICK ®™, dedicated to introducing her tools and appliqué method to the quilting world. Rosa travels all over the world promoting APLIQUICK and offers national and international classes to teach her new innovative technique to achieve stellar appliqué in an easy, quick and fun way. Get your Motor Running Melissa Marginet Melissa Marginet is a quilt artist, teacher and author, from Manitoba. Her two books, Walking Foot Quilting Designs and Edge-to-Edge Walking Foot Quilting Designs reflect her fondness for teaching quilting. However, in this presentation, we will learn how to spark creativity in ourselves or in our guild, with challenges that will have everyone thinking outside the box. This trunk show has more ideas than we will know what to do with to get everyone not only learning new techniques, but building their quilting and creative confidence. This 1.5 hour virtual presentation (45min + Q&A) will take place on February 22nd at 7:00 p.m. There is no need to pre-register for this program, which is presented in conjunction with the Nanaimo Guild. The link will be sent out a couple of days prior to the presentation. Pattern for Tidy Tote, large "By Annie" from Australia. ~ Joyce M. Here is a UFO sample from close to 10 years ago, that I just finished. I think it was a Guild class, but I don’t remember the instructor’s name. The interesting part is that we used a soldering iron, yes a soldering iron, to melt the lame in the background. Certainly a fun and interesting technique. ~ Nancy M. [According to another member, the instructor of the “Take a Leaf” class was former member/ fibre artist Judy Farrow - Ed.] Volume 42 No. 6 3

Melissa Marginet is an avid quilter whose passion is to teach and inspire other quilters. She is known for quilting with a walking foot and travels to teach her techniques and empower quilters to quilt their own quilts on their home sewing machines. She is now also offering her classes online. She has published two books, “Walking Foot Quilting Designs” and “Edge-to-Edge Walking Foot Quilting Designs” as well as several quilt patterns. You can visit her website melissamarginet.ca to find out more about her and see her work. Modern Quilting with your Walking Foot (6 hours) As a participant in this class, you will make samples of different quilting ideas that can be executed on the home sewing machine with a walking foot. Not everyone can afford a longarm quilter or wants to have someone else quilt their quilt, and not everyone enjoys free motion quilting. You will create samples of walking foot designs on small quilt sandwiches to help you understand what makes each design successful. We will also look at variations of the designs you stitch out. These samples will be a great reference for you when deciding how to quilt your next quilt. This class includes information on quilting all sizes of quilts on the home sewing machine - ALL LEVELS. Based on my book, Walking Foot Quilting Designs which is recommended for the class. As mentioned above, the book is not required for the class but if you are interested, we can do a group purchase of the recommended book. The cost of shipping would depend on how many copies we would be ordering. The book that goes with our workshop, “Walking Foot Quilting Designs” costs $25. The order can include “Edge- to-Edge Walking Foot Quilting Designs” as well ($30). Registration for workshops utilizes a form you can find on our website in the Benefits tab then further in the Workshops section. Shirley Coleman or Ruth Stewart will contact you by email to organize payment by cheque, cash, or E-transfer. We will let the pictures tell the story of the 2021 Mystery Quilt Workshop. The Workshop Committee hopes everyone had a great time! ~ Ruth S. and Shirley C., Workshops Page 6 Quilt Talk—February 2021

WHISPER INSPIRATION CHALLENGE (MISSED PIECE FROM JANUARY ISSUE) This work was mistakenly left out of the Whisper Inspiration Challenge piece in the January issue: Cheryl passed on her piece to Susan S., who was again inspired by water. She said, “Water always takes me to the ocean and this is one of my favorite ocean pictures. It was a calm morning on Rebecca Spit. The fog was lifting to a beautiful blue sky day. It will be familiar to some of you as I am sure you took the same photo" (Guild retreat one January). Susan's technique was felted wool. (below top) Mystery quilt ~ Colleen M. Volume 42 No. 6 9

HOMEWOOD RETREAT OCTOBER 25-29 2021 Get Ready, here we go! Mark you calendar! The vaccine is coming soon to any of us that want it so we are planning our fall retreat. There may still be some restrictions but the dates will be October 25-29. We don't yet know all of the details, just the date. As we get more information from Homewood, we will pass it on. We hope to start registration in May. Your new co-ordinators are Betty Kozak and Elaine Eddy (with a lot of assistance from Debbie and Cathy). It won't be a lot different this year as they did a fabulous job over the past few. If you are new to the guild, it is a great way to get acquainted with other members. If you are interested in being on the list for the latest info as we go forward, email us at homewood@parksvillequilthousequilters.com We are looking forward to a fun time once again. ~ Betty K. & Elaine E. Left over scraps? The 3 scrappy quilts on the left were sent to a cancer raffle in PEI. ~ Nancy M. Another UFO. I cut out the letters and that was no quick task. It’s a raw edge appliqué wall hanging. Truly, it’s not wavy - that’s just how it was draped on my sofa. ~ Nancy M. Page 14 Quilt Talk—February 2021
Cushion cover and round table topper I made for my daughter, using fabrics from a quilt I made her last fall. ~ Anne P. (right) Lola D. My Bargello bed quilt had served us well for 20 years and was showing more than a bit of wear! It seemed like a good time to retire it and replace it with a "Pandemic" project. The pattern is "The Northern Lights", pieced by myself, quilted by Kismet Quilts, with artistic consultation by my husband John! ~ Claudette M. Volume 42 No. 6 15
GUILD SEW DAY UPDATE The re-start of our monthly sew days is still in limbo, for now. We are closely watching the reports from our Provincial Health Authorities and will certainly let you all know as soon as we can begin scheduling our “Sew Day” events. We are being mindful of the health and safety of not only our members, but also those who provide services to the guild and our members’ families; so we will not be inviting you to gather until such time as it is deemed safe. For the time being, stay safe, enjoy completing those UFO’s or creating new projects. Watch the Guild newsletters, Facebook and e-casts for updates to the scheduling of future Sew Days. CQA UPDATE Happy February! I trust you are still able to dabble in your quilting at a pace that works for you. I have recently taken on the role as the CQA representative for our guild and realized how much more I needed to learn about our national organization. First up, the mission statement and aims/objectives. These statements help us understand the ‘why?’ of this organization. Our Mission The CQA/ACC mission is to promote and celebrate quilting and Canadian quilters by preserving the traditions of those who have come before us while looking to new and creative ways to enhance quilting for the present and future. Our Aims and Objectives To promote a greater understanding, appreciation and knowledge of the art, techniques, and heritage of patchwork, appliqué and quilting. To promote the highest standards of workmanship and design in both traditional and innovative work. To foster cooperation and sharing between quilt-makers across the country. The CQA website provides examples of the above mentioned aims and objectives. There is something for everyone! For those who do not have a membership, you will find plenty of content, resources and challenges. Those who are members i.e. regular, guild or professional, gain further content and resources. CQA hosts a Quilt Judge Certification Program as well as a list of current judges. These folks become very important when we host quilt shows at local, provincial and national levels. Quilt Canada annually celebrates Canadian quilters and their work. News: Quilt Canada will be virtual this year, so save the dates: June 16-19 2021. ~ submitted by Sue G. Here is my “Gypsy Wife Quilt”, just a top at the moment, have to take it down south to quilt on my Handi Quilter there, who knows when. It was marvelous fun to put together, had it up on my design wall for quite some time and was actually sorry to reach the end. Think I'll do the Boho Heart next, which is sort of similar with background strips and lots of different fabrics and squares to make the heart. ~ Judi M. (left) Page 22 Quilt Talk—February 2021

COMFORT QUILTS Happy February ❤ This month I am focusing on preparing new quilt kits. Comfort quilts received a donation of fabric from a fellow quilter who is downsizing. We thank her for her generosity. I also wish to thank the longarmer who has helped reduce the backlog of quilt tops that needed quilting. Hopefully by the time you read this deliveries will have been made to facilities in Port Alberni. Next collection will go to the Nanaimo NICU, chemo and dialysis units. Not having regular meetings has resulted in a decrease of comfort quilt donations. I thank all of you who contribute regularly. Hopefully we can continue to provide to all the facilities on our list. Looking forward to the day of regular meetings. Happy Quilting everyone! ~ Mirella Y., Comfort Quilt Coordinator mmyanko61@gmail.com I’ve finally finished quilting another UFO.
