Scraps and Pieces October 2019 ATTTENTION: ANOUNCEMENTS TO TAKE NOTE OF: Show and tell release forms: Please add a description of your quilt. Something as little as this is a blue and white quilt. It will help us when we are add them to the website to make sure we have the correct quilt with the correct person. Plus, we would love to add a descrip- tion of your quilt to our website. Trudy has loaded the web permission slip on the web under the last tab, member resources. You can fill it out beforehand if you’d like to in the future. If you are new or would like to update your picture for our online directory. You can do that one of two ways: Allow us to take your picture during the break at our monthly meetings. Or send a jpg picture of yourself to Trudy. trudy5407@gmail.com We are missing a lot of member photos. Members can look in the online directory. If your photo is not shown, it is because we don’t have it. If you want their picture in the directory, you need to have your photo taken at a meeting. It is really helpful for photos to be in the directory so people can identify you! Thanks! Sue Licher 4
Scraps and Pieces October 2019 Library Update There have been some changes to the Ruth McIntire Memorial Library over the summer. We were able to add more books and patterns from Ruth as well as some new books requested by members of the Guild. Take a look under the Member Information tab and the next to the bot- tom selection will be the library. Once you click there and you will be brought in to the library with information on how the library works and breakouts of books and patterns to choose from. The first two selections are All Books ad All Pat- terns. After that, you will see the new items add- ed in July and June - over the summer. And, if you are looking for a specific type of book or pattern, check out the many categories. And, if you have books you no longer need and are willing to share them, bring them to a Guild Meeting and Trudy will get them added to the library. If there is a specific item you are looking to have in the library, or have sugges- tions, please contact Trudy Cox You may email me at trudy5407@gmail.com or call 435-313- 5407. Website News The dixiequiltguild.com website is up and running as a secure website. Visitors may login and learn about us by checking the first 4 tabs. The last 3 tabs are for Members Only and require a login and password. If you have not received your login or password, please let me know and I will get you one right away. Once you login, you may access any information in the Member sec- tions. The member directory is updated by Sue Licher every month after Guild Meeting. Pictures of members are included in the directory, if desired. You may have your picture taken at a Guild meeting or by providing a picture (jpg) of your choice and Sue will add it to our directory. There is one exception to members listed on the on-line directory, which the website host is working to correct. That is, members who have an email account that begins with a number rather than an alphabet letter will not load. Those of you that fall into this category are still on the mailing list for newsletters and emails from Jeanette, not just listed on the directory until the programing is updated. Pictures of quilts taken at Guild meetings for Show-n-Tell are displayed on the website under the Member Photos Section. You will be able to see the most current meeting listed first. Also a brief description of the meeting will be included for those who missed the meeting or for a refresher of what happened. If you would like to display what you have done on the website without bringing your quilt or item to the Guild Meeting for the Show-n-Tell, you may take a picture (jpg), and send that along with a description (such as this was for my Granddaughter, or this was from a class that I loved, etc.) and send it to me. It will be included in the next month’s on-line Show-n-Tell. Any concerns or suggestions for the website, please let me know. You may email me at trudy5407@gmail.com or call 435-313-5407. I am always happy to help. Trudy Cox, Webmaster 5

Scraps and Pieces October 2019 DIXIE QUILT GUILD CHALLENGE 2020 “2020 VISION; FOCUS ON COMING TOGETHER” The Quilt Challenge for 2020 was announced at the September guild meeting. Your Challenge is to make a small quilt that addresses the subject of ‘coming together’. This could be interpreted with a subject matter about bringing our quilt guild members together, about friends or making friends, about family togetherness in fun, love and/or sharing. Please share something about yourself. However, we ask you please keep your message positive if making a social statement. We reserve the right to eliminate negative messages. All entries will become a part of a special exhibit at the next DQG quilt show in 2021. This challenge is open to all guild members, no matter what skill level. Your quilt could be constructed in a simple or complex manner, or anywhere in between. It could be pieced, ma- chine or hand appliquéd, or made in any style of quilting your heart desires. Rules: The Entries MUST BE: 20” x 20” square, including binding. Quilts not meeting that measurement will be ineligi- ble. Three (3) layers; top, batting, backing. Bound. Have a 4” hanging sleeve, (instructions for making a hanging sleeve will be made availa- ble). Turned in with completed DQG Challenge 2020 application form, and label sewn to lower right corner of the back of the quilt ( application form). THE APPLICATION WILL BE AVAILABLE IN JANUARY, 2020 Entries are to be delivered to Janey Argyle at her home on or before April 25, 2020. 1360 E. Telegraph St. #139 Washington, UT 84780 Quilts will be exhibited and voted upon by the DQG members who attend the May, 2020 meeting, and prizes will be awarded during the June, 2020 meeting. After viewing and voting, quilts will be returned to the maker at the end of the May meeting. If you have a quilt in the challenge but are unable to attend the May meeting, you must send a designated representative with your application identification ticket to pick up your quilt. We are pleased to coordinate this fun, important function for the Dixie Quilt Guild. If you have questions, please text either Janey Argyle or Carroll Lee Stolz. Our phone numbers are in the 2019 Membership Directory. Have Fun!! 8
Scraps and Pieces October 2019 A Class Reunion - Reminder During the year 2018, many of our members participated in the seven different workshops provided for our Guild. The enthusiasm was high, and the energy was evident in every one held. The hope was that you would go back to your sewing rooms and use some of the tech- niques and good ideas that were shared. With those, it may be that a quilt or two might have emerged, and you will be willing to share what you’ve done with what was learned. As a reminder, here is what was taught in 2018. (Does that seem like a decade ago?) In January we played with the technique of foundation piecing with freezer paper. We learned that you could use this paper, and NOT have to stitch ON the paper, but along folded edges - and it easily lifted off after the block was finished. The other plus was that you could use the pattern more than once. In March we talked about wool, and all the wonderful things you can do with that beautiful textile. We learned about washing, felting, dying and storing the fabric - and then each of us made a little needle case - or an eyeglass case from the kit provided. In April, we laughed about how many tools we might have and which ones we really want in the workshop “I Have This Tool”. In May we made accessories for our sewing room, which might have been an ironing board cover, an applique pillow or other useful items. In September, we learned about “Disappearing Stuff”, and experimented with cutting up blocks to make them into a myriad of other designs. In October we discovered just what that 60 degree line was for on our rulers, and VIOLA - there were SO many fun blocks that could be made with that idea. In November, we formed our own little communities, when we found that “It Takes a Village” .... and we made houses of our own. So much fun ! Did any of that ring a bell? Do you have something you’d be willing to share? If so, get it out and ready for our November guild meeting, and let’s have a remarkable “Show and Tell”. Thanks so much for participating and being part of this wonderful set of workshops. Scraps and Pieces October 2019 Gems of the Desert Quilt Show 2021 Hard to believe, but it is time to begin planning for our next quilt show in 2021. The Dixie Center is unable to commit to us any dates in March for our show but were able to commit to dates in early April. Easter is on April 4 th of 2021 and we wanted to stay away from that weekend but not too late in April as some of our snowbirds start flying north. We have booked April 6th -10th, the week after East- er as our dates. We have scheduled the same rooms as the 2019 show so far which would include rooms for classes. Attendance for classes was lacking somewhat in 2019 and the committee and board will have serious discussions as to whether we will hold classes in 2021. I will be asking the membership for a show of hands at the September show of those that would be willing to attend classes during show week. Many hours go into planning classes and dollars spent for teachers and rooms so attendance needs to be there for it. Many have come forward to volunteer for the show committee so far but we need the following committee chairs: Classes and Teachers Coordinator Show Quilt Organizers Ribbons and Prizes Security Signs and Posters Banners Please notify me or Lynea Askey if you are interested in serving as chairperson of any of these committees. Looking forward to seeing you all at the September Guild Meeting on September 14th. Hugs, Bruce E. Bussey Co-Chair 2021 Quilt Show Dixie Quilt Guild PO Box 2812 St, George, UT 84771-2812 www.dixiequiltguild.com The Dixie Quilt Guild encourages, promotes and preserves the art of quilt making.
