2019 MAYDAY TRAVEL DAY TRIP BROCHURE Welcome to our 2019 Day Trip brochure where you will find something for everyone. We have introduced many new places to tempt the traveller in you, and kept our prices very competitive, and have also introduced a Christmas weekend trip as well. As many trips are popular, please book early to avoid disappointment. In 2020 we are planning to run a couple of mini breaks in the UK and would invite you to register your interest. The trips will be both 5 days, one being a tour of Edinburgh and the surrounding areas with a visit to a distillery and the second being the Lake District. If you have any suggestions for the itinerary please feel free to contact the office. POLESDON LACEY (NT) New for 2019 Join us on a visit to Polesdon Lacey an Edwardian house and estate, located on the North Downs at Great Bookham, near Dorking, Surrey. This Regency house was expanded from an earlier building, and extensively remodelled in 1906 by Margaret Greville, a well-known Edwardian hostess. Her collection of fine paintings, furniture, porcelain and silver is displayed in the reception rooms and galleries. The estate grounds are 1,400 acres and include a walled rose garden, lawns, ancient woodland and many landscape walks. The future George VI and Queen Elizabeth spent part of their honeymoon here in 1923. Join us for a relaxing day in the countryside. We will drive to the quaint town of Rye with its many attrac- tions including the Ypres (pronounced “wipers”) tower, which is a 13th century building, the medieval church of St Mary the Virgin and the famous Mermaid Street. There will be plenty of free time for wandering around and lunch. We will then make the short journey to The Black Lion in Appledore, where you will have a lovely home made cream tea with unlimited tea and coffee. Knole is a country house situated within Knole Park, a 1,000-acre park located immediately to the south-east of Sevenoaks in west Kent. The house apparently ranks in the top five of England’s largest houses, under any measure used, occupying a total of four acres.The current house dates back to the mid-15th centu- ry, with major additions in the 16th and, particularly, the early 17th centuries. Its grade I listing reflects its mix of late-medieval to Stuart structures, and particularly its central façade and state rooms. Chartwell is a country house near the town of Westerham, Kent And for over forty years it was the home of Winston Churchill. He bought the property in September 1922 and lived there until shortly be- fore his death in January 1965. This house is steeped in history and in the 1930s, when Churchill was excluded from political office, Chartwell became the centre of his world. In his study, he composed speeches and wrote books; in his garden, he built walls, constructed lakes and painted. He lived there up until October 1964. Wisley is now a large and diverse garden covering 240 acres. In addition to numerous formal and informal decorative gardens, several glasshouses and an extensive arboretum, it includes small scale “model gardens” which are intended to show visitors what they can achieve in their own gardens, and a trials field where new cultivars are assessed. The Bicentenary Glasshouse is major new feature which covers three quarters of an acre and overlooks a new lake built at the same time. Accompanied by our Blue Badge Guide, we will drive to Dedham which is the heart of Constable country where Constable went to school. It has a very attractive High Street with independent shops, and the fine church of St. Mary’s, built by wealthy Medieval wool merchants. We will then make the short journey to East Bergholt. This is where Constable was born and where The church of St. Mary the Virgin has the famous bell Cage in it’s church yard, along with the graves of John Constable’s parents and Willy Lott. We will then drive to Flatford Mill. This is Owned by the National Trust, and here you can visit Willy Lott’s house, little changed since Constable painted the iconic HayWain. Polhill is a family owned and run horticultural and shopping village with over 50 years of gardening experience. You will find plants, garden tools, a marvellous Butcher and farm shop. Included in the visit is a deli- cious two course (self service) lunch. £26.50 All seats Pick up Letter G Expected return time 1730 Wednesday 17th July / Ref:PG001 CLANDON HOUSE AND HATCHLANDS PARK (NT) Clandon Park House is an early 18th-century grade I listed Palladian mansion in West Clandon, near Guildford in Surrey. In 2015, a serious fire broke out effectively leaving the house a shell. Visiting now presents a unique opportunity to see the bare bones of this grand house in its post-repair state. You can follow two covered walkways, one into the ground and the second into the basement spaces (Please wear sturdy footwear). There are two formal gardens on either side of the house, and nearby is a Māori meeting house, one of only four outside New Zealand, that was brought to England in the late 19th century. After our short visit we will journey onto Hatchlands Park. The house was the work of celebrated architect Robert Adam and his influence can be seen in interiors throughout the house. The house is famous for its extensive art collec- tion which contains many works by J. M. W. Turner. It also has an expansive deer park, landscaped by Capability Brown, which contains the largest herd of fallow deer in England. The castle is a quad- rangular plan, and interestingly it has no keep, having its various chambers built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts. Its corners and entrance are marked by towers, and topped by crenellations. The castle sits in an artificial watery land- scape which indicates that the display was an important aspect of the castle’s design as well as defence. The boat will cruise along the idyllic Loxwood Link section of the canal, which is only one part of an extensive system. The Wey and Arun Canal formed a vital link, the only one between the south coast, linking London and the busy river Thames.
