This month’s “cover page” is Wal Reed’s Cortina 240 I purchased the car from Geelong – sight unseen in January 2015. When it arrived, it was a bit of a shock as it needed a lot of work, starting with body work which I did myself – Paint Mazda Pure Red by Gunmaster Bob O’Brien. Most mechanicals were completely worn out. After much thought, I decided to go down the modification track, to make a more driveable car. The engine was replaced with a 1997 Toyota 1800cc out of a Lite Ace Van, complete with 4 speed overdrive auto; Brakes from a Toyota Starlet; Speedo Drive and Cable from a Toyota Hilux; Radiator from a Nissan Vanette. Fully engineered by RTA. I myself ended up being on a first-name basis with the local wrecking yard. The moral of the story is “Photos don’t always tell the story when buying a car”. BROKE FAIR RUN 8th September 2019 On arrival at the Meeting place we met with all the other members and visitors who were attending the Broke Fair. The weather was a bit chilly at Wyee and even I felt the coldness of the air. Given the usual information of what way we were going and the approximate speed we will be travelling, this is so we can hopefully all keep up. We have arrived and it didn't take long to get to our designated spot under the cool of the trees. We set up our chairs and tables and most of us then got down to the hot coffee, tea and cakes and bickies. Yum. Then it happened............ The men went for the cars and.............. The women went for the stalls. A few plants given to each family and some interesting purchases were made. Lots of members from other clubs interacted with our club members and some caught up with people they had not seen in a long time. The day seemed to go so quickly as before long it was time to head home. BUT not before we called into Macca's to get a longed-for ice cream. You won't believe it the bloody Machine was broken down. Just our luck. Plan B is now in place, off to Macca's at Morisset a few of us went. OH THAT ICE CREAM TASTED SOOOO SOOOO SWEET. With happiness in our bellies we then set off for the comfort of home. Great day was had by all. Thank you so much to the members and visitors who enjoyed this Club Run with us. Marilyn Vella 7
CRACKNECK LOOKOUT Wednesday 18th September 2019 There were nine cars altogether at The Entrance Bridge. Quite an excellent turnout for such a cold and rainy day. Only Richard and Lorraine were brave enough to bring a historic car! After much discussion and gazing hopefully up at the sky (not at all promising) it was decided that Crackneck Lookout was a definite “no go”, but coffee and morning tea at Budgewoi Park would be dry and a good compromise. We set off in torrential rain which fortunately eased by the time we got to Budgewoi. It was rather nice sitting under cover looking out over the lake. In fact, a few other lakes had formed in the park itself; one under the playground. Kids would have had an absolute ball splashing through the water. After a pleasant hour or so the clouds parted and the sunshine, which I understand had been specially ordered by Marilyn, arrived (if a little late) and it was decided we would stay on for lunch. Our intrepid menfolk braved the weather and were sent hunting and gathering to the fish and chip shop. This arrived without further ado and we all enjoyed a good lunch. More chatter, laughs and jokes shared and what had originally looked as if it might have been “a washout” turned out to be a very lovely day. Ron & Sandra Thomson This friendly pelican decided to join us for lunch at Budgewoi. (Ed.) Broke caravan Wednesday Run – 25th September What a superb day we all had. Everyone partook in the games that were organised. Pancakes thoroughly enjoyed, wood chopping took the puff out of a few, the hand carting of rocks to build a wall around the campfire, the cheering of the spectators while the great games took place and the bike rides some of us had on the bike that Bob found on the junk pile. Lunch was had with lots of stories being told by a few members. Then it was all over and we headed home. Everyone at this run is congratulated for coming together and making this run a great day. NOT TO BE MISSED NEXT YEAR. Marilyn Vella 8
BROKE CAMPING AND CAR CLUB RUN Wednesday 25th September 2019 Our brave pioneering men and women started rolling up in their wagons from Monday 23rd onwards. The usual protective circle formation (gotta watch those Indians) was assumed and the fire, courtesy of Bob O’Brien was set up in the centre. I wasn’t there on the first night, but I believe it was A GREAT FIRE. More wagons arrived on Tuesday, so we had 15 campers in all (plus a ring-in named John who refused to move and is now thinking of joining our club!) It was good to see all the finely tuned athletes practising and honing their skills ready for the events of the following day. Although some late arrivals did park on our golf course which caused Games organisers some consternation! The weather was beautiful, but it didn’t stop us building AN EVEN GREATER FIRE that night. Wednesday morning broke warm and sunny and everyone was up and about early in great anticipation of “The Broke Olympics”. The opening parade arrived mid- morning with three classic cars and various dignitaries in their own vehicles. Twenty-five people in all including visitors and ring-ins. The opening ceremony consisted of pancakes cooked courtesy of Bill and Stella and Ron. Then the Games started in earnest. Mick took out the Putting comp; Sharon won the Bocce. The tension was too great, so we paused for lunch. After lunch, there was a random log balancing display. Will definitely took that one out. Bob also was front of the Peloton in the bike race, but there was an official protest as he owned the only bike. Also, a log carving comp (wood and chain saws courtesy of Mark Dewhurst). No actual winners there but the timber came in handy that night. After some victory celebrations the closing parade set off in their cars for the journey home, and those of us remaining decided to build a BIG fire pit. Rocks were collected and “Brokehenge” was constructed. That night we had AN AMAZING FIRE! Our last day and the weather was still kind to us. Some campers had to leave. Everyone was a bit weary after the strenuous activities of the previous day so a walk to the local store/pub for lunch was in order and ice creams on the way home. That night we were determined to use all our timber. We didn’t quite use it all, but we had A TOTALLY EPIC FIRE!!! Friday...homeward bound. Another successful camping trip with lots of stories shared around the fire. RON & SANDRA THOMSON See next page for photos taken at Broke – courtesy of Dennis Tame 9

This article supplied by Bill Hansell TLCAC Plates Registrar The article pertains to the Victorian Log- Book scheme and the abuse of it. An article I have seen from the CMC states that we have up to 400 rogue clubs in NSW, who are apparently abusing our system. CMC plan to take this up with the RMS later this year. Editor 11
