Welcome to the the Oakleigh Warriors, Melbourne’s WELCOME newest and most exciting rep basketball program in Melbourne . At the Warriors we are committed to your child receiving the highest standard of coaching that we can provide and the opportunity to improve their game dramatically. This document gives you all the information you will require as a member of the Oakleigh Warriors program for the 2015/2016 Championship season in our Junior representative basketball program. This booklet is to give you information about this program and answer some of the more common questions. Please note that the cutoff date for this competition is 31st of December 2016. The Warriors are the representative program of the ABOUT US Oakleigh Basketball Association, we are based out of the amazing new GESAC stadium which is located in Bentleigh. This state of the art three court stadium is now our home court for both matches and currently for training. The Warriors are now going into their sixth year of rep basketball and have had some amazing success in their short time already. With five Victorian Championship teams, multiple metro teams, four metro championships in Metro 1 and 2 and several tournament successes the Warriors have burst onto the rep scene in impressive fashion. With the acquisition of GESAC and the extra depth in players that this will bring, the Warriors are set to build on this early success. The cornerstone of the Warriors however is the basketball program implemented by it’s dedicated coaching staff, this program is second to none in Melbourne and ensures your child has the required individual development opportunities to progress their basketball. WHAT IS REP BASKETBALL? Representative basketball is exactly what it says: your team repre- sents our association against teams who represent their respective associations. These teams include Melbourne Tigers, Sandringham Sabres, Knox Raiders and Eltham Wildcats to name a few. “Victorian Championship” is the highest standard of basketball you can achieve in metropolitan Melbourne at a junior level; the next step is to be se- lected in a state squad. You cannot be selected in a state squad un- less you are playing rep ball. In the past three seasons five teams, our U12 Boys (2011) our U14 Boys (2012 & 2013) and this past season (2015) both our U16 & U8 boys have all made this prestigious grade.
Rep basketball is played on Friday nights across Melbourne, its season is divided into four parts : Pre-season, Grading Phase One, Grading Phase Two and Championship. The season commence in Late October and goes through to September if your team makes fi- nals. Rep basketball, especially at the higher levels, is a fast paced and intense standard of basketball. The VJBL is one of the largest junior basketball competitions in the Southern Hemisphere and it’s standard would match junior competition anywhere in the World. In Australia state teams are drawn form the VJBL ranks and have dominated the National championships for decades now. It is the Warriors intention to become a major force in the VJBL for years to come. WHAT DOES IT COST? The Warriors charge subscription fees of $500.00 which covers both the grading and the championship phase. For families that have more than one child playing Rep ball we discount the fees to $450.00 for a second or third child. Where these fees may be too much for a family to handle at once; payment sched- ules can be arranged. Subscription fees cover training, registrations and tro- phy costs. This fee also covers the cost of team entry for the Dandenong tournament held in late January and must be paid before your child starts training. The Dandenong tournament is compulsory for each of our teams and the fee is compulsory for each of our Rep players. Rep ball games are slightly more expensive than domestic games - most venues charge a spec- tator fee of $3.00 to $3.50 per person, plus a scoresheet fees which can vary from $45.00 to $55.00 per team. To cover this a $10.00 weekly fee is in place, which must be paid to my team’s team manager. This fee covers the costs of the weekly scoresheet fees and helps to cover our coaches. Where a $60.00 + scoresheet fee is charged you will probably find that there isn’t a door entry fee at that stadium. Other costs, which you will have to look at, are the cost of a rep kit which includes the following : Uniforms – Top & Shorts Reversible training/clash tops Hoodie Tacksuit pants Polo Shirt Warriors Kit bags Cost for the whole kit currently is $300.00. Please note these prices are subject to cpi increases and may change in the near future. You will be advised of this over the tryout phase. Where you already have a Warriors uniform through your Warriors domestic team, a price will be calculated for you. Other costs that you may need to budget for are tournaments throughout the year that our teams enter from time to time. You will be given information and details before each of those tourna- ments.
WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME ? · Championship basketball is played on Friday nights, with home games being played at GESAC Sports Center and away games being played across Metropolitan Melbourne. Each team’s team manager and / or coach helps to coordinate transport arrangements. You will be required to train with your championship squad twice a week. You will also be expected to undertake individual training to improve your basic fundamental skills such as shooting. These sessions will be organized by your team’s coach. You will also be expected to participate in a training camp conducted during the last two weeks of the Summer holidays, this culminates with the Dandenong / Eltham junior basketball tournament over the Aus- tralia day weekend. This is the largest junior tournament in Australia and is an ideal preparation for the oncoming season. Each player will be given offensive and defensive plays to learn from their coaches and some written materials to help them with this. We will also be completing personal evaluations of each team member’s strengths, weakness, and areas of our player’s individual game where they will require improvement. Each player will be expected to arrange school work and other commit- ments (chores, jobs, etc.) they have in such a way as to ensure that they will be able to attend training. If you have any problems with this, you will be expected to let your team’s coach know. If we are to compete with other associations, we must commit ourselves to becoming the best we can be. The only way to do this is through spending the necessary time training and learning as much as possible about this game. If players arrange their time properly they should have plenty of time to complete their homework and any other duties their parents might require of them. · WHEN & WHERE IS TRAINING We currently train at GESAC on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sundays. . Train- ing times are scheduled as best as possible to meet coaches and player needs. These times and venues can be found on the Warriors Web page at www.warriorsbasketball.org , Go to this webpage and go to the link for training times. This page will be updated regularly. WHAT DO WE DO NOW? What you need to do now is make a decision whether or not you are prepared to commit yourself to championship basketball and the commitments that will be required of you. You should decide that this is what you really want to do. If you decide to commit yourself then get ready to start training, be prepared to work hard, and to come to training with the right attitude. If you decide that this isn’t for you, then that’s fine, all we ask is that you advise us of this as this may make positions available to other players who we may otherwise not offer a spot to. For current training times please refer to the Warriors website referred to above. It’s at these training sessions that we will pass on information about the forthcoming season and we will also answer any questions that you might have. You will also be required to register on this night and pay your subscription fees or make arrangements to do so If you are interested and would like to confirm things but can’t attend these training sessions then call our Basket- ball Manager Bob Mann on 0468 543 173, or contact him via his e-mail at
WHY SHOULD I PLAY REP BASKETBALL? bob_mann@warriorsbasketball.org Please don’t let the training times stop you from trying out if you are interested as alternative arrangements can be looked at if there are difficulties with this time. To play championship basketball requires a great deal of commitment. There is the commitment to training, to your matches on Friday nights, the traveling to away games and of course the expense of purchasing uni- forms and warm up gear. There are many reasons to not participate, but we be- lieve you should take into consideration the reasons we believe you should participate in our pro- gram. We believe they far outweigh the commitments involved and have listed them below. (1) OPPORTUNITY This is an opportunity for your child to participate in an elite sports program. Your child has been identified as having the potential to play at this level. Opportunities don’t come along that often and when missed they are usually snapped up by somebody else. Don’t miss your chance! (2) THE VALUE OF COMMITMENT Your child gets taught the value of commitment. For our club to achieve success at this level we need everybody involved in club to be committed, from players through to our administration, our parents and our dedicated coaches. Your child will be in an environment that teaches them persistence and commitment. After the initial excitement of being invited to join and receiving their new uniform and tracksuit it is then hard work to achieve success. Every other member of our club knows this and is made aware of it before joining. (3) AN EXTENDED FAMILY The Warriors are truly a family club. It has been founded and administered on this basis. As previ- ously stated all our members are committed to it’s success and therefore become a close-knit group. Many of our junior members have formed close friendships, not just amongst their teams but with players and families from all our teams. Many of our players and indeed their families have formed bonds and ties that will last for years to come. We encourage this and run social events to facilitate it. (4) SUCCESS AGAINST THE ODDS & ACCEPTING A CHALLENGE Compared to other Associations our club and it’s feeder groups are small. We would draw from a pool of players less than a 500 strong, yet many of the Associations we compete against (and beaten) have over six thousand members or more. The Dandenong, Kilsyth and Nunawading Associations have ten thousand or more members. Any success we achieve is against the odds. Due to this our kids develop a self belief and confidence in not only their basketball but in many other aspects of their lives. They learn the valua- ble lessons that: (a) anything is possible if you are prepared to accept a challenge and work towards your goals to conquer that challenge and (b) the best kind of success is the one that is the hardest to achieve. The success that everyone else says you can’t achieve, or is too hard to accomplish is the one that you should always strive for.
WHY SHOULD I PLAY REP BASKETBALL? (CONT’D) (5) WE DO ACHIEVE SUCCESS DESPITE THE ODDS Despite our smaller numbers our club has coaching staff and players that have achieved outstand- ing success over the past three years. Our Basketball Manager, Bob Mann has twenty years of ex- perience and has enjoyed great success at developing smaller clubs into strong medium size pro- gram and he and his coaching group are intent on achieving that and more at the Warriors. Below we list highlights of the Warriors rep program since it started in 2010. Every year our program has achieved something special and each year we have built or improved on the previous year’s performance. In just three years we have achieved much more than clubs with twenty years experience and are determined to continue that record of achievement in coming seasons. Responsibilities & Commitments The Warriors Basketball program has lofty ambitions for what we want to achieve as a club. To achieve that however it is vital that all parts of the club understand their responsibilities. Here we list what is expected of both our players and parents. Player responsibilities / Guidelines Attend two team training sessions per week, preferably with their team, but if this proves impossible to arrange a second session with another Warriors Rep Team. Be punctual in attendance at both training and matches. Be ready to commence training at allocated time. This means arriving at the stadium with adequate time to put on any gear or footwear and to conduct warm-ups and stretches, so teams are ready to commence training at scheduled times. Ensure availability to attend ALL matches except in exceptional circumstances. (Refer to calendar) Arrive at match venues at least 30 minutes beforehand their scheduled match start. Where you cannot attend training and/or matches players need contact their teams coach to advise them of this. To have the best chance possible of gaining selection in a Warriors number one and even a number two squad that they should participate in the Warriors IDP program To attend all matches in proper Warriors attire before, during and after matches. That players in the rep program of the Warriors also need to participate in Warriors domestic compe- titions conducted by the Warriors at GESAC (or any other venue). Parent responsibilities A $10.00 weekly fee is in place, which must be paid to my team’s team manager. This fee covers the costs of the weekly scoresheet fees and helps to cover our coaches. That representative subscription fees need to be paid by due dates listed on registration forms Where this cannot be achieved I/we need to contact the club to make alternative arrangements. Understand that if our child cannot attend the required training sessions that we need to organise makeup sessions to cover for sessions they cannot attend. Understand that where there are issues that these can be taken up in a proper manner through either the Basketball Manager, General Manager and/or a delegated committee person. We need to read and understood the Basketball Victoria code of conduct for parents available from our website and not engage in any behaviour that will bring the Warriors into disrepute. Check the VJBL playing calendar (available via our website) for the 2014-2015 season to ensure your availability throughout the season. In the event that I will be unavailable during any stages of the sea- son we need to advise the Basketball Manager and the team’s coach of this. In the event that you will be unavailable during any stages of the season we need to advise the Team Manager and the team’s coach (where appointed) and the club’s Basketball manager. That is a responsibility of each rep family to contribute to/attend all fund-raising and social events. That if you choose to use basketball as a form of discipline in regards to things such as home duties or school work by removing your child from their basketball, then you also risk your child losing their spot in their team. If all players and parents in our program can meet these responsibilities and commitments, this will our club will operate in a smooth efficient, professional and productive manner. In achieving this it will allow the coaches and teams to concentrate on their basketball objectives of both the individual and team in an unhindered manner. All of this will enable our teams to achieve the best results possible. Please sign and return this document with your registration to indicate you have read and understood the commitments required.
