PRESIDENTS’ REPORT March already, how time flies! We are back into the swing of things post the Xmas hiatus, the Club Runs we have been on so far this year have been very successful with more to come. To date Bill Budd and I have been organising the Runs as we don’t have an Events Director on the Committee; we are very keen to get someone to volunteer for the position, so if you want to help shape the future of your club as a member of the Board of Management let me know. Otherwise, if you think you would like to organise a Mid-week or Sunday Run as a one-off, also let me know, I can give you all the assistance you need. If any member is unable to drive their vehicle to a Run for any reason, and you would like to be involved, let me know and I will arrange a ‘seat’ for you. There are always single occupant vehicles involved and, after the last couple of runs, I’m sure they would be grateful for a competent navigator! The picture above is an example of the motor-cycle I’m restoring, it’s been a year since I started but it doesn’t look anything like that one. Been spending too much time on the Interceptor. Hopefully I’ll make some progress soon. Cars N Coffee events are back up and running with the food-stall ticking along nicely, the proceeds of which almost cover the costs of printing the Crankhandle magazine. We are getting some nice cars being put on show so if you want people to admire your car, bring her to the Club on the 3rd Saturday of each month and enjoy the morning. Thanks to Sohan Parekh for arranging this event. Before you know it the Swap Meet will be upon us (12th July). Pretty soon I will start assembling the roster for helpers to set-up and run the day. This is the most important event for our club so, if you are able, please donate a little of your time to help make it a success. My plans for a mid-week overnight Run have been delayed a bit but I will keep you informed via email on planned dates and activities. I anticipate it will be around the Gympie / Mary Valley regions and possibly a two-night event. Just a final word on this year’s Autorama; it will be a one-day event in either August or September with a possible farewell breakfast on the Sunday morning for our guest-club members who stay overnight. If you have any suggestions which may contribute to the organisation of the event I would love to hear them. Cheers Col Crankhandle News
Editor’s Report We have had bush fires, torrential rain and now Corona virus to interrupt our car events which gives us less stories to put out there. But health and safety do come first. So please do your best to stay healthy and keep those around you healthy. Please be aware that any events that are published in the magazine today may be cancelled at a later date. Anyone with some interesting stories or facts on cars that I can use for the magazine, please email them to me by the first week of May at the latest. Hopefully you will enjoy the stories on the runs we have had and Cars and Coffee over the last two months. Cheerio to all those incapacitated at the moment, we wish you well. Take care. Happy Motoring, Karen Hayes Crankhandle News

26th Feb Sunday Run Bill Budd had put together a great run visiting private car collector Jeff McLintoch’s home. We had a good turnout with 13 members cars and 1 modern leaving the clubhouse at 8.45 making our way to Latimers Crossing Rd and driving through Clagiraba to end up at Smith Park in Canungra for morning tea. Meeting us there was David and Theresa King along with Peter and Laraine Ganderton; it was great to catch up with the latter after a long absence. After morning tea we headed west towards Beaudesert, then turning right on the Beenleigh Road before taking the next turn right and driving through a number of lovely roads in the lower Tamborine area, ending up at a large property, where we were all blown away with the collection of cars, trucks and tractors in a big shed at the back of the property. The vehicles were all well looked after and all in working condition; our members where amazed by them. Jeff lovingly showed off his babies and started a few of them up. A lot of work and money went into this collection. Crankhandle News
On behalf of the club, Bill Budd thanked Jeff for allowing us to view his collection and presented him with our 50th Anniversary Bumper Badge. After we dragged ourselves away, we said goodbye to Jeff and his partner retracing our drive back through Canungra then turned off to drive through Beechmont down to Advancetown where we stopped for lunch at the Advancetown Hotel. Thanks Bill for a lovely day. Crankhandle News
Crams Farm Run Sunday 1st March Nothing like being woken up from a deep sleep at 5 am to go on a picnic in NSW because of the time difference and because someone got the times wrong. We were out the door and down the club house to pick up the lunch gear and out on the road again at 5:30 passing Ben and Thomas Darke in their old Army Ambulance, to meet up with our members at 6:30 at the Chinderah Road House. Then we all would travel together to be at the old Railway site at Murwillumbah to meet up with our host the Tweed Car Club at 7:30 our time (8:30 their time) only to find no one there. We had seven cars leave from the roadhouse, and another two meeting us at the Murwillumbah stop. At nine o’clock NSW time a member from Tweed club with the sign in book arrived and was surprised to see us all there. Gradually the other Tweed members started rolling in for the 9:30 drive to Crams Farm. So, we had a big procession driving through Murwillumbah and down to Kyogle Rd towards Crams Farm. We arrived at the Farm just as the Northern Rivers Restorers Club from the Lismore region arrived. Crankhandle News
Lawrence and Kerena Crediton also arrived not long after taking advantage of a lovely sleep in. We had a good get together chatting with the different clubs and inspecting each other’s cars. The southern clubs started cooking their BBQ lunch at 11 o’clock our time, but by 11:30 smelling the fried onions and meat we were ready to eat, so thanks to our cooks Peter Amey and Kerena we had a lovely lunch of sausage and rissoles with salads that our president had arranged for us. All in all, it was a lovely day even with the early start, our thank go to Col for arranging our lunch, and thanks to the Tweed club for setting everything up. Crankhandle News
Mid Week Run 8th March They had predicted rain, but the morning was lovely and sunny with a cool breeze blowing for todays run. We met at the clubhouse at 8:30 and a visitor to our shores from England happened to be passing and pulled in to look at our cars. He thought it may have been Cars n Coffee. But unfortunately, he would not be in the country when the next event was on. He was pleased to see six of our members British cars and had a good inspection of them. Nine cars left the clubhouse, meeting up with Peter Amey in Fifi (Citroen) and Bill Budd in his Plymouth along the way, before turning off the Hwy to travel along Kennedy drive, crossing Terranora Creek and taking a right onto Dry Dock Rd, then eventually onto Terranora Rd where we had beautiful views of lovely houses and gardens with plants in different hues of purple, as well as the fantastic postcard views over the valleys either side of the road. The recent rains had made everything a lush green. From there we followed the Tweed River on Riverside Dr. through Tumbulgum and down the Tweed Valley Way to have morning tea at Budd Park by the river. All our cars were on display for some enthusiast who had passed by. After morning tea, Wayne Robson waved us off in his Mercedes as he had other engagements. The rest of us started Crankhandle News
our second leg of the drive down through Murwillumbah along the Kyogle Rd turning off onto Bakers Road following the Tweed River back to the coast. We had picture perfect views overlooking the valleys, the country smell from the cows driving through Stokers Siding, then rainforest on the small narrow winding roads. We worked our way back to Tweed Valley Way stopping on Quarry Rd for stragglers to catch up, only to find out that half the cars had gone straight on to the Leagues club. The remaining four cars turned east onto Clothiers Creek Rd then Eviron Rd. Driving along the hill tops overlooking the M1, another breathtaking winding scenic road. We ended up on Cudgen Rd and driving to the Cudgen Leagues Club for lunch. Even though it was a long run, it is one of the most beautiful runs we have done with sunny skies and lush green fields to see. Who can drive all their customers away and still make money? Taxi drivers. Crankhandle News
Meet “Viktoria”. A couple of our newest members are Bede and June Maynard with their 1974 Volvo 164E “Viktoria” which you may have seen around at a number of the “Cars n Coffee” events since September 2017. Bede bought Viktoria in August 2017 from an owner in Victoria. Since then he has been having to do a lot of work in restoring her from the tyres up. With some modifications along the way and installing an air-conditioner for our Qld climate which also gave never-ending troubles. In November 2019 Bede tried to take Viktoria to a Bathurst Meet only to have several mishaps on the way as a result they never made it to Bathurst. The main fault was the electronic ignition which has been removed and she’s back to having points. The transmission cooler has been relocated to behind the front spoiler to aid air flow through the cooling system. Another new cap for the coolant bottle has been tested and is closer to the 10psi required. The old (new) one was failing at 5psi. Viktoria has had a lot of work done on her over the last two years, last being in Dec 2019 the ignition coil burnt out the condenser in the distributor, apparently the ignition coil should have been swapped with a non-electronic one when the they put the points in. Bede hopes this is the end of the run of bad luck with Viktoria. You can follow his story on facebook “Oz Volvo”. Crankhandle News

Cars N’ Coffee January 2020 The first meet for the new decade and 2020 was a thorough wash out. The heavens opened up and did not close for a long long time leaving most of the Gold Coast under water. We had a glimpse of Venice right here in Mudgeeraba! At least the rain went to parched parts and to bush fire ravaged regions giving much reprieve to the highly stretched RFS crews and plenty of relief to many who reside in the areas affected. FEBRUARY This meet was also not going to happen with it being cancelled two days prior and re-instated just 16 hours before hand. All this because it was raining constantly for the whole week and the Bureau promised another ten days of the wet stuff, and we all know the wet stuff and classic autos just don’t go together. However, just the day before, the skies were bright blue with all the grey clouds having floated away. Anyway, it was a wonderful meet considering the extremely short notice. The coveted Car of the Meet went to a beautiful 1972 Plymouth Barracuda in bright Yellow. It was beautiful! The two that stood out were the Ferrari 328GTS and its counterpart Ferrari 308GTS. The 308 being the exact model which Tom Selleck drove in the Crankhandle News
Magnum PI series, an interesting fact, Tom Selleck was too tall for the car and drove it by looking over the windscreen, so to counter this, the producers removed the seat padding and rails and bolted the seat to the floor as far back as they could, and it only just fitted! Another little stunner was the Isuzu Bellett. I had never seen one before and was really enamoured with it. The Isuzu was in fantastic condition and was vying for top position with the overall winner, the Plymouth, but boy it sure was a close second. From Japanese Classics, we transition to Swedish Future Classics. This being the Volvo V40 Polstar World Rally Championship car. This is a genuine rocket and would give most other exotics a run for their money. This particular example was finished in Polstar Blue which is the trademark colours of the Volvo Rally Team. This colour is no longer offered in the Volvo range which makes this example all the more special. Crankhandle News
Next comes the mighty Honda NSX. Who can go past this Japanese Supercar of the 90’s. Honda set out to build a supercar which would rival any exotic but be cheap to maintain and be reliable, i.e. like a Honda, and they came up with this. At time of launch, plenty of other sports car manufacturers were quivering and they had to “up their game” just to stay competitive. This was obviously for the better, because it’s advanced car technology for all of us to enjoy. Hope to see you all for another awesome morning. URGENT: HELP REQUIRED FOR SUPPERS – MAY, JUNE AND JULY MEETINGS Richard and I will be overseas awaiting the arrival of our second grandson. I will be back on deck in August. What is required: Serving tea and coffee to the members Doing the supper: ie sandwiches, cake and something hot e.g. sausage rolls, pies, etc. Cleaning up afterwards. This is by no means a big job. If you can help please contact: 0411 092561 or email butcherbrownfamily@bigpond.com Cheers Leonie Answer: TRABANT 6015. The Trabant 601 series was a modern automobile when introduced in 1963 in East Germany, with 150 pre-production examples. Originally, production was only planned to run from 1967 to 1971, but instead continued until 1990. The original engine was only 17 kW (23 hp), but in 1969, a new version was offered with a 19.1 kW (26 hp) engine. Its purpose was to provide a cheap but still reliable car that was very affordable and also easy to repair and maintain. Still, it was at the time of its release, rather modern in many ways, with front wheel drive, a low maintenance engine, unitary construction, composite bodywork and independent suspension all around.
