KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 With the COVID guidelines easing, we will return to our lunch meetings at the Moose Lodge at 12:00 pm on April 7th. For those individuals not comfortable meeting face-to-face, we also plan on setting up a Zoom conference call. Indoor gatherings are limited to 50 people, so we will ask for reservations before each Wednesday meeting to ensure we don’t go over the limit. Same as before, we will also be required to have a temperature taken and be asked about our physical health. The guide is….if you don’t feel well— STAY HOME and ZOOM in. I know everyone is looking forward to returning to a bit of nor- malcy, we just want to make sure everyone is safe. See you on April 7th. 1
KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 PRESIDENT’S CORNER TJ O’CONNOR Ah, springtime . . . sort of! It’s now April and spring is visiting us every few days. And while I’m more of an October kinda guy, I do love this time of year nearly as much. This year, it has brought us some pretty crazy days, though. Right? First, COVID is seemingly settling a little as the vaccines roll out. I’m pleased to see many of our members getting theirs. KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 PRESIDENT’S CORNER (Continued from page 2) The best news so far is that beginning April 7th, we will return to in-person meetings at the Moose Lodge in Old Town. Yes … you’ll actually be in person with me! How lucky you are, I know. Of course, we will enforce the appropriate social distancing, mask use, and temperature checks. Since our Zoom meeting participation grew from a dozen or so to sometimes forty, we’ll try to use Zoom for those still wishing to stay home. No worries. We will accommodate all we can. And hey, if John Conrad can dial into Zoom, so can you! Spring usually means the runup to Pancake Day. We have tentatively scheduled May 22nd —an unusual schedule for us—but I’m hopeful we’ll pull off another drive-thru like we did last fall. The governor has eased restrictions a little and we’re currently await- ing the War Memorial Building’s decision on our event. Fingers crossed! Still, even with COVID, we have been incredibly busy this year. We have launched the new Kiwanis Club of Winchester Foundation Inc., picked up several new members, and within the next couple weeks will christen a rejuvenated Circle K Club at Shenandoah University. Not a bad year all in all. As we look forward to the next six months of this year’s club activities, I want us to fo- cus on some important things. I want us all to have our eye on our members. We’ve done nearly everything I set out as goals for this year. Now, our focus has to be with- in. We need to recapture our membership and bring them back to the meetings. We need to re-engage everyone and prepare to receive more requests for funding and ser- vice projects. And above all, we need to be looking to increase our membership even more—with a focus on younger, more diverse backgrounds—to grow and sustain our club for the future. It’s time to start thinking of our future in post-COVID terms. That means thinking of our club in new ways and seeking alternate sources of additional revenue beyond our Pancake Days. We must engage new members and find new service projects and new ways to energize our roles in the club. And above all, growing our abilities to support our community aside from our current quiver of funding and projects. Let’s find some new, fun projects to involve ourselves. Nothing creates member apathy more than boredom and doing “the same old stuff.” Yes, Pat Snapp, that might even mean a bingo night! Aghast, did I say that out loud? So be germinating new ideas, be looking for new members, and be ready for whatever post-COVID brings us. I am! All be safe and well. -Tj 3

KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 Kiwanis Summer 2021 Pancake Day Dear Fellow Members of the Kiwanis Club of Winchester, The stars are starting to align, and it appears that our Kiwanis Club will get the green light to conduct another Drive-Thru Pancake Day on May 22, 2021. We are almost finished with the discussions with our friends at Jim Barnett Park and they are supportive of our event. Now, all we need is you and a bunch of customers. Most of our members participated in the fall and the consensus was that it was fun, different, not as much work, and we received a cheerful ovation from our customers for returning to a level of normalcy through the Kiwanis Pancake Day. Yes, I said May 22nd which is a little over 50 days. We had no idea when some of the restrictions would be lifted, so we could not begin planning until recently, and we be- lieve that it would be unwise to schedule the Pancake Day after vacations begins. As it is, we will not have the benefit of the SU athletic teams because most will have depart- ed for the summer break. Please, Please, Please! Make a commitment to get involved. By now everyone is aware of the many tasks that we need to staff. We will set-up and cut sausage on Friday May 21st, and then, bright and early on Saturday, we will fire up the grills and ovens to cook the pancakes and sausage. Since it is a drive-thru there will not be table service, coffee or drinks. We will still have to package the food and deliver it to the vehicles. If you know what you want to do to help, please send me an email. If you want to volun- teer but don’t know the specifics, please let me know and I’ll make a suggestion. We ask that you work an entire shift, so we don’t have fragments of a shift that need to be filled. Most shifts are four hours or less, so it is not much of a hardship. We do have some sitting positions to accommodate folks that have trouble standing. A master list of the shift times and tasks will be sent to you. A definition of each task will be sent early next week, although most of you know what it’s about already. There are certain shifts, and jobs that are popular, but we cannot have every- one work the first shift. It’s first come, first served and if that shift is full we ask that you sign-up for a shift that has vacancies. Please call me at 540-931- 1487 or email jtconrad1004h@gmail.com to sign up for a shift or have your questions answered. The non-profits our club helps each year are counting on us to make this Pancake Day a success. We’ve done it before and I am confident we will do so, again. Thanks in ad- vance for your participation. -John Conrad 5
KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 Kiwanis 2021 Officer and Board Elections Candidate Announcement It’s that time again. Our annual club elections will begin April 1st with weekly an- nouncements on the slate of candidates for five key leadership positions in our club—a new vice president to go through the chairs and four new members of our board. I will announce the election and slate weekly for three weeks at the lunch meetings and via email. The election will be held April 21st, with both an in-person vote at the Wednesday lunch meeting, and an electronic email vote to ensure we involve as many members as possible. The results must be certified to Capital District and KI by early May. So far, the slate of officers/directors is: Vice President – John Conrad Four Board Seats - Freda Roberson, Randy Zook, Reid Hoak, Barry Swears, and Ernie Lightfoot Yes, there are more candidates than seats, but it is an election! So, bring on the candi- dates and nominations! If you wish to run for one of these offices or to nominate someone else, please contact me via pres@kcow.org and tj@tjoconnor.com Warning: I have contacted Facebook and other social media platforms to ensure there is no Internet election tampering. I have also called other clubs for help in providing members to monitor our polls to ensure no ballet box stuffing. Lastly, Brenda Dodd and Ginny Grant will be on call to deal with potential insurrections (tell me you’re not scared)! No fake news. No tampering. No coups. So, get ready. Get set . . . you’re only six months away from firing me! -Tj 6
KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 Bird Housing Project in Jim Barnett Park Doug Butler and Barry Swears completed the first in a series of bird "homes" in the Kiwanis Area of Jim Barnett Park. The bird houses are de- signed to attract bluebirds, tree swallows, nuthatches, titmice, and chicka- dees. A wonderful feature of these new houses is having a removable front section so the houses can be cleaned each year. Members from the three Kiwanis Clubs - Winchester, Blue Ridge and Old Town, are collaborating on this project. Highway Cleanup on U.S. Highway 50 One of our service projects includes cleaning along Highway 50 twice a year. We will be holding our spring cleanup on Satur- day, May 1st. Volunteers will meet at 8:00 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church on Highway 50. Contact Tim Anderson if you would like to be a volunteer, there will be a maximum of 12 volunteers. 7
KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 SPOTLIGHT ON OUR SPOTLIGHT ON MEMBERS OUR MEMBERS A pril’s Featured Kiwanian: Kay Anderson Birthplace - Winchester, VA Family - Kay is the oldest of four children born to James “Bubby” Fletcher and Patty Fletcher. Kay and her husband Scott have two grown, married children. Their son Kevin is a pastor and lives with his family – wife, Jackie and children Gideon (9) and Josiah (6) in Gainesville, FL. Their daughter Kristen is a pediatric travel nurse and lives with her family – husband, Danny and stepchildren Ashley and Owen in London, England. Kristen is pregnant with her first child due in August. Kay and Scott al- so have a cute four-year old border collie mix named Angel. Favorite book - Kay enjoys reading anything written by the Women of Faith motivational speakers Favorite movie - It’s a Wonderful Life is Kay’s favorite movie but she also loves comedies Best advice - “Forgive and let go.” and “Don’t make decisions when you’re angry.” Favorite quote - “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” - Benjamin Franklin Most interesting place visited - Kay went to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2010 to attend their ex- change daughter’s graduation from college. There, she met the graduate’s brother and she and Scott had him as their exchange son in 2016. Sao Paulo is so overpopulated with so many people and vehicles on the road. It’s a beautiful city with many beautiful old buildings/ architecture and parks. This was a really nice place for Kay to visit, but she would not want to live there. Even though the housing they stayed in was a short distance from most of the sites they visited, it took three to four times longer to get there due to the traffic. Definitely not a forever place to live for Kay. Kay also went on a southern U.S. cross-country trip in October 2019. This was her first time seeing the Grand Canyon, which was the highlight of her trip. She loved the gorgeous stark scenery in Sedona, AZ and visited the stunning Biltmore estate in Asheville, NC when they were decorating for Christmas. She is hoping to do a northern adventure when she retires. (Continued on next page) 8
KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 SPOTLIGHT ON OUR SPOTLIGHT ON MEMBERS OUR MEMBERS (Continued from previous page) Career/favorite job - Kay has been in banking for almost 43 years and has seen a lot of changes. When she started in 1978, banking was much simpler than today. The bank re- quired minimal paperwork for loans or to open an account. Kay learned to make payments and deposits on an old posting machine, manually figuring the interest due. Now, everything is computerized/electronic, which is great, except she feels that banking has lost much of that personal touch. In her early years of banking, Kay knew most of the customers by name, because she saw them at least once a week. Now most of the banking takes place online, through phone calls or emails and she doesn’t get to see the customers. Accomplishments - Kay is very proud of the family she raised and loves being a grandma. In addition to Kiwanis, Kay is an active volunteer with other community organizations. She is on the advisory board of the Salvation Army and is secretary of the Woodlawn Cemetery As- sociation. In the past, she has volunteered with the Boy Scouts, United Way Day of Caring, Bright Futures, has helped with several Salvation Army annual projects and with a number of church and fire company events. What is Unique About You? Kay is a Christmas tree fanatic. She loves Christmas and several years ago, she put up three trees, instead of one. The next year it was four and now she puts up 18 full size trees, plus several small ones. Each tree has a theme (angels, Nor- man Rockwell ornaments, Apple Blossom, snowmen, etc.). In order to get all of the trees up and decorated, she has to start around Thanksgiving and finishes about two weeks before Christmas. Kay then leaves them up until mid-January (or beyond). KIWANIS KOURIER KIWANIS CLUB OF WINCHESTER, VA * Serving the Winchester/Frederick County Community APRIL 2021 SPOTLIGHT ON OUR SPOTLIGHT ON MEMBERS OUR MEMBERS (Continued from previous page) Why you joined Kiwanis - Kay has always wanted to be involved in community activities and be a part of an organization that gives back. She had attended numerous Pancake Days over the years, but never really thought about the organization that put it on. When she started working for the Bank of Clarke County in 2008, former member Kaley Crosen invited her to a attend a club meeting with her. Kaley had taken another position at the bank and was going to be in their Berryville branch, so she wanted to know if Kay would like to take her place in Kiwanis and represent the bank. Kay came to a couple of more meetings and learned more about what Kiwanis does and decided to join the club in May 2008. Kay feels that this has been one of the best decisions of her life. She loves being involved on different committees, and is thankful to Ginny Grant for asking her to co-chair the Annual Children’s Christmas Party with her. This is Kay’s favorite Kiwanis event because it has such a huge im- pact on children who have so little. She is grateful to the Bank of Clarke County for allowing her to be involved in Kiwanis and supporting her and the club. Angel, Kay’s sweet border Son Kevin and family on their collie mix new home site in Florida Kiwanis Club of Winchester is successful because of its many volunteer members who give so freely of their time and effort. THANK YOU FOR BEING A MEMBER OF KIWANIS CLUB, KAY! 10
