MWC 2019 REPORT 02 Marcus Irwin Head of Solution Design and Innovation A shared passion for connected cars? Now it may be my own passion for cars, however I certainly saw an increased presence and ‘buzz’ this year from vehicle manufacturers. BMW and Audi being just two examples, but all keen to show their path to automation and remote analytical outputs. As such there were plenty of VR experiences on self-drive cars and subsequent discussions on 5G assisted driving. In previous years the connected car as a concept was driven by IoT but with 5G on the horizon, many stands were focusing their vendor pitches on 5G messaging and as such, there were lots of demos of low latency and high-bandwidth, with a few stand outs with robotic band and manufacture robot demonstrations. Another key thread for me was automation of quality customer experience solutions, self-serve and self-help applications. All of which are becoming very smooth, cost and resource effective and have a huge impact on improving customer satisfaction. Data of course is key to all of this and my overall takeout would be that the intelligent use of data ran through all topics, and with increasing innovation and bandwidth from our fixed and mobile networks, clever data shows no signs of slowing down...and that people like connected cars. MWC 2019 REPORT 03 Barna Kutvolgyi Managing Director, Channel Islands The precision of data MWC was a sensory overload of 5G, IoT, and Smart community technology. But beneath the flashy designs, lies the technical journey from multiple connected devices to the absolute precision of data, and what these new networks bring to our lives. NTT Docomo presented a compelling user case for a huge volume of data transmissions and low latency; their impressive stage set showed a real-time band play with one member being streamed as a hologram over 5G. That’s musical precision! Graphene Flagship, was also at the show and advancements in sensor capability were evident. What this does for the world, is opens up a whole new range of precision, detection and data analytics for health, smart home or environmental use. On a more serious note, the benefits of the precise data can save lives. Our own IoT SIMs have the benefit of 700+ roaming partners and as such will always land on the strongest network, that’s why we have them in eHealth devices, like heart rate monitors as far as Canada and over 1.6 million SIMs being used globally. But let’s fast forward to 5G and what MWC did for us, was allow a taster of what is to come. Our own cloud partner Dimension Data with their global parent NTT for example, were showcasing the technical accuracies that enable performing remote brain surgery. So for all the negativity around cost and investment, this is the future and why as technology leaders we continue to strive for the very best for our customers. So whilst 5G development, 5G antennas, 5G backbone infrastructure, 5G core network architecture, etc. etc dominates the news, it’s simply the connectivity mechanism to connect the entire world to the benefits that Photos: Graphene Flagship (Top), precise data can bring to all our lives. and Cyber Jam Session by NTT Domoco (Bottom) @jt_business JT Group Limited
MWC 2019 REPORT 04 Darren Vibert Commercial Development Officer The Smartphone is reborn Samsung wowed us with its foldable Galaxy Fold and four new Galaxy S10 phones before MWC had even begun. However as predicted, Samsung wasn’t alone on the foldable stage. Huawei, the world's second largest smartphone maker behind Samsung, announced its first ever foldable phone, the Huawei Mate X. This year’s MWC had a device energy that we haven’t seen in a few years, an excitement driven in my opinion by three extremely powerful trends that have the potential to define a decade of mobile phones; • Foldable designs • 5G data speeds • Amazingly complex photography The latter down to a plethora of rear cameras; the Nokia 9 PureView for example, has five rear lenses. As sales slow down across the entire smartphone world, the products and news announced at MWC will, I believe, revitalise one of the fastest moving industries on the planet. MWC 2019 REPORT 05 Clare Messenger Head of Fraud Protection Services Digital Identity Services Protecting Customers With data breaches and online fraud on the increase worldwide, it wasn’t a surprise to see that there was a particular focus at this year's MWC on the growth and cost of m-commerce fraud. In particular, the imminent arrival of PSD2 regulation; the new recommendations from the gambling commission to protect children. Industries everywhere are coming under pressure to provide strong and reliable identity services that can assist with payment authorisation; proving identity and reducing fraud. As such the event displayed an emergence of young, innovative companies offering fraud protection and identity solutions with AI playing a prominent role. It will be interesting to see which of these companies start to thrive in such a competitive area. It was also great to see how the GSMA’s Mobile Connect programme continues to evolve and grow. MC services are now available via 70 operators in 40 markets. There is an interesting collaboration in the US called Project Verify, with the four largest operator networks providing identity data attributes. Such collaborations are rare between operators but actually greater unity is needed globally if these data services are to be accessed easily and efficiently by enterprises. Finally, it’s clear to see that mobile operator data will continue to be valuable to support the roll out of more sophisticated communication channels and content sites via 5G. Legislation will become tougher to protect consumers against malicious content and to ensure targeted advertising is relevant, accurate and safe. Operators globally are taking this very seriously and they will need to do everything they can to help protect their customers and to support best digital practices. MWC 2019 REPORT 06 Paul Taylor Managing Director, JT Guernsey, and SVP JT EMEA IoE — The Internet of Everything Whilst 5G stole the showcase market share, the IoT revolution, once a ‘trend’ is very much now positively embedded into society. Conversations around IoT have been much more widely accepted and changes within the market have already been seen. What MWC showed us is (that much like JT), tech companies are joining up to create IoT ecosystems with other partners and businesses to deliver superior products and services in the IoT space. These innovative partnerships lead to a lot of real discussions around eSIM, eUICC and bootstrap and the benefits remotely managed devices brings. The launch of our own eUICC SIM solution, with partner 1oT was launched at MWC this year and you’ll start to see much more in this space. The drive of such investment is largely in part due to the design, interest and adoption of a plethora of devices, gadgets and gizmos and what MWC did was showcase the breadth of such – The Internet of (quite literally) Everything. IoT showcases at MWC ranged from serious life saving functionalities to the utterly bizarre – the breadth was enormous. A live showcase from NimbeLink (Connected Honeybees), MediaTek (AI Robot that tracks human poses and movement) to the LoRa connect mousetraps, certainly captured the attention of many. Regardless of the showcase, device or purpose, what MWC showed us is that with the right connectivity and IoT SIM the future possibilities are endless, Photos: Xiaomi Ninebot Balance Scooter Kart Conversion (Top), exciting and very, very real. MWC 2019 REPORT 07 Jon Collinson The importance of security in a Head of Product smart world Development 5G once again stole the limelight with talk of faster and more reliable connections. Not just increased speeds for your smartphone but additional capacity to allow us to connect a wide variety of new devices and enable all kinds of new applications, many of which were on display. But alongside the truly intelligent (and sometimes completely wacky) showcases, there were several underlying serious messages, such as questions about the economics of the whole venture and, most interesting for me, of security, both from an operator perspective and a customer education point of view. As new connections permeate every aspect of our lives, how can the public at large be reassured that the service is reliable and safe? Whether your car is being controlled in real time over a 5G network or a surgeon is remotely conducting brain surgery (both showcased), the implications of a system or security failure become a lot more worrying and potentially catastrophic. The entertainment and convenience benefits of IoT gadgets in the past might have overshadowed some of the potential risks of data breach or device hacking, but the stakes are now so much higher. With new connection options and the move of previously discreet services to the common world of IP, 5G contributes an additional level of complexity to an already crowded environment, where there are opportunities for hackers and fraud. Operators and the global tech community need to get together to share best practice and agree real actions to address critical security challenges as well as discuss how we can help increase awareness and real security for all users. You’ll see an increase in investment in security related products: they may not be ‘sexy’ but will help customers feel safer in an increasingly smart world. MWC 2019 REPORT 08 Ian Lavigne Head of Product, JT International 5G and IoT: friends or foes? MWC brought with it the usual high energy, sore feet and truly awe-inspiring concepts this year. Unsurprisingly, 5G has emerged at large across the whole event, pipping IoT as the most talked about trend of the future. Its use cases vary wildly, from humanoid robots that will revolutionise our homes and offices, to flying taxis akin to overgrown drones. Our partner ARM, was also sporting a rather lovely electric Audi concept car to be run off the future network. The clear message in this space was 5G is real, it’s coming, and it’s going to have a profound impact on the mobile ecosystem that we’ve come to enjoy so much. IoT has far from fallen-off the radar though; it’s still very much a key message, but pleasingly one that has matured from hype to the practical realities of implementation and delivering value. Messaging around benefit realisation and affordability for the full range of devices being showcased was certainly on the rise too. Security has been a key theme this year in the IoT space, perhaps driven in part by the undercurrent of geopolitical uncertainty, but with a focus on addressing the individual and corporate risks presented by those trillion connected devices. What hasn’t been so clear is the expected relationship between 5G and IoT - complimentary technologies or uncomfortable bedfellows? Perhaps too soon to tell but my predicted trend for next year’s MWC To find out how JT's IoT SIMs power over 1.6m connected devices across the globe, visit: www.jtglobal.com/IoT Photos: PB 18 e-tron by Audi (Top), and 5G Aerial Taxi by Ooredoo (Bottom) @jt_business JT Group Limited
MWC 2019 REPORT 09 Thierry Berthouloux CTIO Revolutionary uniformity In between the sights of foldable phones, connected cars and AI robots offering free hugs, I spent a large part of my time in Barcelona at the key note speaker sessions. The benefit from hearing from industry peers on a global scale not only gives us the foresight of future trends, opportunities and challenges, but also the reassurance that, as a small state operator, JT are punching well above their weight. I heard from some of the big players across the mobile industry; Telefonica, GSMA, Singtel, Vodaphone, Orange, EE and Korean Telcom to name but a few. All facing the same challenges and many discussing the same opportunities. One key stat that runs the trend throughout is the expected exponential growth of data use - 75 billion connected devices by 2025, with data usage on track to grow 400% in the same period (whilst data revenue grows by just 1%). 5G is on everyone’s agenda and rightly so, and whilst all operators showcase the tech gadgets that excite and lure the masses, the truth is these user cases are still ideas for the future – but we do see Holograms, AR, VR, 4K/8K and new B2B services leading the next era of mobile technology. However, with data revenue decreasing, it is key for operators to explore the options outside of connectivity. The connectivity is the enabler but the innovative outputs – the automation, the entertainment, the analytics, the digital marketing, IoT — the smart everything is the real game changer. The challenge for us all now is driving growth in operational excellence, R&D and innovation (opex) whilst also growing data revenue in such a challenging market. For the majority of our combined customers globally, the benefits (or excitement) of 5G won’t be realised until well after it’s been launched, but then we look back to the launch of FTTH or as far back as 3G or even the introductory 2Mb fixed broadband and the truth is you really don’t know what you need until it gets here. The truth is, the biggest revolutions in history are only noticeable in hindsight. Photos: Vive Reality by HTC (Top), and Roboy Junior (Bottom) @jt_business JT Group Limited
MWC 2019 REPORT 10 Kuba Rusztowicz Head of Messaging and Roaming Services A Banquet of Intelligent Connectivity MWC is the ‘must be at’ event in the mobile industry, and this year it didn’t disappoint. Not only because we have a chance to grow relationships with our key strategic customers, suppliers or new prospects, but also because it is a "banquet" full of mobile trends, innovations and disruptive technologies that can inspire every gadget fan or mobile industry professional. Personally, I also find it the most entertaining event of the year. This year, round every corner and on every stand, it was blatant to see that the world is entering a new era; Intelligent Connectivity. 5G, IoT or intelligent engagement channels like messaging bots were with us in every hall. My observation is that we see two types of intelligent connectivity paths. One is the M2M path where machines are intelligently connected with each other to serve consumers and the second one is where a machine or application is intelligently making and holding a conversation directly with the customer, and it’s no longer an ideal, this is real. I was delighted to see the evolution of how messaging can authorise, engage and intelligently connect with devices or consumers. With over 700 roaming agreements, more than 300 A2P SMS direct connectivity agreements and a leading Nomad platform, MWC brought both the encouragement and excitement that we (JT) have a unique position in the value chain to play in today’s well connected world.
