Many waters cannot quench love, nor the floods drown it. And if one were to give all the possessions of his house for love, it would utterly be despised. CHRISTOPHER (Text and Tune are printed on page 8) *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - from A Brief Statement of Faith We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God’s commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God’s condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still. LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND DEDICATION ACTS OF GIVING AND RECEIVING OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS MUSIC AT THE OFFERTORY The Greatest of These Is Love Daniel Moe (b. 1926) Polly Butler Cornelius, soprano If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong, or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, but have not love, I am nothing. If I have faith to remove the mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way, love does not rejoice in the wrong, but rejoices in the right.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, love never ends. Love is patient and kind and true. Love never ends. -1 Corinthians 13 *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow OLD HUNDREDTH B EA RING TH E W ORD IN TO THE W OR L D God blesses and *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION sends us in mission to the *CONGREGATIONAL HYMN – NO. 498 world. Lenten Quiet Time Meditations – Mondays during Lent Guided meditations to give space and form for quiet contemplation using the spiritual practices of Lectio Divina and Visio Divina will be emailed on Mondays and posted on the church website and Facebook page. Meditation on Word and Music – Wednesdays during Lent beginning February 24 These mid-week meditations, led by the pastoral staff and musicians, include scripture, poetry, prayer and music, helping us journey through Lent in anticipation of Easter and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, Son of God. Meditations will be emailed and posted on the church website and Facebook page. The Seven Last Words: The Understanding Christ During Lent this year, our worship services will be focusing on “The Seven Last Words” that Jesus spoke from the cross. No one Gospel portrays all seven last words, but they are compiled from a combination of reports made by all four of the Gospel writers. Last words are often the most poignant and significant words that one speaks before crossing in spirit from this side to the next. The same seems to be true of Jesus. During this series, your staff is urging you to read The Hope of Glory: Reflections on the Last Words of Jesus from the Cross. It was written by Jon Meacham, a Pulitz- er Prize-winning biographer and former Episcopal vestry member in the St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue and of Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City. If you are really ambitious, then pick up James Martin’s Seven Last Words: An Invitation to a Deeper Friend- ship with Jesus. Martin is a Jesuit priest and author of the book, Jesus: A Pilgrimage, that I urge all pilgrims to Jordan and Israel to read. He is intelligent, well studied, and a gifted writer. The following description of each word and the above title come from his book.
