December/January 2021 Bramhope Methodist Church, Eastgate, Leeds LS16 9AA www.bramhopemethodist.org.uk Minister: Rev Roger Smith email: roger.smith@methodist.org.uk Tel: 01943 874 735 Dear Friends BREAKING NEWS: Christmas isn’t cancelled! As I write this, none of us can know what churches will be allowed to do this Christmas. We very much hope that the services listed here will go ahead but we can’t be sure. However, we can be sure that love came down at Christmas and that love was seen in Jesus. It’s so hard not knowing whether families can get together and friends meet up but whatever happens this is true: God’s love is born in our hearts, seen in the baby in the manger, heard in Christmas carols, experienced all around the world. The love of Christmas cannot be cancelled. Roger Love came down at Christmas, Worship we the Godhead, Love all lovely, Love divine; Love incarnate, Love divine; Love was born at Christmas, worship we our Jesus: star and angels gave the sign. but wherewith for sacred sign? Love shall be our token, love be yours and love be mine, love to God and all the world, love for plea and gift and sign. Christina Georgina Rossetti 1

TREASURER’S INTERIM REPORT Accounts The averaged weekly collections for the period to October are: 2019 2020 Envelopes, Cash and Standing Orders £450 £447 The level of Giving has generally been maintained as the Congregation generally has made their collections notwithstanding the problems created by Covid. Thank you all for this generosity and effort. Some Members have transferred their Giving to standing order which is much appreciated. To date Income is down £4,000 compared to the previous year due to loss of rental income, plant sale income, dancing, quiz and coffee shop. We are grateful for the continuing support of a local charity. Expenses are down £2,000 on last year with savings in plant sale costs and offset against salary by furloughing Michael. We will be able to continue taking advantage of The Government’s flexible furloughing scheme while Michael is not required to fulfil his normal hours of working. This enables us to partially offset his salary possibly into March when the scheme is due to end. Overall this gives a shortfall for the 2 months of £2,000 when comparing with last year. Coming Year As I reported in the August/September Messenger the first period of Covid lockdown was significantly better than expected. The current period of lockdown and the resulting uncertainties will be more difficult with the Film Club and Coffee Shop on indefinite hold. Although lettings restarted to a large extent in October they have again been closed for at least a month. Special Events are in limbo and the Spring Plant Sale is not a certainty. The 3 Tier system will presumably continue to operate and the level we return to will impact on what activities are allowed. Meanwhile winter is coming and heating costs will still occur although they will be monitored to ensure usage is kept to a minimum. I repeat that Continued Giving cannot be stressed too much. Please continue to Give in the normal way and if possible transfer cash and funds to me or any of the Stewards who will arrange to pass on to me. Norman Sykes Honorary Treasurer 3
Church Family News Ewart Lewis 27th October 1926 - 18th October 2020 Ewart was a faithful member of our Church for many years: a kind, gentle man who possessed a great Christian faith. He was a very much loved member of our church family and an example to us all of how to live a Christian life. He possessed a non-judgemental attitude and was a caring, thoughtful man who was always aware of the needs of others and always had time to listen. We will miss the gentle and quiet way he lived his faith. He dedicated so much of his life to our church in so many different ways and helped to establish much of the Church’s outreach into the village. He worked tirelessly to support many organisations in Bramhope. In the early 1990’s Ewart, along with his late wife Alma, set up our annual plant sales. He also hosted the weekly house group, at which many theological discussions took place. For many years he led the Church’s Prayer Chain which was set up to pray for those in need. Ewart had a great empathy for the elderly and in conjunction with OPAL, helped to establish, “Bramhope Meeting Point” at our church, where the over 60’s could meet together for an afternoon of fellowship, fun and a cuppa. In recognition of his tireless works for Bramhope, Ewart was very proud to be invited to one of the Queen’s Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace. We shall miss him greatly, Ewart will leave a big hole in the life of the village and also our Church. It is sad that, because of Covid 19, many could not attend his funeral which was held on the 13th November 2020, but it is hoped that a Memorial Service for him will take place in the future. Betty & Jack Foster and Catherine Birkby It is with great sadness we report the death of Gill Whittington on Sunday 15th November. Gill had been a long standing member of our church, together with her husband Brian, a member of the Ladies’ Thursday Group and a regular at Tuesday Coffee Shop. Her funeral will be held in our Church on Friday 4th December. BIRTHDAY blessings and CONGRATULATIONS to Susan Ward who celebrates a milestone birthday in January 4

Hidden Homeless Appeal Ongoing Tonia is always grateful for any monetary donations or donations of any of the following items for the Hidden Homeless Outreach Team to distribute: Sleeping bags/warm blankets/mens’ jogging bottoms/socks/ underwear/fleece/jackets/coats....see the Amazon wish list link below. 'Hidden Homeless' was set up originally to help people who sleep rough outside the City Centre - some groups had made small camps. Most of these have luckily been housed now but, as we anticipated, there are people who have been made unemployed due to Lockdown, and also people with mental health problems who haven't coped during lockdown. Although the services are there, as well as other Outreach groups who are out most nights, helping to find safe places for them, there are only so many accommodation places available. We are now having to go into the City Centre to feed people and this will only worsen over time. If you would like to help but don't have any clothes to donate, 'Hidden Homeless' now has an Amazon "Wish list" of regularly needed items. So, if you/your family are familiar with purchasing from Amazon, perhaps you could help someone in great need using this link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/1G80JKHEXGHTJ?ref_=wl_share Anything you kindly purchase/donate from this Amazon wish list (eg jogging bottoms) will be delivered directly to Katie Hall@Hidden Homeless Outreach by Amazon for us to distribute. Thank you! 7
Cookery Heritage You may remember that in one of Catherine’s letters she asked for recipes using beetroot. I immediately thought of the cookery book passed on to me from my mother. It’s called “Cookery for every Household “ written by Florence B Jack. It was first published in 1914 but my edition is a reissue dated 1938. It makes for wonderful and entertaining reading. I’ve chosen some bits to share which I hope will make you smile. “The advantages of cooking by gas: A gas stove is especially useful in flats where ladies very often have to do all their own work, or a greater part of it, themselves, and where actual labour must be reduced to a minimum. In small houses also, where a gas stove and gas fire are fitted up, one servant may suffice, where certainly two would be required if a kitchen range and coal fires had to be kept clean and burning. The price of gas stoves runs from about £4 to £12 or can be hired for about 2s 3d per quarter” “Paper bag cookery Advantages. Cleanliness and freedom from smell are among the first. The food is placed in a perfectly clean bag, which cannot be said of all saucepans even under the most ideal conditions: and the odour of cooking, so often objectionable in small houses or flats, can be done away with altogether.” We are now a very health conscious society and we see in our supermarkets many kinds of milk. People probably think this is quite new, but in the section for miscellaneous recipes there is one for coconut milk and another for almond milk. And how about a festive sandwich using figs, dates, orange juice and nuts? 8
“Blend the figs and dates, moisten with juice then add finely chopped nuts. Place in a small basin, cover with greaseproof and press with a weight for a couple of hours. Slice and put between buttered bread.” In all the book has 3,078 recipes. Finally if you want to impress your family there is a section showing 17 different ways to fold a serviette. In these last few months we have rediscovered the joys of home cooked food and the fun of baking. As we celebrate the birth of Christ we remember that in the Bible we see time and time again how sharing food and fellowship are very much part of our faith. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and peaceful New Year Joan Miss Florence B. Jack was a teacher of cookery, laundry work, and housekeeping at the Edinburgh School of Domestic Economy and she wrote a number of books, some of which are listed here: Good Housekeeping cookery book [1925] Modern woman menus and recipes [1927] One hundred drinks and cups [1927] One hundred home brewed wines [1927] One hundred salads & sandwiches [1928] One hundred pickles and relishes [1928] Cakes: 100 tested recipes [1907] The Art of Laundry Work [1895] The Art of Cooking for invalids [1896] 9
Our Church Christmas Tree For many years now Bernard has made sure that we always have a beautiful Christmas tree in church. This year at the time of going to print we don’t know whether we will be able to have services in church during Advent, but one way or another we will have a tree, either in the church or outside. Thank you Bernard O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, Of all the trees most lovely; O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree, Of all the trees most lovely.
