CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 NAZARENE NEWS A MESSAGE FROM OUR NATIONAL DIRECTOR Greetings in the Name of our Risen Lord: June is typically District Assembly month for the Church of the Nazarene across our country. From late May until the end of June we celebrate together, we fellowship together, we rally around what God is doing in the midst of His people. This year we saw a combination of different kinds of events on each district. But the one thing common to all was the expression of gratitude to God for his “keeping power”, His “sustaining power” through an arduous and sometimes challenging period of history. It seems that the end is in sight regarding the COVID impact and its trail of destruction. Let’s make no mistake about it, there is a trail of destruction. Death, sickness, isolation, fear, uncertainty…these are all words that describe to some degree or other the impact of a global pandemic. The question before us today is unavoidable...what now? While we move towards the end of a crisis, we also move to the beginning of a new reality. It seems as if everything has changed, work, social interaction, and church!. CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 Hear the word of the Lord... "THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD, I SHALL NOT WANT". These words are so familiar. We hear them often at a funeral service as a reminder that once this ceremony is over, once final words have been spoken, once the tributes and eulogies have been presented, it is the Lord who will be with us to shepherd us and to lead us beside the still waters and to restore our souls. I believe that COVID will require a funeral service. You see funeral services do not remove all the pain. Funeral services provide a “balm in Gilead”, but dependence upon God and His provisions as a person walks into the post funeral experience (which can last a long time), is what we need once the “all clear” is given. By the way, it probably won’t be an “all clear” message. So, to the Church in Canada , I say the following… • let us pray our way through changing times... • let us tread carefully following well worn pathways of proven, successful returns… • let us not be tempted to move forward in our own strength… • let us not abandon the old ways simply because we have had to adopt new ways... • Let us truly be sheep whose Shepherd is the Lord following Him every step of the way… • Let us dwell by the deep, still waters… For then WE SHALL NOT WANT, and OUR SOULS WILL BE RESTORED. Lord willing, soon we will be together again, soon the fellowship of kindred spirits will be an in person reality, soon all those who have “joined” us virtually will enjoy the warmth and hospitality of the gathered ones. Lord willing, we will also see the continuation of many virtual ministries that have been so effective during these challenging days. However God uses your ministry, let us merge into His future with our hands firmly placed in His. Blessings upon you and thanks to God for you. Rev. Ian Fitzpatrick. CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 Dear friends, This we observe the 154th year as an official country, let us not forget that we are in unprecedented times. With the recent discoveries of the graves of precious indigenous children (and with the probability of more discoveries pending), let us remember that all of us have an obligation to think, act and live like Jesus, who created all people in his image. We do not observe Canada Day because we are perfect (we are not) but we observe Canada Day because we exist. There are qualities that make this country great, but there are shameful historical and current practices that should drive us to our knees. Let us pray and act to acknowledge and correct wrongs, and to make sure we do not repeat the violations that produce the dark realities we are currently dealing with. “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 chronicles 7:14 To Subscribe or Unsubscribe contact: ycristales@nazarene.ca 3

CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 Canada Atlantic District It is with great regret that the Canada Atlantic District announced the cancellation of their 2021 District Assembly. In light of the uncertainties surrounding the Covid 19 pandemic and associated protocols, they were forced to come to this decision. Their prayer was for God’s healing touch. The following words were said to the CAD assembly, “Love expressed in caution is perhaps the most effective witness of the church at this time.” CAD WEBSITE CAD FACEBOOK CAD YOUTUBE 86th Annual Canada Central District Assembly In spite of the Covid-19 restrictions which did not allow for them to meet in person, the Canada Central District had a blessed weekend as they did the business of the Church and celebrated what God is doing. CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 Canada Quebec District Gathering On Friday 18th June the Canada Quebec District NMI convened under the leadership of President Reverend Dianna Bradshaw. It was a great time together as we connected virtually. Reverend Kellman (Barbados) shared a message of challenge and hope, expressing his gratitude to the people of Quebec for their support in providing COVID equipment to their church. Pictured: N.M.I. President Reverend Dianna Bradshaw, District NMI Secretary Reverend Jean Luis Lovanis and Reverend Kellman (Barbados). On Saturday 19th June they convened a virtual District Gathering where District Superintendent, Reverend Ian Fitzpatrick brought his 8th and final report. Back in 2013 while he was D.S. of Canada Central a partnership was establish between the two districts. Following his appointment as National Director Reverend Ian continued as D.S. of Quebec. Even though this worked very well, the responsibilities of these two roles became overwhelming and it was necessary for a plan to be put in place for Quebec to have their own “on the ground” D.S. Three years ago Reverend Fitzpatrick appointed Reverend Randy Barrington as District Director and then two years ago that role was changed to Assistant District Superintendent. The D.S. and DAB recommended that Reverend Randy become the D.S. and General Superintendent Dr. David Graves affirmed the recommendation and installed Reverend Randy on Saturday 19th June, 2021. We wish Randy and Brenda God’s richest blessings as they assume this new role. They will continue to pastor the Franklin Centre Church of the Nazarene. From an early age my parents instilled in us the importance of actively pursuing a dynamic relationship with Jesus - primarily through personal prayer and Bible reading as kids. CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 When I was 15, our family moved to Abu Dhabi in the united Arab emirates (UAE). We attended a CMA church there, where I first experienced intentional discipleship, made by a personal decision to commit to following Christ, And was baptized at the age of 16. Through a series of coincidences, I ended up on the shores of Vancouver, British Columbia, four years later, as an undergraduate student at the University of British Columbia (UBC). My four years at UBC were formational: I met my future wife, Carolyn Wong, graduated with a degree in Psychology, was actively involved in a vibrant campus Christian community (University Christian Ministries, where I was student president for two years), and encountered the intersection of rigorous academic thought and Christian discipleship through Regent College. I also attended 10th Avenue Alliance Church during my six years in Vancouver. Post graduation, I worked for two years as a youth leadership facilitator with the now infamous (if you follow Canadian political shenanigans) ‘We Charity’, where I had the opportunity to work with diverse communities across Western Canada. In 2010, Carolyn and I were married, and moved to Calgary, so Carolyn could attend medical school at the University of Calgary (UC). We also began attending Calgary First Church of the Nazarene (CFCN) at that time and have not looked back since! For the next three years I worked as a youth social worker with a local social service agency, before taking on the role of Youth Pastor at CFCN, while also beginning working toward a master’s in environmental design at the UC. Somewhere in there, we had two daughters, now aged five (Sylvie) and two (Josephine) respectively. 2018 I stepped down from my pastoral role, completed my post graduate education, finally became a Canadian citizen, and began working as an independent urban planning consultant. Besides my four years in an official ministry capacity at CFCN, Carolyn and I have both served as music leaders, children's ministry volunteers, sound/light technicians, and communications leads. We currently co-lead a small group, and I sit on the church board. Carolyn is now a practicing family physician who directs the Care of the Elderly and Comprehensive Community Care programs in Calgary. I consult primarily with two organizations: Sustainable Calgary (a non-profit) and Hive Development (a private firm). My work with the former involves advocacy and policy planning in more marginalized communities, while the latter involves land- use planning and community engagement for real estate developers. We both strive to allow Holy Spirit to use us as salt and light where we have been currently called and placed. To Subscribe or Unsubscribe contact: ycristales@nazarene.ca 13

CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 NAZARENE MISSIONS INTERNATIONAL (N.M.I.) Read about our Canadian Missionaries from the Canada Central District …In 2019, God allowed us the opportunity to go to Spain. While we were there, God moved our hearts and we felt a weight for all the souls who do not know the gospel. Upon returning from our trip, we started to pray for confirmation and guidance to see if we should go to Spain to sow the Word, plant churches, and encourage the next generation of God-fearing leaders. Today, in the midst of a world pandemic, the Lord has opened doors in a powerful and supernatural way! In early 2022, we will begin pastoring in Polígono Norte en Sevilla, Spain on a 2 year assignment. After that, we will keep sowing where the Lord takes us. We invite you all to be part of this calling as we raise funds and prayerfully prepare for our assignment in Eurasia! "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations..." CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 Celebrating the life, ministry of Dan Cop Dan Copp, 65, of Cameron, Missouri, passed away 18 June 2021 after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. He previously served as director of Clergy Development and as education commissioner for the Church of the Nazarene. Copp was known as a man who empowered others and breathed life and affirmation into people’s callings and passions while making a seat at the table for everyone to be heard. “Dan was the epitome of a grace-filled leader; a churchman, visionary and transformational leader,” said General Superintendent Fili Chambo. “He led with integrity, humility, and grace and helped develop and empower leaders for the church around the world. I admired his ability to listen well and how he encouraged, valued, and facilitated many robust conversations for the church with much grace. He was committed to ensuring that all voices are heard.” Daniel Robert Copp was born on 12 November 1955 in Sacramento, California. He attended Point Loma Nazarene College (now University), graduating in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. While attending Point Loma, he met Vicki Honea and they were married in Vista, California, on 7 June 1977. He went on to complete his Master of Divinity at Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1983. That spring, he became pastor of Oakland First Church of the Nazarene in California. There the Copps had two daughters, Megan (Albaugh) and Mackenzie (Wood). In 1987, he made the move south to pastor San Diego Mission Valley. While serving there, he earned his Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. He also served as chair of the Board of Trustees at Point Loma. In 2000, Copp was called to be superintendent of the Arizona District, where he served for five years. In 2005, he became the director of Clergy Development, a role in which he served for nearly 15 years as he encouraged pastors. He began serving in a dual role in 2011 when he became educational commissioner for the denomination, providing oversight and support for Nazarene institutions of higher learning across the six world regions. CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE CANADA JULY 2021 He was a collaborator and a mentor, helping fan the flame of others' passions and making space for their voices to be heard. “I believe that God prepared and brought Dr. Daniel R. Copp at the right time to the right place to lead both global education and global clergy development in the Church of the Nazarene,” said Klaus Arnold, current director of Global Education and Clergy Development. “His gifts, his personality, his experiences in different ministry roles, and, most of all, his character prepared him for this role which he filled out so well. One of the best ways to describe his impact on the lives of many through his ministry as education commissioner is ‘affirmation.’ Dan has been affirming both women and men to fulfill the call of God in their lives. This is certainly true for me and my ministry. Without Dan, many of us would not be the same.” After retiring, he served alongside Vicki as an associate pastor at Cameron Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin daughters born prematurely in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Vicki Copp; daughters, Mackenzie Wood and Megan Albaugh; brother Jerry Copp; sister, Sharon Oyadomari; four grandchildren, 14 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews.
