MARIST CATHOLIC COLLEGE PENSHURST Friday 16 August - Number 12 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Recently the College has developed a document that brings together the key elements of the foundations for learning at Marist Catholic College Penshurst. These elements include; Motto and Mission, A Marist Way of Educating and the Vision for Learning. This document will be included as part of student reports, College publications and forms the basis for all College planning and decisions. MOTTO AND MISSION Our approach to education is embodied in the College motto: Agnoscere et Diligere – To Know And To Love. Our mission calls us to know deeply and to love intimately: God, oneself and other people. Our College holds the Gospel of Jesus Christ at its heart. We seek to live out our response to the Gospel with the same faith, hope and love as Mary, the Mother of God. Our Marian approach is to nurture, to teach, to gather, to reconcile and to stand with our students. A MARIST WAY OF EDUCATING St Marcellin Champagnat provides the inspiration for our teachers in his golden rule: “To educate children first we must love them – love them all equally.” From this principle flow the particular characteristics of our style of educating: presence, simplicity, family spirit, love of work, and following the way of Mary. This is the foundation of a Marist education; being nurtured with opportunities, inspired to work hard and empowered with knowledge to realise our aspirations. VISION FOR LEARNING Our vision for learning ‘Aspire to be Inspired’ is guided by our Motto, Mission and our Marist way of educating. This vision animates and empowers all members of our community to hope, to dream and to strive. Aspiration needs inspiration for learning success as inspiration needs aspiration. When working in tandem, these place a strong emphasis on seeking constant improvement and striving for personal best in all aspects of life. We aim to foster in our students the self-confidence and drive to transform their world and the world of those around them. Learning and wellbeing are inextricably linked — students learn best when their wellbeing is optimised, and they develop a strong sense of wellbeing when they experience success in learning. Therefore, an integral part of the Vision for Learning is learner wellbeing. There are four principles in our Vision for Learning that inform methods and approaches to learning. These principles are: FOSTER A LOVE OF DEEP LEARNING. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .DREAM MORE Fostering a deep love of learning promotes student growth, engagement and thirst for new possibilities. Deeper learning results from valuing knowledge and recognising its benefits. Engaged learners are autonomous and seize opportunities to grasp difficult concepts and complex ideas. CELEBRATE AND WORK HARD TOGETHER. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DO MORE Regular collaboration and reflection by both students and teachers encourage growth and renewal. Working together allows for opportunities to apply, constructively critique, learn from each other and celebrate our achievements through the showcasing of knowledge, skills and talents. ENGAGE IN CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .LEARN MORE Society needs critical and creative learners to adapt, innovate and generate new ideas and solutions. It is fostered through developing imagination and skills in investigation, problem-solving and divergent thinking which transforms students into independent and self-motivated learners. NURTURE ALL MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .BECOME MORE Nurturing all members of our community involves knowing students and developing learning strategies to address their individuality and diversity. Quality relationships assist in creating positive learning environments that are inclusive, supportive and nurturing. Agnoscere Et Diligere - To Know and To Love FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Equipping adolescents to better manage stress and anxiety Everyone worries and feels anxious at times, especially at times of high stress. For example, it’s normal for teenagers to feel anxious in the lead up to examinations, particularly those in Year 12. It’s a normal part of growing, changing and learning. However sometimes worry and anxiety can also become powerful and restrictive, disrupting adolescents in ways that can lead to avoidance, missed school, outbursts, conflict, and often depression if left untreated. Behaviours that should sound a warning bell include: • unusual or substantial changes in moods and emotions, such as frequent crying and emotional distress at odd times, for example when alone in bed at night • withdrawal, followed by increased emotionality • expressing hopelessness and generalised fears • loss of enjoyment and low energy, for example not enjoying sport, socialising or family functions • Any signs of self-harm, feigning injury or feigning illness. Sweeping problems under the carpet, or telling your child who is clearly struggling with an issue “not to worry” or “you’ll cope” can sometimes create the opposite effect. We know from current research that adults have significant influence on how well adolescents learn to manage stress, express emotions, and approach challenges. The great news is that research also shows that modifying certain patterns makes a very big difference in whether or not adolescents go on to become anxious or depressed themselves. Identifying what parents and teachers can do proactively and retroactively - paying attention to how and what we teach adolescents about risk, danger, uncertainty, and problem solving - is critical. We are fortunate to have Dr Toula Tsovolos present on this topic later this term to interested staff and parents. Dr Tsovolos is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and has a wealth of knowledge and experience with the pressures facing today’s teenagers. Her presentation will focus particularly on what adults can do to support adolescents suffering from stress and anxiety. The teacher/parent presentation will be held on Wednesday 11 September, commencing at 5pm in the Theatrette. Please click here to RSVP your attendance. We hope you are able to join us. Agnoscere Et Diligere - To Know and To Love DANCE NEWS On Tuesday 6 August 32 girls represented the College at the St George Dance Eisteddfod. We all performed very well and placed in every dance. The Hip-Hop group placed 1st, Contemporary placed 2nd, Intermediate Jazz placed 2nd and Junior Jazz placed 3rd. It was great to see all of the hard work paid off as each dancer performed to the best of their ability. The Marist Spirit was well and truly alive on this day. A special thank you to Mrs Vasallo, Ms Khouri and Mrs Nelson for your support. Georgia Mitropoulos Year 10 BANDFEST On Wednesday 3 July the concert band performed at the annual Engadine Bandfest held at the St George Bank Auditorium Kogarah. The event involves school ensembles from around the state who perform in front of judges and are graded bronze, silver or gold. Our College Concert Band performed 3 pieces in total ‘A Million Dreams’ from the movie The Greatest Showman, ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ by Justin Timberlake and ‘Shut Up and Dance’ by Walk the Moon. This was the first time we had performed this year and we were very nervous. We played our best and we were awarded a silver. Special mention was given to Bobby Pasovski of Year 10 for his solo in ‘Can’t stop the feeling’, Chelsea Turnbull of Year 7 for her solo in ‘A Million Dreams’ and the crowd favourite Montana Wetten for her vocal solo in ‘A Million Dreams’. A big thank you to Ms Clare Mok, who came to help the percussion at the event and to our conductor Mr Smith for organising the event and our band practices every Wednesday morning. Regina Theodora Year 11 - College Concert Band Captain 2019 PHOTOGRAPHY EXCURSION In Week 2 this term, elective Photography students attended an excursion to the Museum of Contemporary Art to explore and expand on their photographic skills and become aware of the photographic practice of artists. The day involved a tour of the Shaun Gladwell exhibition, a video installation artist, who is linked to a case study as part of the students’ work this term. Students were able to interact and become familiar with an artist who uses the urban environment and figurative motion in his installations. This was a great influence for their own photographic practice for their next task which is to create a video installation. The tour was followed by a workshop using technological aspects such as stop motion techniques, Ipads and video footage with green screens. After visiting the gallery, Mr Brustolin and Mrs Nelson took the group on a tour of the Rocks for a photoshoot, where they used SLR cameras to capture images of our very own urban surroundings.
