NewHope News December 2017 / January 2018 Peace on Earth. Isa 11:1-10 (3 Dec) At Christmas we celebrate amazing possibilities – gifts from God that are so incredible they sound like cliches. Isaiah envisions these great possibilities in his ancient prophecies. He speaks in beautiful pictures of worldwide peace and invites us to live more expectantly. At Christmas we celebrate, and surrender ourselves to, the author of that peace – Jesus! Pulpit Exchange - Peter MacPherson (10 Dec) In 1994 the British Library bought a copy of the New Testament for £1 million pounds describing the book as “the most important printed book in the English language.” It’s a copy of the 1526 New Testament translated by William Tyndale. As part of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation Peter MacPherson (Senior Minister of St Alfred’s Anglican Church, Blackburn North) will tell the fascinating and inspiring story of how William Tyndale lost his life so we could read the Bible in English. Joy to the World. Isa 52:7-9 (17 Dec) The news from mainstream and social media is often disheartening, but Isaiah reminds us that the news from heaven is wonderfully uplifting. A saviour has been born! Where do you get your ‘News’? And how does it affect your life? Christmas is an invitation to sign-up for heaven’s ‘Joy News Feed’. Love From Above. Isa 16:5; Ps 89:1-4 (24, 25 Dec) Isaiah envisions a throne established with love – not power, not family privilege, not the people’s choice – pure unadulterated love appointed to rule over us all. At Christmas we celebrate this promised throne and one who sits on it (John 3:16-17). Fresh Possibilities. Isa 43:14-21 (30 Dec) God never changes, he is our steadfast creator. But he is always at work in our world and on our behalf. We must never imagine that after forming people out of clay God has taken his leave. Quit the opposite, he is continually at work with his hands in the ‘dirt’ of his creation, doing a ‘new thing’ motivated by love for us. The question is ‘can we perceive it?’ These sermons will be preached across our English congregations this month and you can view them online. Check the website for weekly details. PAGE 4
NewHope News December 2017 / January 2018 Guest Speaker: David Rattan (7 Jan) On the last day of 2017, David Rattan will conclude his ministry as the Senior Minister of One Community Church in Blackburn North where he has served for the past 23 years. He is very good friend of NewHope and a close colleague of our Senior Pastor, Allan. It is our privilege to have David preach at NewHope and bring a New Year’s message of hope and courage as he reflects on the years of God’s faithfulness. Courageous Possibilities. 1 Samuel 17 (14 Jan) Between us and every worthwhile achievement there stands a big, hairy audacious problem, a Goliath. There is great wisdom in the Bible for understanding the fear and faith at work in these critical seasons when Godly purposes hang in the balance. Some of our problems are enormous, but God’s possibilities are even bigger. Guest Speaker: René Erwich (21 Jan) We welcome the newly appointed Principal of Whitley College, our Baptist theological college in Victoria, to bring a message at NewHope this summer. René and Krista have relocated from the Netherlands to take-up ministry here in Melbourne. René has a wonderful reputation in Europe and beyond for his work as a theologian and an effective local church leader. We look forward to hearing from him as we pray for his ministry and the work of Whitley College. Delayed Possibilities. Numb 13, Josh 14 (28 Jan) God’s biggest and best possibilities can take years to come. Caleb was a faithful servant of the Lord who saw great possibilities at a key moment in Israel’s history. He tried to get people to obey God, but he was outnumbered and the decision went against him. He had to wait 40 years to see God’s promises fulfilled. It must have been hard! But Caleb’s faith continued to rise and what we see near the end of his life is fantastic. These sermons will be preached across our English congregations this month and you can view them online. Check the website for weekly details. PAGE 5
NewHope News December 2017 / January 2018 Merry Christmas from NewHope! The Church Council and Staff Team at NewHope wish you every blessing at Christmas and a hope-filled 2018. May God’s light shine into your heart and home at this joyful season. Build Update December/January is going to be a very busy time on site. The upstairs areas need to be completed so the staff office can move there, before the current office is gutted for the café and foyer/internal street extension. The ground level roof and cladding will be appearing. The old Preschool room will be refurbished and tied in to the new room (old West Hall). The Medical Centre work continues. Keep an eye on newhope.net.au/build for the latest photos. Pledges and gifts towards the project are greatly appreciated (see Giving page on the back of the bulletin, giving envelope or website). Please be prayerful for safety on and around the site, and for our build co-ordinator Jordan Hill and site manager Warren Hill. NewHope News December 2017 / January 2018 NewHope will participate in the nation wide ‘Jesus the Game Changer’ initiative in early 2018. Excellent video material and Bible study guides have been prepared by Karl Fasse of Olive Tree media and we look forward to engaging in this opportunity of learning and evangelism. “Jesus Christ has made an indelible mark on human history and He continues to do so through His followers. Yet many people do not realise that the values western democracies are built on originate in the life and teaching of Jesus – the equality of all, servant leadership, care for the poor and marginalised, dignity of women and children, education, to name just a few. In this series, host Karl Faase travels to the UK, USA, Singapore, India and Australia, interviewing authors, academics and modern- day game changers about how the life and teaching of Jesus changed the world and why it matters.” You can learn more online: olivetreemedia.com.au/jesus-the-game-changer/ PAGE 7

NewHope News December 2017 / January 2018 Global Our Christmas Offering For Nepal Nepal is one of the world’s least developed countries. They are still recovering from the devastating 2015 earthquake. Our partners work in remote and vulnerable communities to help them set their own goals and take responsibility for their own development, to support the most marginalised, and to secure more reliable livelihoods. We have adopted the Community Health and Development project in Lalitpur Nepal. All of this is led by local Christians who work together. Our NewHope Christmas EVE (10am and 6pm) and Christmas DAY 9am offerings are focused on this work of Baptist World Aid Australia in Nepal. We want to grow our strategic relationship in this and other ways. NewHope individuals are also been sponsoring children and their communities in Nepal. Allan Demond and Danny Hunt have recently visited Nepal to see this working on the ground and have been very impressed with the significance and quality of the work, and the accountabilities involved. You can have confidence that your gift will make a difference. Thank YOU for your gift this Christmas! PAGE 11
