The Lost Bunny By Evelyn Thoma 1st Place • 6 Years Old My Aunt Mindy gave me “Bunny” when I was a baby. It is a “Jellycat” stuffed Bunny. She is a gray Bunny with a pink nose and black eyes. I slept with her every night! She was special. 10 2019 Share a Story Contest
In the summer when I was five I went with her to the doctor because I was very sick. I was scared because I needed tests. Then I lost Bunny. I felt very sad and cried at bed time a lot. I missed her very much. We tried to find her but never did. My parents got me a new bunny. We called her Baby. I still missed Bunny. 2019 Share a Story Contest 11
Last winter a box came in the mail from Aunt Mindy. Bunny was in it! I was surprised! She had on a pink sombrero! The mail lady found and tracked her tag to Aunt Mindy. Aunt Mindy took Bunny fun places and had pictures of it. Bunny went to a tire store, a Mexican restaurant, she played in the snow and more! I was very, very, very happy to have her back! I sleep with her every night. I love Bunny. 12 2019 Share a Story Contest

Get Santa By Hannah Howard 1st Place • 7 Years Old On Christmas Eve my brother, sister and me try to trap Santa. It never goes well. The past few years we never trapped Santa but we tried. 2019 Share a Story Contest 19
One year me and my brother put out our bow tie that makes noise. We put it next to the chimney, so that we he would get out of the chimney he would step on it. And it would play Christmas Carols. The next year we set cookies in my room so Santa could come in my room. He did, but fell asleep and I didn’t hear him. 20 2019 Share a Story Contest
Last Christmas I hung a banner that said “Welcome Santa!” I went from trying to trap him to not trapping him because he might get mad and put me on the naughty list. I would not get presents I would get coal. 2019 Share a Story Contest 21

Mohican By Jacob Howard 1st Place • 8 Years Old “Everyone, hop in the car” says Mom. We are going to Mohican. Every year our entire family goes to Mohican for Thanksgiving. When we get to Mohican we unpack our bags and take them into our cabin. Once we get our stuff in we head to the campfire where everybody is. The adults sit and chat while the kids play tag. We go back to our cabin and go to sleep. 28 2019 Share a Story Contest
When I wake up I run into Mom and Dad’s room and ask them if we can go outside. “Not until we eat breakfast” says Dad. Once we eat breakfast our family goes for a hike. When we are done hiking I go down and see if anyone wants to build a fort. We started building forts when someone found a half-finished fort that they thought bigfoot made. Some of the coolest forts were a tepee designed by the girls, two logs and a radio designed by the boys, and a birds nest style fort designed by the boys. This year we merged to build a fort that I started last year. In 3 days it went from a stick frame to done. Building forts is the best part about Mohican! 2019 Share a Story Contest 29
On Thanksgiving we eat a Thanksgiving dinner with our family. 50 family members come to the dinner. We eat turkey, mac and chees, banana bread, and crackers. Once I ate 3 pieces of banana bread because it was SO good. When we are done eating we play games. Last year I brought NFL Showdown and it was a hit. On Friday we leave. It is so sad. I can’t wait until next year! 30 2019 Share a Story Contest
My Family Tradition By Nakyia Crosby 2nd Place • 8 Years Old Every year on December 1st, we start our Christmas Tradition. We first start off by having Daddy get all the boxes from the basement, because he has all the muscles and can kill all the bugs if they are down there. 2019 Share a Story Contest 31
Next we bring all the boxes to our front room. We put Christmas music on our boombox or tv and start jammin’. Daddy puts the tree up and mommy, me and my siblings get to do the decorations. 32 2019 Share a Story Contest
Lastly we switch every year on who gets to put the star on the tree. I did this year! Then we put up the house decorations and we hang up our stockings. Finally we get to bake cookies and eat them all! 2019 Share a Story Contest 33
My Trip to New Jersey/New York By Kirsten Adjebeng 3rd Place • 8 Years Old Every year, me and my family go to New Jersey and it is always really fun. First we pack our stuff like our cloths, baby bottles and baby food. It takes a day or two to pack. Later my mom’s friend has our car rented and it’s always huge and we pick our spots before we load it up with the stuff. 34 2019 Share a Story Contest
On the trip to New Jersey sometimes we are lucky and we stop at some rest stops and buy things like food for the rest of the trip but we make a lot of rest stops. Most of the time the kids are doing something like napping, playing, sightseeing, electronics, and eating. 2019 Share a Story Contest 35
When we arrive at New Jersey our first stop is to my grandma we stay there for 30 minutes and get food from there and our grandma comes with us to the hotel and stays with us and then we all get ready for church. When we get there it is really loud and all the kids go to the Sunday school and watch movies. When we get home we are all so tired sometimes that we sleep on the floor. Three days pass and we drop off my grandma at her house and go home and sleep. 36 2019 Share a Story Contest
Different is Normal By Chloe Nartker 1st Place • 9 Years Old In 2017 I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. Sometimes it makes me feel different from other kids. I wear an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) all the time. I carry a bag with my Dexcom CGM in it. It beeps a lot. My friends at school are helpful and help me take care of myself. However, people who don’t know me ask a lot of questions and don’t understand. Every year my family celebrates my life and helps me feel more confident about having diabetes by celebrating my diaversary and going to the Kalahari with other Type One Diabetics. 2019 Share a Story Contest 37
One tradition my family has is celebrating my diaversary on October 12. A diaversary is the anniversary of me being diagnosed with diabetes. It doesn’t celebrate that I have diabetes, but it celebrates that I’m another year stronger. At a diaversary party I eat cake and food, play games and visit with friends and family who support me. This last year I had a pancreas piñata. A pancreas is an organ people have inside of them. Mine doesn’t work. That’s how I got diabetes. Type One Diabetes can happen to adults, too, not just kids. Diaversary parties are fun like birthday parties. 38 2019 Share a Story Contest
Another tradition my family has is we go to the Kalahari every year with other Type One Diabetic families. The first weekend in February people with Type One Diabetes from all over the place go to the Kalahari. I meet other Type One Diabetics like me. It makes me feel normal when I see lots of other people with pumps, CGMs, finger pokers, shots, and eating snacks for low blood glucose. Sometimes managing diabetes can be tough, but there is a purpose for me to have it. I’m glad my family has these traditions to support me with my diabetes. 2019 Share a Story Contest 39
Christmas Eve By Sara Hertzfeld 2nd Place • 9 Years Old “Sara Sara! Sara!!! Wake up it’s Christmas Eve.” I jumped out of my bed, pushed my sister, and ran out of my bedroom. We opened the stockings, got dressed and went to my Grandparents house. My Mom’s friends come over too. It has been our family tradition for more than 36 years now for my Mom’s friends to visit with my family on Christmas Eve. “Mom what are going to do when we get there?” I asked. “When we get there we are going to get ready to go to church” my mom exclaimed. Two hours later “Mom” my sister complained “These shoes hurt.” “Well I am very sorry but they will have to do” my Mom said angrily. Three hours later… “Can we get ready for them now” my sister and I harmonized. One hour later… “Ding Dong” “BARK BARK BARK.” My grandma exclaimed “HUSH, COCO.” Coco walks up to them and sniffs “BARK BARK.” “Hush HUSH HUSH!” Everybody yells when my Grandma and Coco have a fight. “Hi, Hello, Merry Christmas, good to see you.” Then both dads say “Bag face time!!!” This started 6 years ago in my grandparents basement. We cut eye holes in paper bags put it on the two Dad’s then take some photos. We call them the Naughty Elves. 40 2019 Share a Story Contest
During this Christmas Eve visit we have decorated cookies for 3 years now, too. One year we did a cookie decorating contest. I came in second place. The next year, I frosted a poinsettia cookie. While I was doing it, I knocked over the red sanding sugar. The following year, we created a Summer theme for our cookies. My Grandpa got Taffy that looked like fruit and plain taffy so that we could mold it in different shapes and place it on the cookies. One Christmas Eve, when I was four, and we decorated cookies, I took the blue food coloring paste (because I thought it was frosting) and squeezed it in my mouth. Before I could finish, my mom looked at me and screamed an alarming “WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR MOUTH!?” I answered sweetly, “Nothing.” 2019 Share a Story Contest 41
“I won” said Caroline “and I lost” Paxson said sadly. My moms friends name is Mary and her husband’s name is Peter. They have three kids, Will, Caroline and Elizabeth (Her middle name is Paxson, so we call by her middle name or E.P.). Will is 19, Caroline is 16, and Paxson is 14 years old. “Dinnertime” Mary yelled. My Aunt Liz exclaimed “PARTY POPPER TIME!” “3-2-1” everyone exclaimed. POP!! Inside everyone got one item, a crown, and a paper with jokes, riddles, and fortunes. Everyone yelled what they got “Glass diamond”, “Bookmark”, “Bracelet”, “Compass”, “Pen”. About an hour later, we open presents. I usually get unicorn things, books, clothes, and many other gifts too. Before the guests all depart, we leave cookies for Santa. We pick the best cookies and leave them on a plate with milk. We also throw Reindeer food outside and carrots too. “Yawn.” It’s getting late. After all, tomorrow is Christmas!!! I better get to bed. “Goodnight.” 42 2019 Share a Story Contest
Singing on the Stage By Adella Muir 3rd Place • 9 Years Old Every year, I am enthusiastic about our school music program. I line up to get on the stage with the rest of my classmates. We practice and practice until we get the verses and the songs just right. There is always a wide selection of audience members such as parents, nannies, grandparents, friends, siblings and cousins. At the end of our show the audience claps and claps until they can clap no more. My mom and Dad are beaming with joy when I see them! I love singing on the stage. 2019 Share a Story Contest 43
I have had a share of this immense tradition Kindergarten through 4th grade. I don’t know when it started, but I know it has gone on for many years. The most recent program I was in was a play/music program called “Why Do Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ear.” It included a lot of singing and the playing of instruments like tinkling bells and deep, booming drums. The whole 4th grade had to get dressed up and fancy. It was so much fun because we all had a job to do! That program was the best of all the music programs I’ve ever experienced. All the music programs always take place on a big, wooden stage. At the very far end of the stage, there are risers that are as tall as me! The risers are metal, with tiny slips of carpet down the very middle. I have had music programs in 2 different elementary schools, Waterville and Whitehouse. In Waterville, we performed in the cafeteria. In Whitehouse, we performed in the gymnasium. The lights on both stages would shine down on us! We were the stars of the show! In my programs, there have been some funny moments. One time our music teacher told us we were singing too quiet and to sing louder. So we started yelling really loud and my music teacher started laughing and telling us to quiet down! 44 2019 Share a Story Contest
I don’t think that we have a music program next year since we are in 5th grade, but I still really enjoyed all of the amusing music programs I’ve been in. At the end of all my music programs, I am sweating like a pig, my voice is so croaky, and I am exhausted. When I get home I quickly jump in the shower, get dressed and fall asleep in my bed! I loved being in all my music programs and I think I will never forget about any of them as I age and grow up! 2019 Share a Story Contest 45
Posey Lake By Claire Braun 1st Place • 10-11 Years Old Every summer my family and I go to our Grandma and Papa’s cottage at Posey Lake. We eat corn on the cob all the time. At the cottage, we don’t have Wi-Fi and spend most of the time outside. There is a maple tree that Grandma and Papa planted around the time I was born. I have many years of memories of the cottage. One time a guy called “Trapper” Ben caught a massive Alligator Snapping Turtle. It ripped right through the net! I was scared that it would bite me. One of my favorite things to do is kayaking in the lake. When I’m with an adult I kayak over to Turtle Cove. I like to pick water lilies on the way there. 46 2019 Share a Story Contest
Turtle Cove is what my family named the cove where we normally find turtles. Papa and I like to grab a net and catch turtles. Another fun activity is fishing on the dock. Once time I almost caught a fish that was about a foot long. I had been sad when the fish escaped before I could show it to anyone. At Posey Lake we catch lots of things such as turtles, frog and fish. However, we always release them. Last summer, I was sitting at the end of the dock when I noticed something small and black floating by my feet. I picked it up and brought it to my family. It was a baby Snapping Turtle! After a while we named it Junior Snapper. We were sad to let it go but will never forget him. 2019 Share a Story Contest 47
On the Fourth of July, we have so much fun. Besides the fireworks, the boat parade is my favorite. The boat parade is when people choose a theme and make their boat look like it. For instance, the people next door to our cottage made their boat’s theme Up. They covered their boats with helium balloons. My brother’s favorite movie is Up so he wanted them to win. One thing I like about the boat parade is the variety. Every year the boats are different. It reminds me of snowflakes. They all look somewhat similar, but never exactly the same. A couple of house after the parade, when it becomes dark, the fireworks start. While we wait for the fireworks, we roast s’mores. The fireworks are amazing. Brilliant yellows, vivid blues and bold greens streak the sky. My favorite kind are the fireworks that look like weeping willow trees. I always look forward to going to the cottage at Posey Lake. Every year at the lake is different. I can’t wait for what next summer will bring. 48 2019 Share a Story Contest
Skiing Extravaganza By Parker Ray 2nd Place • 10-11 Years Old Every year for the last two years I wake up at 8:15 run downstairs the day after Christmas, eat breakfast and then go back upstairs in a hurry. I take a shower, get dressed and brush my teeth. My brother Lucas and I are so excited to go skiing at Boyne Mountain, Michigan. We got all of our luggage into the car and had sandwiches for lunch. We watched movies and looked at the beautiful scenery for five hours. When we got to Boyne we checked in and it was around dinner time, so we ate dinner. After dinner we swam in an indoor/outdoor pool with snow you can roll around in and two hot tubs outside. Now it was time for bed and to move on to the next day. 2019 Share a Story Contest 49
Today is the day we get to ski. We all get dressed with our snow pants, coats, hats and gloves on. My mom, Lucas, and I go take skiing lessons to refresh our memories of skiing, but my mom kept on screaming. While we do that, my dad goes and tries other hills that we can try. After our skiing lessons, we go downstairs for the breakfast buffet and I get eggs, waffles, cereal, strawberries, sausage, hash browns and a glass of water. Now we go back upstairs so I can put my contacts into my eyes. When we got back downstairs, my mom who was too scared to ski, returned her skis and poles. She decided to take snowshoe walks or watch us ski. We did a few practice runs on the bunny slopes. Now it was time to ride down giant, Ram’s Run, my dad fell right in front of me which made me fall and our skis fell off. When I finished the run we got hot chocolate and had pizza for lunch. After lunch it was very cold and I did a few more runs on the bunny slopes and then went back to our hotel to swim and have leftover pizza for dinner. The next day we did a lot of the same stuff we did yesterday except lessons and Ram’s Run. Today was so amusing because my dad fell off the ski lift for the second time in two years, the reason was the ski lifts were wet from the rainy weather. We ate at the breakfast buffet for breakfast, had snacks for lunch and ate at a tavern for dinner. After dinner we swam for the last time because we were leaving tomorrow. 50 2019 Share a Story Contest
Today disappointingly we had to leave back to Ohio on December 29th. All of us were really sore. We had our last breakfast, packed up our luggage and put it in the car. Lucas and I watched movies and listened to music till we got to the outlets to shop. We went to Pepperidge Farm, Northface, Nike and Pottery Barn. By now it was lunchtime, so we ate at a delicious restaurant that had fabulous burgers. I got a medium cooked burger with American cheese on a pretzel bun with a side of onion rings. For the onion rings all I do is peel off the breading and eat it and leave the onions alone. Now it was time to get back on the road and watch movies. When we got home I went right to play with my Christmas presents. 2019 Share a Story Contest 51
Perfect Pennsylvania By Liam Mock 3rd Place • 10-11 Years Old One week every summer my family and I go to Pennsylvania. 6 and a half hours in the car with 7 different people. Awful but worth it (especially the first year I went when I was still in a car seat with 2 others next to me.) We make a pit stop halfway there. On the way there, I read, play video games and I sleep since I wake up at 5 in the morning. When we finally get there I run inside. Then I run back out to grab my stuff. After I run back inside I unpack my things. 52 2019 Share a Story Contest
At the cabin we stay at there is a pond we bathe in and no tv so we are outside all the time. No one really cares too much where we go as long as we tell someone that we’re going somewhere. The pond that is next to the cabin is huge. We can catch fish, toads, frogs, newts and salamanders. There is a big old dock and a floating platform in the middle. We are allowed to canoe around the pond too. The wildlife there is marvelous. The squirrels chattering and the birds tweeting like nature’s orchestra. There are wolves and bears but I can’t find them even when I’m not trying. If I wake up early in the morning sometimes my dad and I go on walks. One day my family and I went on a walk and we went to a clay lake that was orange. I accidentally got my boots stuck in the water. When we walked a little further, we found a creek. It was not orange like the lake. It was clear and filled with rocks. The year before we went to a deer park. The park was astonishing. There were albino deer and bucks. There were does and fawns. We got to feed the fawns. When you walked into the gift shop you can find a rattlesnake. In the next room over, there were a ton of stuffed dead animals that all live in the area. The next day we went to go get ice cream near a raging river. That was our last day in Pennsylvania. 2019 Share a Story Contest 53
When we had to go we said goodbye to everyone. The back in the car for 6 and a half hours. Video games, read and sleep again. When we finally get back home, we unpack and get some rest. It’s one of the best summer vacations I go on every year. 54 2019 Share a Story Contest
