The Ringing of the Church Bell
Call to Worship (based on Psalm 29)
L: The voice of our God and King is heard in blessing, as it echoes in its majestic powers over all creation.
P: We come to worship our God, and to celebrate the Mystery and Reality that is God’s everlasting glory.
L: The voice of God is heard in all creation, and it responds with joy to the voice of its Creator, Sustainer and Renewer.
P: We come to worship our God, and to celebrate God’s power and generosity towards all creation and all peoples.
L: We come to worship our God, and to celebrate the way we are welcomed into God’s glorious presence.
P: The voice of our Holy God is heard in the sacred spaces, and God’s grace is received as we worship. Amen.

Prayer of Invocation
Loving God, we are limited in our understanding of You, but we know that You care for us and for all creation. Thank
You for loving us and remaining with us in our sorrows and joys. Thank You for the life of Jesus whose life shows us
the way to life and happiness and trust. Thank You for Your Spirit who leads us. Warm our hearts and unite us, that we
might open our lives to You to accept all Your love and to respond to it by entrusting ourselves to You with all that You
have made us and given us. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.

*Hymn #1 “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty”
  1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall raise to thee. Holy, holy, holy, merciful
  and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
  2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and
  seraphim falling down before thee, who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
  3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see; only thou art
  holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity.
  4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea. Holy, holy,
  holy; merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

*Call to Confession
Let us confess our sins to the One who gives life eternally.
*Prayer of Confession
Holy God, we know that You are always there to lead us, yet we somehow lose our way and fall back into fear. We
confess that we have stumbled, and we recognize our need for You to lift us up and help us start again. Forgive us our
failings, restore us to strength, and reconcile us with You, ourselves, and each other, through the power of Christ and
the gift of Your Spirit.

*Time for Silent Prayer of Confession
*Assurance of Pardon
P: Hear the good news!
L: Sisters and brothers, hear the good news: We did not receive the spirit of slavery, but rather the spirit of adoption.
(Rom. 8:15) Your guilt has departed; your sin is blotted out, (Isa. 6:7) for you are God’s beloved children—forgiven,
loved, and free. May God’s peace be with you.
P: And also with you.

*Response Hymn #581 “Gloria Patri”
   Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
   world without end. Amen, Amen.
*Share the Peace of Christ with One Another

Memorial Day Prayer
Dear God, as we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms, we enjoy every day, we
consider how they have followed in the footsteps of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our servicemen
and women in Your strong arms. Cover them with Your sheltering grace and Your presence as they stand in the gap
for our protection. We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for Your unique blessings to fill their homes,
and we pray for Your peace, provision, hope, and strength to fill their lives. May the members of our armed forces be
supplied with the courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let
our military sisters and brothers feel our love and support. We also pray for veterans who have served their country
faithfully. Bless them and their families. Sovereign God and Lord of all nations, may we take time to reflect on the great
blessings we share as a nation and as a people. Our blessings have come at a high cost to others. May we remember
these sacrifices always with deep gratitude. We ask that You grant wisdom to the leaders of our armed forces. Guide
and direct them in their decisions. May they be led by Your will and Your heart as they pursue our nation's freedom.
We continue to pray for peace in our world. Lord, let Your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. In the name of
Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Hymn #337 “My Country Tis of Thee”
  1 My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing: land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims'
  pride, from every mountainside let freedom ring.
  2 My native country, thee, land of the noble free, thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, thy woods and templed
  hills; my heart with rapture thrills like that above.
  3 Let music swell the breeze, and ring from all the trees sweet freedom's song. Let mortal tongues awake; let all that
  breathe partake; let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.
  4 Our fathers' God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing. Long may our land be bright with freedom's holy light;
  protect us by thy might, great God, our King.
                                                    Proclaim God’s Word
Prayer of Illumination
Responsive Reading: Romans 8:12-17
    Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you
    live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
    14
       For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you
    slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And
    by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we
    are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order
    that we may also share in his glory.
Gospel Lesson: John 3:1-17
   Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to
   Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform
   the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
   3
     Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”
   4
     “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into
   their mother’s womb to be born!”
   5
     Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the
   Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying,
   ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it
   comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d]
   9
     “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
   10
      “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak
   of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have
   spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly
   things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.[e] 14 Just as
   Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f] 15 that everyone who
   believes may have eternal life in him.”[g]
   16
      For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but
   have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world
   through him.

Sermon
Hymn #300 “We Are One in the Spirit”
   1 We are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord; we are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord, and we pray
   that all unity may one day be restored.
   Refrain: And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love; yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
   2 We will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand; we will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand,
   and together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land:
   Refrain
   3 We will work with each other; we will work side by side; we will work with each other; we will work side by sid,
   and we’ll guard human dignity and save human pride:
   Refrain
   4 All praise to the Father, from whom all things come, and all praise to Christ Jesus, God’s only Son, and all praise
   to the Spirit, who makes us one:
   Refrain

Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed (Page 35 in Hymnal)
     I believe in God, the Father almighty,
         Maker of heaven and earth,
     and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
         who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
         born of the Virgin Mary,
         suffered under Pontius Pilate,
         was crucified, dead, and buried;
     he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
   he ascended into heaven,
       and sitteth on the right hand
       of God the Father Almighty;
   from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
   I believe in the Holy Ghost;
       the holy catholic church;
       the communion of saints;
       the forgiveness of sins;
       the resurrection of the body;
       and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offertory
*Doxology Hymn #606
    Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host;
    praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Offertory Prayer
Almighty God, we offer our gifts in gratitude this morning – not just for what you do in our lives, but for who You are in
our lives. You are with us in the person of the Father, the God above us. You come to meet us as the Son, as God
beside us. You empower us to do the work of kingdom-building by the Holy Spirit, God within us, providing strength
and boldness that we would never find on our own. May these gifts be tools that make the transformation of the world a
reality. We pray in the name of one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. (Matthew 28:16-20)

*Hymn #388 “O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”
   1 1 O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!
   America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with *brotherhood from sea to shining sea!
   2 O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than
   life! America! America! God mend thine every flaw; confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law!
   3 O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!
   America! America! May God thy gold refine till all success be nobleness and every gain divine!

*Benediction

                                                      Year of Equality
“Whenever the white man treats the Indian as they treat each other then we shall have no more wars. We shall be all
alike - brothers of one father and mother, with one sky above us and one country around us and one government for
all. Then the Great Spirit Chief who rules above will smile upon this land and send rain to wash out the bloody spots
made by brothers’ hands upon the face of the earth. For this time the Indian race are waiting and praying. I hope that no
more groans of wounded men and women will ever go to the ear of the Great Spirit Chief above, and that all people
may be one people.” - Chief Joseph, leader of the Wal-lam-wat-kain band of the Nez Perce tribe, 1879
