Worship – May 23rd, 2021 Opening Announcements & Welcome • Pastor Tim Spiegelberg Please Stand Opening Song: “All Creatures of Our God and King” 2
Invocation & Confession Pastor: We make our beginning in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Pastor: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. All: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, for sins of habit and sins of choice, for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, you should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake. All: (take a few moments of silence for personal repentance) Pastor: Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear Christ’s words to you: “I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.” Prayer of the Day Pastor: Lord as we witness Pentecost remind us that you change hearts every day. Your Word and forgiveness is shared through us. Give us opportunities to share your love with our world. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 3
Be Seated Children’s Lesson Gather your kids for the Children’s lesson. This message from Pastor Jason is aimed at the youngest among us. It presents a singular Gospel message and often includes an object lesson. Lastly a fruit snack or snack at the end is always appreciated by the little ones. Children’s Song: “Jesus Loves Me” God’s Word First Lesson: Acts 2:1-12, 36-47 W hen the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy 4
Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and 5
enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Please Stand Gospel Lesson: John 14:25-27 For centuries Christians around the world have traditionally stood during the reading of the Gospel out of reverence to Christ. It is said that wars would stop, soldiers would lay down their weapons & shields, & kings would remove their crowns as they listened to the Words of Jesus. A ll this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. Be Seated Sermon Song: “I Love to Tell the Story” 6
Sermon Pastoral Address: ”A Moveable Feast“, John 14, Pastor Tim Sermon Notes 7
Apostles Creed All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Categories will generally fall into the following areas; 12
o Skilled/Semi-Skilled Labor – Maybe you’ve done home renovations, have construction background or are strong and handy. We have interior work that can be done. Cutting, nailing, installation. Use of power tools, measuring, cutting and general construction skills would be used. o Landscaping – This area of work is immediate and ongoing. Landscaping needs such as trenching, rock spreading, weed barrier installation, tree and shrub installation are a few of the tasks. Skill isn’t as necessary but a string back is J o Grounds Keeping – This is for just general grounds keeping such as trash pick-up, weed pulling, and branch removal. Less skill and back but incredibly useful and constantly necessary on a 3 ½ acre property. Building Project F.A.Q’s A rolling list of frequently asked questions. What will ministries and programs look like when our buildings done? The CVL you knew and loved pre-pandemic will be back, plus some extras. Carbon Kids will return during worship to make sure your little ones hear about Jesus. A few new additions will be Sunday Bible study after worship. Additionally, in the coming year Grief Share, a group catering to those who are widowers or have suffered loss. Java & Juice, a drop in mom/dad and toddler play time during the week. Financial Peace University, exploring how to use our finances to God’s glory. A Marriage Enrichment Weekend, strengthening our marital relationships and a summer Obstacle Course Camp for our kids and kids in the community. 13
What’s going in the old sections where the plants drained when it was a nursery? Rather than pretend our building wasn’t a plant nursery you’ll see some echoes of its past. The floor area in the entryway is one such are. We will be inlaying boxcar flooring in those spots to remind us of the buildings past purpose. Additionally, the boxcar flooring is a reminder of Carbon Valley’s past as coal mining towns. What chairs are going in the sanctuary? Those haven’t been chosen yet so please chime in. You’ll find four options at church on Sundays. We will be buying 85-90% of them without arms but also some with arms for those who like something to grab ahold of when you get up. What flooring will we have? Due to Colorado state law the preschool side of our facility has to have washable hard surfaces. The southern, preschool building will have 14mm waterproof laminate flooring. It has a wood look to it which brings beauty but also durability. The sanctuary will be carpet tiles. You’ve seen those samples over the past few Sundays. They help with acoustics, kid’s sippy cups dropping and even high heels. They also are affordable and easily replaced if stained. The entryway will have a combination of polished concrete and inlaid boxcar flooring. In addition to reminding us of the nursery past the entryway will be incredibly durable for those days we track the weather in with us. How many bathrooms will we have? The short answer is way more bathrooms than we ever will need. Again, due to Colorado State laws about preschools three of the five classrooms will have bathrooms. Additionally, we will have to large multi stall bathrooms, a family restroom for nursing etc, and two unisex bathrooms in the sanctuary for us only when the preschool side isn’t available. 14
What will the patio and landscaping look like? Outside we have our wonderful patio area which we’ll make use of when the weather is nice. We received a grant to purchase outdoor furnishings for that area. Secondly, we will have three rectangles of artificial turf. The kids can play on them, we can have Bible class on them or even a potluck. The best part is they don’t need to be mowed J Lastly the landscaping makes use of the pre-existing foliage and adds where parts are missing. The Town of Firestone has specific codes concerning acreage and foliage which we are required to adhere to. In short it will be beautiful. Will we have a cross? Absolutely. Two 8-foot backlit crosses will be attached to the windowed gable peaks on the East and West of our building. A great way to witness and make sure everyone knows we are a church. Secondly, we’re working with a group called Design Fugitives who are working on a mural which will be behind our altar area. Concepts for those will be coming soon. When will our church be done? We are pushing for the end of July. The pandemic has delayed construction all across America and we weren’t immune but our crew is working hard. You should see rapid changes over the next couple months as we work to move swiftly to meet our projected occupancy date. Of course, prayers are welcome J 15
