                   Fifth SUNDAY OF LENT —MARCH 21, 2021
On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, John the Evangelist draws our attention with a curious
detail: some “Greeks”, of the Jewish religion, who have come to Jerusalem for the feast
of Passover, turn to Philip and say to him: “We wish to see Jesus” (Jn 12:21). There
are many people in the holy city, where Jesus has come for the last time, there are
many people. There are the little ones and the simple ones, who have warmly
welcomed the Prophet of Nazareth, recognizing Him as the Messenger of the Lord.
There are the High Priests and the leaders of the people, who want to eliminate Him
because they consider him a heretic and dangerous. There are also people, like those
“Greeks”, who are curious to see Him and to know more about his person and about
the works He has performed, the last of which — the resurrection of Lazarus — has
caused quite a stir. Responding indirectly, in a prophetic way, to that request to be
able to see Him, Jesus pronounces a prophecy that reveals his identity and shows the
path to know Him truly: “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified” (Jn
12:23). It is the hour of the Cross! It is the time for the defeat of Satan, prince of evil,
and of the definitive triumph of the merciful love of God. Christ declares that He will be
“lifted up from the earth” (v. 32), an expression with a twofold meaning: “lifted”
because He is crucified, and “lifted” because He is exalted by the Father in the
Resurrection, to draw everyone to Him and to reconcile mankind with God and among
themselves. The hour of the Cross, the darkest in history, is also the source of
salvation for those who believe in Him.
Continuing in his prophecy of the imminent Passover, Jesus uses a simple and
suggestive image, that of the “‘grain of wheat’ that, once fallen into the earth, dies in
order to bear fruit (cf. v. 24). In this image we find another aspect of the Cross of
Christ: that of fruitfulness. The death of Jesus, in fact, is an inexhaustible source of
new life, because it carries within itself the regenerative strength of God ’s love.
Immersed in this love through Baptism, Christians can become “grains of wheat” and
bear much fruit if they, like Jesus, “lose their life” out of love for God and brothers and
sisters (cf. v. 25).
For this reason, to those who, today too, “wish to see Jesus”, to those who are
searching for the face of God; to those who received catechesis when they were little
and then developed it no further and perhaps have lost their faith; to so many who
have not yet encountered Jesus personally…; to all these people we can offer three
things: the Gospel, the Crucifix and the witness of our faith, poor but sincere. The
Gospel: there we can encounter Jesus, listen to Him, know Him. The Crucifix: the sign
of the love of Jesus who gave Himself for us. And then a faith that is expressed in
simple gestures of fraternal charity. But mainly in the coherence of life, between what
we say and what we do. Coherence between our faith and our life, between our words
and our actions: Gospel, Crucifix, Witness.
May Our Lady help us to bring these three things forth.

En este quinto domingo de Cuaresma, el evangelista Juan nos llama la atención
con un particular curioso: algunos «griegos», de religión judía, llegados a
Jerusalén para la fiesta de la Pascua, se dirigen al apóstol Felipe y le dicen:
«Queremos ver a Jesús» (Jn 12, 21). En la ciudad santa, donde Jesús fue por
última vez, hay mucha gente. Están los pequeños y los sencillos, que han acogido
festivamente al profeta de Nazaret reconociendo en Él al Enviado del Señor. Están
los sumos sacerdotes y los líderes del pueblo, que lo quieren eliminar porque lo
consideran herético y peligroso. También hay personas, como esos «griegos», que
tienen curiosidad por verlo y por saber más acerca de su persona y de las obras
realizadas por Él, la última de las cuales —la resurrección de Lázaro— causó mucha
sensación.
Respondiendo indirectamente, de modo profético, a aquel pedido de poderlo ver,
Jesús pronuncia una profecía que revela su identidad e indica el camino para
conocerlo verdaderamente: «Ha llegado la hora de que sea glorificado el Hijo del
hombre» (Jn 12, 23). ¡Es la hora de la Cruz! Es la hora de la derrota de Satanás,
príncipe del mal, y del triunfo definitivo del amor misericordioso de Dios. Cristo
declara que será «levantado sobre la tierra» (v. 32), una expresión con doble
significado: «levantado» en cuanto crucificado, y «levantado» porque fue exaltado
por el Padre en la Resurrección, para atraer a todos hacia sí y reconciliar a los
hombres con Dios y entre ellos. La hora de la Cruz, la más oscura de la historia, es
también la fuente de salvación para todos los que creen en Él.
Continuando con la profecía sobre su Pascua ya inminente, Jesús usa una imagen
sencilla y sugestiva, la del «grano de trigo» que, al caer en la tierra, muere para
dar fruto (cf. v. 24). En esta imagen encontramos otro aspecto de la Cruz de
Cristo: el de la fecundidad. La cruz de Cristo es fecunda. La muerte de Jesús, de
hecho, es una fuente inagotable de vida nueva, porque lleva en sí la fuerza
regeneradora del amor de Dios. Inmersos en este amor por el Bautismo, los
cristianos pueden convertirse en «granos de trigo» y dar mucho fruto si, al igual
que Jesús, «pierden la propia vida» por amor a Dios y a los hermanos (cf. v. 25).
Por este motivo, a aquellos que también hoy «quieren ver a Jesús», a los que
están en búsqueda del rostro de Dios; a quien recibió una catequesis cuando era
pequeño y luego no la profundizó más y quizá ha perdido la fe; a muchos que aún
no han encontrado a Jesús personalmente...; a todas estas personas podemos
ofrecerles tres cosas: el Evangelio; el Crucifijo y el testimonio de nuestra fe, pobre
pero sincera. El Evangelio: ahí podemos encontrar a Jesús, escucharlo, conocerlo.
El Crucifijo: signo del amor de Jesús que se entregó por nosotros. Y luego, una fe
que se traduce en gestos sencillos de caridad fraterna. Pero principalmente en la
coherencia de vida: entre lo que decimos y lo que vivimos, coherencia entre
nuestra fe y nuestra vida, entre nuestras palabras y nuestras acciones. Evangelio,
Crucifijo y testimonio. Que la Virgen nos ayude a llevar estas tres cosas.

Holy Week and the Easter Triduum 2021
In keeping with the recent instructions forwarded to Bishops and Episcopal Conferences by the
Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments (Prot. N. 96/21) and in view of the current "Red
Zone" designation of almost all regions in the Diocese of Hamilton, the following protocols are to be
observed for the liturgical rites of Holy Week and the Easter Triduum this year.

The current protocols in place because of Covid and its variant strains require us to celebrate the
Holy Week and Triduum liturgies simply this year. We look forward to next year, when we
hopefully will be able to celebrate with greater solemnity.

Following pandemic directions, we are still allowed 30% capacity for the Holy Week's celebrations.
No registration is required. It is recommended to arrive early. The church will close when it fills with
the allowed capacity.

Palm Sunday:
Palms are not distributed. Mass will be in the usual manners as on the other Sundays of Lent.

Holy Thursday - Mass of the Lord's Supper:
The washing of feet is omitted. The Communion Rites takes place in the usual manner in accord with
Covid protocols. The Body of Christ is received in the hand only and Communion from the chalice is
not permitted.
There is not procession with the Blessed Sacrament at the conclusion of the liturgy.
The assembly leaves the church immediately following the departure of the priest form the sanctuary.
There is no period of adoration following the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament.

Good Friday - The Celebration of the Passion of the Lord:
The celebration of the Passion of the Lord begins with the priest alone approaching the sanctuary
and prostrating himself as the assembly kneels for silence prayers.
For the Veneration of the Cross, it will be placed in a stand with lighted candles on each side. The
priest and people kneel for a moment of silent prayer and then the priest alone kisses the Cross
before proceeding to the altar for the Communion Rite.

Easter Vigil in the Holy Night:
Gathering around a fire outside the church is not permitted. A simple Easter fire will be prepared in
the church from which the Paschal candle is lighted.
Candles for the assembly will be on the table at the main entrance of the church. Parishioners are
asked to take the candles home after Mass.
There is no sprinkling of the assembly with blessed water.

Easter Sunday Mass:
For this year, the sprinkling of the assembly is omitted.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is still to be celebrated by appointment only.

Parishioners are reminded of the Instruction from the Apostolic Penitentiary (March 19, 2020)
regarding the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the Present Emergency of the Coronavirus:

“Where the faithful should be in the painful impossibility of receiving sacramental absolution, it should be
remembered that perfect contrition, coming from the love of God, loved above all else, expressed by a sincere
request for forgiveness (one which the penitent is able to express in that moment) and accompanied by the
votum confession, that is, by the firm resolution to receive sacramental confession a soon as possible, obtains
the forgiveness of sins, even ones. (cf. ccc. N. 1452)”

Semana Santa y Triduo Pascual 2021
De acuerdo con las instrucciones recientes enviadas a los obispos y conferencias episcopales por la
Congregación para el Culto Divino y los Sacramentos (Prot. N. 96/21) y en vista de la designación
actual de "Zona Roja" de casi todas las regiones de la Diócesis de Hamilton, se deben observar los
siguientes protocolos para los ritos litúrgicos de la Semana Santa y el Triduo Pascual de este año.

Los protocolos actuales implementados debido a Covid y sus variantes requieren que celebremos
las liturgias de Semana Santa y Triduo Pascual de foma simple este año. Tenemos la esperanza
de que el próximo año podremos celebrarla con mayor solemnidad.

Siguiendo las instrucciones de la pandemia, se nos sigue permitiendo un 30% de capacidad. Para la
participación en las celebraciones de la Semana Santa no hace falta registrarse, por lo que se
recomienda llegar temprano. La iglesia se cerrará cuando se llene con la capacidad permitida.

Domingo de Ramos:
No se darán palmas este año. La Misa será como los demás domingos de Cuaresma.

Jueves Santo - Misa de la Cena del Señor:
No se tendrá el rito del Lavado de los pies. La recepción de la Comunión se hará de acuerdo a los
protocolos del Covid. El Cuerpo de Cristo se recibe sólo en la mano y no se permite la Comunión del
cáliz.
No hay procesión con el Santísimo Sacramento al concluir la liturgia.
La Misa termina inmediatamente después de la salida del sacerdote del santuario.
Este año no es posible tener tiempo de adoración después de la reserva del Santísimo Sacramento.

Viernes Santo - Celebración de la Pasión del Señor:
La celebración de la Pasión del Señor comienza con la procesión del sacerdote, que se postrará
ante el altar, mientras la comunidad se arrodilla para orar en silencio.
Para la Veneración de la Cruz se le colocará cerca del altar en un soporte con velas encendidas a
cada lado. El sacerdote y la congregación se arrodillan para un momento de oración en silencio.
Sólo el sacerdote venera la Cruz con un beso y luego se dirige al altar para el Rito de la Comunión.

Vigilia Pascual:
No habrá la bendición del fuego fuera de la iglesia.
Se preparará un pequeño fuego pascual en la iglesia, desde donde se encienderá el Cirio Pascual.
Las velas para la comunidad se distribuiran en la entrada. Se les pide que se lleven la vela consigo
después de la misa.
No habrá aspersión con agua bendita.

Misa del Domingo de Pascua:
Para este año, se omite la aspersión del agua bendita.

El Sacramento de la Reconciliación se sigue celebrando sólo con cita previa. Recordemos lo que se
nos dijo en la Instrucción de la Penitenciaría Apostólica (19 de marzo de 2020) sobre el Sacramento
de la Reconciliación en la Emergencia Actual del Coronavirus:
“Donde los fieles se encuentren en la dolorosa imposibilidad de recibir la absolución sacramental, conviene
recordar que la contrición perfecta, procedente del amor de Dios, amado sobre todas las cosas, expresada
por una sincera petición de perdón (que el penitente puede expresarse en ese momento) y acompañado de
la confesión votum, es decir, de la firme resolución de recibir cuanto antes la confesión sacramental, se
obtiene el perdón de los pecados. (cf. ccc. N. 1452) ”

                         Solidarity Sunday!
5th Sunday of Lent (John 12:20-33)
     “24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies,
           it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Today is Solidarity Sunday. It is a day that was set aside by the Canadian
Bishops when they created Development and Peace, a day for all Canadian
Catholics to reflect on how we love our sisters and brothers around the world and
to share what we can to help those who are most vulnerable.

Living in Solidarity means dedicating ourselves to the wellbeing of our sisters and
brothers – to take up the struggles they face as our own, to share in the
celebration, the pain, the joy, and the journey together. We learn from each other,
offering what we have for the common good, and being willing to listen and
adjust our practices for the benefit of our sisters and brothers.

Solidarity is a way of loving each other – of willing the good of the other person,
and working for it too. Sometimes this means we have to let go our own comforts
and the convenient options, choosing to do what is better for others and our
planet instead. When it comes to building peace, this means that we may need to
let go of our egos, adjust our expectations, and make room for others in our
hopes and dreams.

By living charitably and compassionately towards others and ensuring justice and
fairness in how we treat each other, we can really build peace together.
Discussion Questions: In what area of our lives can we more deeply enter into
solidarity by learning, praying and acting? (eating and purchases locally, making
our house a bottled water free zone, advocating for our government to support a
just recovery after the pandemic, etc?)
