MOUNTAINVIEW NEWS AND REVIEWS MAY 2021 INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT MAY May 1st : May Day celebrations are thrown to honor the spring season in the Northern hemisphere. Some traditions include dancing around the maypole, indulging in treats, and showering loved ones with gifts. During the 19th century, May Day took on a new meaning. Born out of the movement for better working conditions, International Work- ers' Day was created to raise awareness of poor conditions. May 4th: National Bird Day. Many birds fly thousands of miles to migrate, and they're descendants of dinosaurs. Some species can even develop a robust vocabulary of human words. Celebrate Bird Day by giving some tasty treats to our feathered friends. May 5th: Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It has evolved into a day of celebrating Mexican culture. We will be enjoying margarita’s with our Ice Cream Social May 8th :After weeks of spring showers, it's finally time to celebrate May flowers. In particular, irises deserve a special day. They are stunning flowers that add drama to spring floral arrangements or a perennial flower garden. The most important of all: May 9th Mothers Day, From being supportive to teaching important life skills, there are countless reasons why mothers are the best. Treat your mom or a maternal figure in your life to a face time phone call or letter to show her how much you appreciate everything she does. May 12: Limericks are quirky, funny poems in which the first two lines rhyme with the fifth line, and the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other. Try your hand at writing some of your own five-line poems to celebrate National Limerick Day. May 23rd: With their pre-historic appearance, turtles are very interesting creatures. Some species can even live for 100 years. Take some time on World Turtle Day to learn more about these fascinating reptiles. May 25th: National Wine Day gives you a pretty good reason to indulge in a glass of wine. Pour a glass from your favorite bottle, or try a completely new varietal. You can also have fun serving themed flights (a sampling of various wines) from specific re- gions of the world. The Terrace will be having a Wine Tasting at 2:00 cost is $10.

How are YOU? This year has surely put a strain and heavy burden on our physical and mental health. From lock downs, restrictions, home schooling, working from home, isolation and wearing masks! (I never imagined in my life time that masks would be a mandatory part of my day) Who would have thought that stores would be closed, borders would have restrictions, shopping for basic necessities would become a challenge, or gas prices would plunge; then of course become high again & housing prices would double in a time when more and more businesses are closing down. Its hard watching or hearing our children or grandchildren struggle during this time, we just want to fix it. For a lot of us it is over- whelming and we just want to hide away from it all. We may be staying in our rooms in- stead of going for walks or joining activities. Sometimes its easier to not participate, but this can lead to other problems (including health issues) Many residents may be feeling the extra strain of missing family members and friends. This has put a toll on all of us as we try to understand what is happening around us. We cannot change the Pandemic but we can change how we are dealing with it. We can be positive, we can ask for help, we can talk to our families, friends and care givers, we can take walks and see beautiful scenery around us. We can also look for the helpers, we can be kind, we can be consid- erate and patient. We can do so much more than we think. There is light, laughter and feelings of joy even during this time. For some of us though it may not be that easy and we may need some coping tools. There is help for you. If you are feeling sad, restless, frustrated or lonely please reach out to ext 1512 so we may help find ways to help you. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER

Intergeneration Project with CTK Students Once again it is that time of year when we get to share our stories with the students of CTK. It’s a good feeling to know that some traditions are still happening even if modi- fied. We are hoping that our students will be able to come visit us by the end of June weather permitted. For this years Intergeneration Program we will be communicating through email and possibly zoom calls. LE staff will receive the emails from students, will sit with the residents to complete the questions and will email the students back. With this in mind we are asking residents who are part of this program (and family members if they wish) to contribute photos, memorabilia or special keepsakes (photos of them). The students will gather information about your childhood, teenage years, college/ career, marriage and family life and retirement. Staff will forward all information to the students to help them compile a story board of your life to share with others. The best part of growing is the experiences we get along the way.
MOUNTAINVIEW RESIDENCE AND TERRACE VOLUME 9 ISSUE 5 page 4 HAPPY NURSES WEEK! To all the Nurses, PSWs & Caregivers at Mountainview. Thank you for your compan- ionate care to our Mountainview family and the countless others you have helped dur- ing the past years of service to the community. Your hard work and dedication is an inspiration to us all. Every minute of every day, a nurse somewhere brings a smile, shares a problem, eases a pain, and makes a special difference. Thank you for being that kind of person. Please take a moment to thank your care giver. A Mother’s Love A Mother’s love is something that no one can explain, It is made of deep devotion, and of sacrifice and pain, It is endless and unselfish, and enduring come what may, For nothing can destroy it, or take that love away, It is patient and forgiving, when all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking, It believes beyond believing, when the world around condemns , And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems, It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, And it still remains a secret, like the mysteries of creation, A many splendored miracle, man cannot understand And another wondrous evidence, of God’s tender guiding hand. -Helen Steiner Rice
MOUNTAINVIEW RESIDENCE AND TERRACE VOLUME 9 ISSUE 5 page 5 April Highlights Easter weekend was fun-filled for both staff and residents. The Easter bunny was deemed an essential worker once again, and of course she had to stop by Mountain- view. Congratulations to all those who won the Easter egg scavenger hunt! A big thank you Sheridan Nursery for the lovely hydrangea donations. The bright pink, white & blue hues sure brightened up the residents' rooms and brought joy to all. A little bit of TIM”S goes a long way to brighten up anyone's day! We are greatly en- joying our Tim Hortons Social’s every other week. A little bit of coffee and conversation goes a long way. And a big thank you to the students at CTK for organizing and personally writing notes to each of us! Well done Kimberly De Oliveira and the Student Senate! Did someone ask for ICE CREAM! It was a “just because” kind of day that brought ice cream treats to everyone's door.
