2021 CALIFORNIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS APPENDIX 3 – SPORTS MEDICINE The Athletic Training Room is located up the hill behind home plate, immediately across from the gravel road. The host Athletic Trainer will be available 2 hours prior to the first game, and throughout the day for game coverage. In the absence of the team’s athletic trainer, a written letter stating treatment protocols should accompany the team. Please also remember to have team insurance forms and emergency contact information for all athletes in the event referral to a medical facility is required. Ice bags and wrap will be available behind the first base dugout and/or in the Athletic Training Room. Below you will find our concussion protocol, emergency action plan, and lightning policy. Please familiarize yourself with the material Concussion Policy Any student-athlete suspected of a concussion will be evaluated by the host Athletic Trainer and/or visiting teams Athletic Trainer. An evaluation will be completed using a SCAT5 form. If the Athletic Trainer suspects a concussion, the student-athlete will be immediately removed from play and will not return. Return To Play Protocol 1. Once the student athlete is asymptomatic, they will need to be cleared by the team physician(s). Only the Simpson University team physician(s) will clear the student-athlete for return to play. Return to Play Protocol (RTPP) will be administered and supervised by the Athletic Trainer. 2. The Graduated RTPP is as follows: 1. Step 1 (Day 1) – light aerobic exercise – supervised by ATC 2. Step 2 (Day 2) – anaerobic exercise; running, cutting, jumping, etc. – supervised by ATC 3. Step 3 (Day 3) – sport specific activities – supervised by ATC 4. Step 4 (Day 4) – non-contact practice 5. Step 5 (Day 5) –controlled return to full contact practice and monitoring for symptoms If at any step the student athlete exhibits return of symptoms the RTPP is stopped and does not restart until the student athlete has been asymptomatic for at least 1-2 days, based on the discretion of the Athletic Trainer and Team Physician. Lightning Policy At all Simpson University Regular Season and Championship Events, the host Athletic Trainer, in collaboration with the Director of Athletics, has the unchallengeable authority to postpone any contest due to the threat of lightning. Additionally, the Athletic Trainer has the lone authority to restart the postponed contest after consulting with game administrators and officials. The National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) recommends that by the time the “flash-to-bang” reaches 30 seconds, all individuals should have left the field of play to a shelter. The Athletic Trainer will monitor weather/storm conditions with technology and will utilize the “flash-to-bang” method to determine when evacuation is necessary. The Athletic Trainer will communicate with coaches, officials, and game management staff to inform all players and fans of the current danger and the need to find shelter. Shelter will be established prior to practice or competition. The Athletic Trainer will ensure that at least 30 minutes has passed, and that there is no current lightning threat before permitting return to the field of play. The Simpson University Athletic Trainer has the authority, in cases where this decision is questioned by an official, administrator, or opposing coach, to remove their respective team from the playing field. This decision will be fully supported by the Simpson University Athletics Department and the California Pacific Conference. 17
