END OF SCHOOL DAY PRAYER My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. (Saint Alphonsus Liguori) 6
EXAMEN (Saint Ignatius five step daily routine) Give thanksgiving. I begin by giving God thanks for all the things I’m grateful for today. I allow my mind to wander as I reflect on the ways God has blessed me on this particular day. I allow big things and small things to arise—everything from the gift of my faith, to the gift of my marriage, to the easy commute to work today. Ask for the Spirit. Next, I want to look at the moments in my day when I did not act so well. However, before doing so, I ask God to fill me with his Spirit so that the Spirit can lead me through this difficult soul-searching. Otherwise, I’m liable to hide in denial, wallow in self-pity, or seethe in self-loathing. Review and recognize failures. I look back at my day and ask the Lord to point out to me the moments when I have failed in big ways or small. I take a sobering look at the mistakes I’ve made this day. Ask for forgiveness and healing. If I have sinned, I ask God to forgive me and set me straight again. If I have not sinned but simply made a mistake, I ask for healing of any harm that might have been done. I ask for help to get over it and move on. I also ask for wisdom to discern how l might better handle such tricky moments in the future. Pray about the next day. I ask God to show me how tomorrow might go. I imagine the things I’ll be doing, the people I’ll see, and the decisions I’ll be mulling over. I ask for help with any moments I foresee that might be difficult. I especially ask for help in moments when I might be tempted to fail in the way I did today. ● Relish the moments that went well and all of the gifts I have today. ● Request the Spirit to lead me through my review of the day. ● Review the day. ● Repent of any mistakes or failures. ● Resolve, in concrete ways, to live tomorrow well. 7
ACT OF CONTRITION My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. 8
CREEDS NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9
APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. 10
GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, We adore you, We glorify you, We give you thanks for your great glory Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty father. you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the holy one, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. 11
PEACE PRAYER OF SAINT FRANCIS Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. 12
AN ACT OF CONSECRATION TO MARY O my Queen, O my Mother, I love you and give myself to you. I give to you this day my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole self. Since I am yours, keep me and guard me as your child forever. Amen. HAIL, HOLY QUEEN Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, the children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this land of exile. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; lead us home at last and show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus: O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. 13
MAGNIFICAT My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever. 14
MEMORARE Remember, most loving Virgin Mary, never was it heard that anyone who turned to you for help was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, though burdened by my sins, I run to your protection for you are my mother. Mother of the Word of God, do not despise my words of pleading but be merciful and hear my prayer. Amen. PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 15
PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH, THE PROTECTOR OF THE CHURCH Father, you entrusted our Savior to the care of Saint Joseph. By the help of his prayers may your Church continue to serve its Lord, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. ACT OF FAITH O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the holy Catholic Church teaches, because you have revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen. ACT OF HOPE O my God, relying on your infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen. ACT OF LOVE O my God, I love you above all things with my whole heart and soul, because you are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me and I ask pardon of those whom I have injured. Amen. AN ACT OF FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE Jesus, I believe in you. Jesus, I hope in you. Jesus, I love you. 16
MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY The Church has used three sets of mysteries for many centuries. In 2002 Pope John Paul II proposed a fourth set of mysteries—the Mysteries of Light, or Luminous Mysteries. According to his suggestion, the four sets of mysteries might be prayed on the following days: the Joyful Mysteries on Monday and Saturday, the Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesday and Friday, the Glorious Mysteries on Wednesday and Sunday, and the Luminous Mysteries on Thursday. The Joyful Mysteries 1. The Annunciation Mary learns that she has been chosen to be the mother of Jesus. 2. The Visitation Mary visits Elizabeth, who tells her that she will always be remembered. 3. The Institution of the Eucharist Jesus offers his Body and Blood at the Last Supper. 17
The Sorrowful Mysteries 1. The Agony in the Garden Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before he dies. 2. The Scourging at the Pillar Jesus is lashed with whips. 3. The Crowning With Thorns Jesus is mocked and crowned with thorns. 4. The Carrying of the Cross Jesus carries the cross that will be used to crucify him. 5. The Crucifixion Jesus is nailed to the cross and dies. The Glorious Mysteries 1. The Resurrection God the Father raises Jesus from the dead. 2. The Ascension Jesus returns to his Father in heaven. 3. The Coming of the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit comes to bring new life to the disciples. 4. The Assumption of Mary At the end of her life on earth, Mary is taken body and soul into heaven. 5. The Coronation of Mary Mary is crowned as Queen of Heaven and Earth. 18
THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross became part of every Catholic Church so that the Faithful could “walk the way of the cross in our own parishes and schools. The Stations are especially part of our Lenten preparation for Easter. After each Station title is read, all participants respond, “We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.” 1 Jesus is condemned to die. 2 Jesus takes up his cross. 3 Jesus falls for the first time. 4 Jesus meets his mother. 5 Simon helps Jesus carry his cross. 6 Veronica wipes the face of Jesus. 7 Jesus falls the second time. 8 Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem. 9 Jesus falls for the third time. 10 Jesus is stripped of his garments 11 Jesus is nailed to the cross. 12 Jesus dies on the cross. 13 Jesus is taken down from the cross. 14 Jesus is laid in the tomb. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS 1 I, the Lord, am your God, You shall not have other gods besides me. 2 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God, in vain. 3 Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. 4 Honor your father and your mother. 5 You shall not kill. 6 You shall not commit adultery. 7 You shall not steal. 8 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 9 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. 10 You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor. 19
THE BEATITUDES The Beatitudes are the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-10). Jesus teaches us that if we live according to the Beatitudes, we will live a happy Christian life. The Beatitudes fulfill God’s promises made to Abraham and his descendants and describe the rewards that will be ours as loyal followers of Christ. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are they who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God. Blessed are those persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of God. PRECEPTS OF THE CHURCH The Precepts of the Church describe the minimum effort we must make in prayer and in living a moral life. All Catholics are called to move beyond the minimum by growing in love of God and love of neighbor. The Precepts are as follows: 1. Attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation 2. Confession of serious sin at least once a year 3. Reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season 4. Observance of the days of fast and abstinence 5. Providing for the needs of the Church THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT 20
In the Book of Isaiah 11:2-3, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are described. In the passage the gifts are considered ones that the Messiah would have possessed. Through Jesus, we also receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Wisdom helps us recognize the importance of others and the importance of keeping God central in our lives. Understanding is the ability to comprehend the meaning of God's message. Knowledge is the ability to think about and explore God's revelation, and also to recognize there are mysteries of faith beyond us. Counsel/Right Judgment is the ability to see the best way to follow God's plan when we have choices that relate to him. Fortitude also known as Courage is the courage to do what one knows is right. Piety also known as Reverence helps us pray to God in true devotion. Fear of the Lord also known as Wonder And Awe is the feeling of amazement before God, who is all-present, and whose friendship we do not want to lose. THE FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT “Just so, every good tree bears good fruit, and a rotten tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them.” (Matthew 7:17-20) This passage in Matthew's Gospel helps us to understand the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are the observable behaviors of people who have allowed the grace of the Holy Spirit to be effective in them. The tradition of the Church lists 12 fruits: Charity Generosity Joy Gentleness Peace Faithfulness Patience Modesty Kindness (adapted from CCC 1832) THE CAPITAL VIRTUES 1. Humility 2. Generosity 21
3. Chastity 4. Mildness 5. Temperance 6. Friendship 7. Diligence THE CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY The Corporal Works of Mercy are these kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their material and physical needs. ● feed the hungry ● shelter the homeless ● clothe the naked ● visit the sick and imprisoned ● bury the dead ● give alms to the poor THE SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY The Spiritual Works of Mercy are acts of compassion, as listed below, by which we help our neighbors with their emotional and spiritual needs. ● instruct ● advise ● console ● comfort ● forgive ● bear wrongs patiently 22
