We listen for what Thanks be to God. God is saying to God’s people through scripture, ANTHEM song, and sermon. The Greatest Gift setting by Thomas Pavlechko (b. 1962) Patty Philipps, soprano Nan Wooten, alto Three precious gifts the Spirit gives: a changeless faith no power can move; abiding hope through every trial; greatest of all, unfailing love. The noblest speech, the bravest deed, wise prophecy or quenchless faith, when not by love’s kind wisdom led, are noisy gong or empty breath. For love is patient, love is kind, is slow to anger, is not proud, is not resentful, does not boast, is quick to speak a healing word. Love does not seek to have its way, does not rejoice at evil deeds, but looks for truth and works for good, and walks the way that kindness leads. O Spirit, Giver of our lives, source of all blessings our to share, teach us to live through all our days, your love’s example in your care. -Joy F. Patterson, based on 1 Corinthians 13 NEW TESTAMENT READING: Philippians 4:4-13 Large Print Pew Bible, page 242 Pew Bible, page 198 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

You Asked for It! - Summer Worship Series - 10:00 a.m. We have begun a summer worship series entitled, “You Asked for It!” A couple of months ago, we asked you to suggest a title for one of our summer sermons—and the response was incredible. Your church staff had a difficult time selecting just 12 from all of the suggestions. As you will see from the list below, many of the sermon titles reflect what we have all encountered during the pandem- ic. The preacher was responsible for picking a text for each title, so it will be interesting to see where he/she goes with it. Join us each week either in-person or by livestreaming. Matthew 25 in the PC(USA): A bold vision and invitation We are a Matthew 25 church! Our congregation has accepted the PC(USA)’s invitation to follow Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 25:31–46 by becoming active disciples and making a difference in our community and the world. As part of our Matthew 25 commitment, we pledge to embrace one or more of these three areas of focus: • Building congregational vitality by deepening and energizing our faith and growing as joyful leaders and disciples actively engaged with our community as we share the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed • Dismantling structural racism by fearlessly applying our faith to advocate and break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color • Eradicating systemic poverty by acting on our beliefs and working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor. To learn more and for ideas on how to get involved and do your vital part as a member of a Matthew 25 church, please visit pcusa.org/matthew25. FPC Vision Statement First Presbyterian Church recognizes that God is on the move, and our church, inspired by God’s Holy Spirit, will continue to grow in God’s love and the example of Jesus Christ as we minister to each other, the community, and the world. Guided by God’s calling for our church and each of us as individuals, we will advance God’s mission more fully by: Cultivating a nurturing community, Discovering new expressions of faith through worship and music while preserving holy traditions, Regularly assessing how we need to change in order to sustain our partnership with God’s mission for years to come, and Engaging in the spiritual, physical, and emotional work of God’s mission.
