Strava This year we are encouraging participants to track their activity leading up to the event using the Strava app. Strava allows tracking for multiple types of activities including spinning, yoga, and fitness classes. We are planning several team challenges leading up to the event via the Strava app that will include the chance to win prizes, so download the app for your chance to win! You will need to join the JDRF FRDJ Canada Club to participate. Getting Started with Strava With Strava, you’ll use some combination of three devices: a smartphone, computer, or a fitness tracker, the most LOG IN IF YOU ARE common form of which is a AN EXISTING USER GPS watch. For smartphone use, you’ll need to have the free Strava app installed. Simply open your device’s app store (the App Store for iPhones and Google Play for Android devices), search for Strava, and download the app. On SIGN UP IF YOU ARE A NEW USER your computer, it’s even easier: Open your web browser and head to strava.com. Next, you’ll need to create your Strava account, where your workout data and public-facing profile will live. If you’d rather not create an entirely new password you’ll have to store or remember, you can use your Facebook or Google account info. If you’d rather keep things separate, perhaps for privacy or security reasons, you can start the account creation process fresh with your email. Follow the instructions— you’ll have to confirm your email or log in through the Facebook or Google platforms—and you’re in. Remember, your profile and your account are two separate things, as with all similar online services. Your account encompasses everything on Strava related to you as an individual, while your profile is simply the information (name, photo, location, etc.) that other users will see on the platform. 4
Impact, T1D and COVID-19 Our Impact At JDRF, we work tirelessly to accelerate breakthroughs to cure T1D and improve the lives of those living with the disease. We continually expand our scientific knowledge, our connections and collaborations, our partners, and our global presence to unlock the science that will stop T1D. While we fight for cures, we strive just as hard to develop therapies to help people right now with managing the disease. JDRF and our team of scientists are leading T1D research around the world. No organization is making a bigger impact on advances in this field to help people right now with managing the disease. Where Your Dollars Go JDRF has a bold plan for the future of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research in Canada. As better treatments unfold and the prospect of curing this disease rests on the horizon, we remain committed to directing more resources to launch and sustain innovative research and clinical trials from coast-to-coast. Asking Donors for Support in 2020 What do the most successful Ride fundraisers have in common? They ask as many people as possible for support by sharing the story of why they participate. We know that fundraising can be challenging right now, while being mindful to what’s going on in the world. Many members of the community are still wanting and willing to give and are looking for ways to support the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community. Before sending your fundraising request this year, you’ll want to plan who you will be reaching out to. Think about including people who have donated to you in the past such as family, friends, and others within your network who have expressed an interest in helping the T1D community during this time. No one knows your donors better than you do! Once you’ve determined who you will be reaching out to, it’s time to update your personal fundraising page. When sharing your story, consider the following questions: What is the Sun Life Ride to Defeat Diabetes for JDRF and where does the money go? What are you doing for the Ride? Why are you remaining committed to fundraising for T1D research this year? What does someone’s support mean to you this year? Mission Messages The money we raise for JDRF will change the lives of millions of people who struggle with the burden of type 1 diabetes (T1D) every day. I was debating whether to send this email, given the current environment, but I ultimately decided to because type 1 diabetes (T1D) unfortunately does not stop for anything, including pandemics. And, in fact, during such times, T1D treatment and management becomes even more difficult for many families because of insulin availability/cost and loss of income. It is with those families in mind that I gently ask you to consider donating to my JDRF Ride. Now, more than ever, we need to stand together and find cures for type 1 diabetes. With news headlines reading that “More people being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes”, it is critical to take action. Will you please join me in the fight against T1D and help fund life-saving research? I understand that this is a financially difficult time for many and truly appreciate any donation toward my Ride fundraising goal this year. There are other ways you can still support me, without giving a monetary donation now. Thanking Donors in 2020 Nothing is more important than saying thank you. Whether you give them a shout out on social media or send a handwritten note in the mail, always take the time to thank those who have supported you. Remember, you can keep track of your donors right from your Participant Centre. 6
Fundraising Online Now that fundraising has moved mostly online, it’s time to start thinking of some fun, new ideas to raise money for innovative T1D research! Fundraising Email/Letter Examples Donation and thank you templates along with vendor letters can be found in the Participant Centre. 7
Facebook and Instagram Post Templates • Unlike years past I have been very hesitant to ask for donations for the Sun Life Ride to Defeat Diabetes for JDRF in light of the current situation and almost felt guilty doing so. However, chronic conditions never take a vacation and T1D is no exception. With traditional events cancelled and sources of funding severely reduced, it is more important than ever to support non-profit organizations like JDRF who are fighting for a cure and improving lives every step of the way. Please consider making a donation to JDRF as I aim to move for a cure to bring us one step closer to a world without type 1 diabetes. I recognize we are all facing our own constraints in these times and strongly encourage you to focus on the cause(s) closest to your heart first. Any amount you have left over for JDRF is greatly appreciated. Matching Gifts Double the impact of your donations. Many employers offer matching gift programs and will match the charitable contributions or volunteer hours made by their employees. Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses and will give you up to one year after your donation to request a match. • Please refer to our matching gifts page that outlines key companies and their matching gift programs. • We encourage you to apply for your matching gift as soon as possible to ensure your funds have the best chance of arriving into your account before the fundraising deadline. It can take up to a year for a check to arrive in your account after you submit the initial request with a company. • Each company controls the schedule on which it issues matching gift checks. Many companies issue matching gift checks on a quarterly basis, while others may issue checks on a semi-annual or even annual basis. Thus, it is very important for you to familiarize yourself with a company’s matching gift policy. • While the Ride team highly encourages the use of matching gifts in fundraising, we have no control over the timing, distribution, and receipt of your matching gift. For this reason, we encourage you to supplement your fundraising efforts with matching gifts instead of relying on them. Please use the templated matching gift letter to contact your HR or corporate responsibility department. 13
