The Voice of Hope Welcoming, Worshipping, Serving January 2021 Overwhelming vote YES! Thank-you Pastor Matt Cordes for accepting the call here at Hope! We are Excited to say the least to have you here with us. Hello people of Hope, My name is Pastor Matt and I am grateful for the opportunity to join the Hope community. I love Jesus, my family, spending time in God’s beautiful creation and having faith-filled conversations. I grew up in small town Minne- sota and have spent seasons of life as a youth minister, working construction, a basketball coach, a teacher, doing campus ministry, and as an Ordained Min- ister. I love being a Pastor and I am excited to do ministry with the people of Hope. It is a privilege to get to proclaim the Good News and to be invited into the sacred spaces of people’s lives. I truly enjoy sharing the story of God’s love as well as hearing the stories of God’s people. The Church has a truly unique niche in the world to create something every human longs for, community. My sense is that Hope excels at creating community and I’m looking forward to being a part of it. In my spare time I love the outdoors, fishing, hunting and recently have become an obsessed Muskie fisherman. I also enjoy reading, movies and love the game of basketball. I have three beautiful adult daughters, Madeline 26, Annie 23, Lilly 21 and have one sweet little nugget of a granddaughter named Lola who has stolen my heart. I am looking forward to doing life with you wonderful folks. Praise the Lord! Pastor Matt

One thing for sure is that 2020 is behind us and our prayer is that we can soon return to Circle Bible Studies and gather as the People of Hope. So, as I close this year, I want to let you know that our Thankoffering for 2020 was $1,050. This is quite an increase from last year. The Yearbook for the Women of Hope will be available when we start to meet again. So, watch for more concerning this in the Voice of Hope. Barbara Lang, Women of Hope Chairperson During a pandemic how do you give a pastor a proper farewell? A drive by of course! Thank you for your wonderful leadership, compassion and humor this past year. We will miss you Pastor Larry! Larry Lundeen Serenaded us with “Go Tell it on the Mountain” via email. If you missed it let me know and I can send it to you! “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” ― Oscar Wilde. January 2021 6
Reflections By: Janette Muller A New Year is a time to reflect on the past and open our hearts and minds to new be- ginnings. My life has been filled with many new beginnings. When I was born my Dad was a Lutheran Pastor serving two congregations, Port Wing and Washburn, Wisconsin. On Reformation Sunday, October 31, 1937 I was baptized. In 1938 Dad accepted a call to Sedro Woaley, Washington and the family re-located by car with three young children. Another daughter was added to the family and life was very busy. Then World War II began, my Dad enlisted as a military chaplain and served a tour of duty in Europe. My mother was a very strong woman and she relocated the family by train to Minnesota to be near her family. It’s the only time I have lived close to extended family and I have many wonderful memories. One day when I was in third grade the teacher instructed me and my class to come to the window. There was my Dad walking toward the school! He visited my siblings and my classrooms, and we were excused to go home with him. His tour of military duty was complet- ed and he was home to stay! Dad was home and after a time of rest the family moved to Duluth where Dad was called to served as Pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church in Woodland and where I was con- firmed. Living in Duluth is one reason Ernie and I live in Minnesota today, so many wonderful memories. On my confirmation day the family moved to Iron River, Michigan. First Lutheran Church was a very active congregation, a lot of youth activities and close to Fortune Lake Bi- ble Camp. Iron River is where I became a football fan. The High School team was undefeated for four years. After graduating from high school, I attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. After my college years I moved to Chicago where I served as a Parish Worker at Irving Park Lutheran Church. At Irving Park I met and marred my husband Ernie. After years of work, travel and volunteer activities we moved to a new faith community at Hope Lutheran church. Yes, my life has had many new beginnings and God has led me through them with re- newed strength and peace. May God be with each of us as we reflect on the past and move forward into 2021.
