The simple comfortable beach front accommodation makes Wilderness Island ideal for that close to nature experience without having to forgo any small luxuries. The island is catered for with the freshest of seafood, a well-stocked larder if you’re not into seafood, and all manner of creature comforts to make your time on Wilderness Island a memorable life experience. The private secluded cabins all feature uninterrupted ocean views and comfortable sleeping arrangements either for couples or twin share. All feature huge furnished decks for you to relax on and enjoy the serenity. Our beachfront bathroom ,we believe, is one of the best showers in the world. For five months between July and November, humpback whales and their calves visit the Exmouth Gulf on their annual migration. Spend Your Time… At Wilderness Island, you have all this adventure right on your doorstep The small island offers you a true wilderness experience. With stairs directly from the camp down to the beach, you will find it easy to go exploring the unspoilt nature of Wilderness Island. Take a leisurely stroll, keeping an eye out for kangaroos, goannas and bush turkeys and watch for mud crabs, sharks and rays basking in the shallows. Numerous species of birds call the island home including galahs, corellas, honey-eaters, zebra finches and splendid fairy wrens. White breasted sea eagles and ospreys constantly hunt and roost around the camp. Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkelling equipment are available for your use and are the perfect way to explore the waters of the Exmouth Gulf and the mangrove system surrounding the island. Why not take one out to the coral bombies where you can see a myriad of fish and sea creatures. Maybe you will see some of our resident Queensland Gropers. One is around 65kg. Fishing ‘The business end of the trip’ Wilderness Island is an isolated Island located within the huge mangrove system on the east side of Exmouth Gulf in North-Western Australia. With fantastic fishing beginning right at the water’s edge, Wilderness Island offers some of the most amazing fishing anywhere in Australia. Giant Trevally, Giant Herring, Snapper, Mangrove Jack, Barramundi, Spanish Mackerel, 1m+ Queenfish, Long-tail Tuna, Cod, Bluebone, Coral Trout and Golden Trevally are some of over 52 species of fish you will encounter. As the seasons move through the year so too do the fish species, each as exciting as the last. Commonly Asked Questions Part 2 When is the best time to come? The season runs from April to October/November. Weather wise April to September are the best times but the warmer months are better for fishing. If you are interested in whale watching the Humpback whale season in the Exmouth Gulf is from late July to November. Are children welcome? We recommend children come from 4 years old and above. It’s a great place for kids. Do you have 240volt power? Yes, charging facilities for your electronic devices are available in the main camp. However, we do have limited power so please leave your hairdryer and curling irons at home. Do you have phone reception? Yes, we do have mobile phone reception. What to bring? Commonly Asked Questions Part 3 What baggage can I bring? 1 soft overnight bag and no more than 10kg personal baggage for plane transfers. Can I take fish home? Sorry, we promote “catch and release” here and don’t allow people to take fish with them. You can eat your fresh catch here though. It’s our way of protecting this amazing fishery. What fish will I catch? The Exmouth Gulf enjoys an abundant and varied marine life and you will hook a range of fantastic eating and sport fish. What fishing gear should I bring? Rods & Reels: - 2-4kg light spin outfit suitable for casting ultra light lures for bream, flathead etc - Spin or bait-caster suitable for 20lb braid for Queenies or soft plastics for creek fishing. - Spin outfit 50lb + for GTs and bigger fish - Trolling outfit 10kgs Lures: - Small minnows + small poppas for bream, flathead - Middle sized poppas (80mm) roosta’s + large for GTs - Minnows (100mm – 190mm) 1m-3m (scorpions or laserpro) - Soft plastic 5/0 hook size + ½ + ¾ OZ heads - Lead head jigs, small and large Food on Wilderness Island; Meals at Wilderness Island are all about bringing people together. We love our cooking and are lucky enough to be able to provide meals of the freshest seafood (often caught that day) or the freshest local produce. A coal fired BBQ, pizza oven and paella stand on the Island plus Jim’s culinary expertise after growing up on a station means you will always have a delicious, wholesome homecooked meal.
