Catholic Parish of Baulkham Hills Our Lady of Lourdes Church 1 Canyon Rd Baulkham Hills NSW 2153 Telephone 02 9639 8385 § olol@parishofbaulkhamhills.org.au § www.parishofbaulkhamhills.org.au Year C 21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 25th August 2019 Parish Information St Michael’s Church Someone said to Jesus: “Sir, will there be Chapel Lane only a few saved?” He said to them: “Try Baulkham Hills your best to enter by the narrow door, Saturday Vigil 5.30pm EST because many will try to enter and will not Sunday 8.00am, 10.00am, 6.00pm succeed.” Weekday Masses Luke 13, 22-30 Monday ~ Friday 9.15am Saturday 9.00am “When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled the lame.” Luke 14, 13 Our Lady of Lourdes Church I want to suggest that the metaphor of the narrow door used by Jesus in today’s 1 Canyon Rd, gospel reading is not about the reduced dimensions of a door but about the clutter Baulkham Hills we can gather to ourselves, our unused gifts that we refuse to share with those Saturday Vigil 6.00pm around us, and our slowness to expand the love in our hearts to include those we Sunday 9.30am don’t like and those who have offended us. It is these that are the obstacles that Korean 7.30pm Vigil/11.00am slow our progress on our life-long journey of growing into God. These are what will Weekday Masses hamper our entrance into adult faith and true personal integrity. Such clutter will Wednesday ~ Friday 9.30am provide us with a comfortable place in the crowd of all those who subscribe to the belief that there is safety in numbers and who measure success by the size of their Adoration of Blessed Eucharist bank account and the things they acquire. Friday 8.50am Prior to 9.30am Mass The narrow door and the narrow way are metaphors used by Jesus to describe the 1st Friday of Month manner in which he himself lived. He chose the way of compassion, simplicity and Mass of Blessing of the Sick unconditional love; a way that very few of us, who call ourselves his disciples, choose as our first preference. His way had nothing to do with narrow-mindedness, Reconciliation but much to do with true freedom, selflessness and inclusion of those pushed aside Saturday 5.30pm by those who found comfort in walking with the crowd. Baptism By Appointment Today’s gospel opens with a question that someone in the crowd put to Jesus. If 4th Saturday of the month 11.15am we’re honest, we will probably admit that we, too, have wrestled with similar questions about our final destiny. However, if we care to look at the various Our Lady of Lourdes Office questions that people put to Jesus in the course of his ministry, we will notice that he rarely gave a clear, definitive, unambiguous response. The answer we hear Mon/Tues 1.30pm ~ 4.30pm today is no different, and pushes us to answer for ourselves what is involved in Wed-Fri 9.30am ~ 4.30pm living like Jesus, in our contemporary world. Parish Priest Fr. Wim Hoekstra “Sir, will just a few people be saved?” is actually another way of asking whether there is safety in numbers. And Jesus seems to imply that sticking with the crowd Assistant Priests really means a reluctance to dare to be different or being afraid to support those Fr. Zvonimir Gavranovic whom the crowd shuns and ignores. Fr John Byung Chan Ji Deacon: Jesus eventually gave some kind of an answer to the question put to him at the Rev. Roque Dias start of today’s gospel when he referred to the expansiveness of God’s love: “And people will come from the east and the west and the north and the south, and will Korean Chaplain recline at table in the kingdom of God.” Instead of trying to list for our satisfaction Fr John Byung Chan Ji the “who’s who” or the “who will be who” in the kingdom of God, we might do better by committing ourselves to following the narrow way to the narrow door Parish Secretary modelled by Jesus. That, of course, means that entry to the kingdom of God is not Louise Ryall something that is earned by strategy or effort. Like life itself, it is pure gift.
